Why Clowns Will Never Die

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Clowns have been around since antiquity in one form or another, in cultures all over the world. Learn the history of the performers we know as clowns: the imp, the trickster, the fool, the jester, the harlequin, the clown, and the tramp. In the past few decades, the reputation of clowns has taken a beating, from the eerie picture of serial killer John Wayne Gacy in clown makeup to Stephen King’s Pennywise. But clown culture is thriving, too, in new incarnations such as hip-hop clowns, the new vaudeville movement, and the many classically-trained clowns looking for gigs. Read about all of these facets of clowndom at Collectors Weekly.

The Sport of Combat Juggling

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 02:00 AM PDT

In its simplest form, combat juggling involves two competitors. Each must juggle 3 pins without dropping any. They try to keep their pins in the air while knocking down the pins of their opponents.

To expand this challenge with teamwork and planned strategies, have 2 teams of jugglers try to take each other out. This is the grand spectacle of combat juggling at its finest. In the Grantland video embedded below, you can learn about this emerging sport that challenges both the mind and the body.

(Video Link)

Will it become popular? One competitor says that all the sport needs is a Ben Stiller movie:

Until the movie Dodgeball came out, not a lot of people know that there are actually dodgeball events. Everybody got interested in dodgeball. That's all you need is like that one little thing that gets people interested. There needs to be a juggling movie.

I've long said the same thing about book cart drilling.

44 Things You Didn’t Know About <i>The Walking Dead</i>

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Are you suffering from The Walking Dead withdrawal now that the season is over? Can’t bear the thought of waiting six months for more? Okay, we can’t give you any new plot points from the fifth season, but there’s plenty to learn about the series so far. The linked list may contain spoilers if you aren’t current on the series. Here's a sampling.

2. HBO execs passed on The Walking Dead because they thought it was too violent.

17. When they filmed the scene where they introduced Michonne, actress Danai Gurira hadn’t been cast yet, so that’s not her.

31. The walkers also don’t blink. In post-production, they try to edit all blinking out.

37. In the second episode when Michael Rooker, aka Merle, was shooting from on top of a roof, the actual SWAT team was called in because people thought he was a sniper.

There are a total of 44 trivia tidbits about The Walking Dead at Buzzfeed, including lots of pictures.

Wine Packaged in a Paint Bucket

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Yes, I’d like a gallon of merlot and an appropriate primer. Let’s try some single-malt scotch for that purpose.

The Lithuania-based ad agency McCann Vilnius created this novel and attention-grabbing package for Beaujolais Nouveau, a batch of new red wines produced annually by the Beaujolais region of France. The premise of the paint bucket design is that wine does more than intoxicate. It also, like paint, colors the lips and teeth of the consumer.

The back of the bucket contains instructions on how many glasses to drink in order to acquire the desired color. Be sure to sand with 150 grit paper between glasses for a glossy coat.

The Silly Walks Song

A new song from Monty Python? Really? Yes! “The Silly Walks Song” was written for the new show Monty Python Live (mostly) which premieres this summer. There are ten shows scheduled for July in London, with the July 20th show called the very last live show ever. Strangely, the lyrics to “The Silly Walks Song” are not about walking, but about money. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Tourist Shares Pics Of New York City In The Early 1980s

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Most tourists take a few pictures while they’re on vacation, but these pictures are generally not much to look at, focusing primarily on the tourists themselves rather than their surroundings.

But Paul Wright wasn’t your typical tourist, he was a young man from the UK visiting New York City in 1982 and 83 with lots of love for the city's seedy side in his heart and an eye for photography.

His pics capture the strange, the edgy, and downright bizarre side of NYC with wide eyed glee, and his tourist snapshots show a city which has changed quite a bit over the last thirty years.

The best part of Paul's images are the insightful comments he has included with each image, describing the story behind the photo in a delightful homage to a time when the chain stores and property developers had yet to take over NYC.

Twelve Of The Strangest Comic Book Crossovers Of All Time

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Comic book crossovers happen all the time, usually due to fan requests or some major event meant to bring the two universes together in a spectacular way, but the crossover comics on this list aren’t your usual fare. These weird crossovers go beyond 'what if', past 'what the…'  and straight to 'WTF?!'

When the Punisher shows up in Riverdale looking for a gangster who bears more than a passing resemblance to Archie things are getting strange, but when the Quik Rabbit battles the Weather Wizard and saves a frozen Superman by deciphering some Egyptian code you know these crossover comic events have truly jumped the shark!

Go forth, brave reader, and discover more strange comic book crossover events over at io9!

Spending Quality Time with the Goldfish

You should always take time out of your day to let your loved ones know how you feel. Playing with your pets is important, so they don’t feel rejected. Even if that pet is a goldfish in an outdoor pond or lake. And don’t just pet them and leave -make sure you pick them up and give them cuddle, too. -via Daily of the Day

Would You Like To See The Grossest Hockey Player Selfie Ever Taken?

I’m not going to show it to you here, but you can follow the link if you want. This is Mitch Callahan, the second-leading scorer for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He suffered a slapshot to the mouth last night and had to be taken out of the game against the Iowa Wild -and to the hospital. But before he left, he took a selfie and posted it to Twitter. We hear they collected about four teeth from the ice (he was already missing his front two). Look at your own peril.

Simon’s Cat in Crazy Time

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

One of the side effects of a cat’s lifestyle of sleeping 20 hours a day is that all the normal energy produced by expensive, nutritionally-balanced cat food builds up. In humans, this buildup is called “middle-age spread.” In cats, it reaches the bursting point eventually. That is most likely to happen at 3 AM, when humans are awakened by crashing, falling, and piano-playing sounds. In this animation from Simon Tofield, Simon’s Cat demonstrates such an event during the day so we can see it better. The episode plays itself out in frantic rushing from one place to another as the cat tries to figure out what it really wants to do. Having made no concrete decision, with the expelled energy dissipated, the cat then returns to normal equilibrium. -via Tastefully Offensive

Alien Erotica

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

The title of the article is Erotica Written By An Alien Pretending Not To Be Horrified By The Human Body. What scenario would lead to such an activity is left to the imagination. What if, say, an alien species came to live on Earth among us and one of them tried to make some money writing erotic fiction. They probably wouldn’t get the job, due to the complete misunderstanding of what “erotic” really means, and the alien’s disgust at human sex. Only selected lines are given, but they are both funny and not-for-children -not that they would understand them anyway. Here are a couple that are innocuous enough for sharing here:

“Together they put all of their clothes in a pile on the floor, where the dog lives.”

“With absolutely no regard for personal space, the two of them created an unnecessary amount of friction, generating sweat in the process.”

Has Motorization in the U.S. Peaked?

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 08:30 AM PDT

The graph above shows the rate of gasoline consumption in the U.S. There are more graphs in a new paper by Michael Sivak (.pdf) of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that show how the number of vehicles per person peaked in 2008, the number of miles driven peaked in 2006, and the per capita fuel consumption peaked in 2004. Part of that is explained by cars being more fuel-efficient, but other contributing factors are how people are keeping old cars longer, sharing cars, and driving less.

When I was in high school in the 1970s, my family had a half-dozen vehicles (mine had been purchased for $200), gas was around 40 cents, and “riding around” was an everyday pastime. Now my children are in high school, and we have two cars for three (soon to be four) drivers. I barely leave the house. Gas costs ten times as much, and you can no longer fix everything on a car yourself.

Now, if only we could turn the new lower demand into lower gas prices…

Poisson d'avril

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 07:30 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

The French comedy channel Poisson Rouge (which translates to red fish but means goldfish) made a video to illustrate what can happen when two friends try to one-up each other by pulling ever more serious April Fool pranks. Poisson d'avril means “April fish,” which refers to the French custom of sticking a paper fish to a friend’s back on April Fools Day. But one mystery remains unsolved: why is that guy wearing a Christmas sweater in April? -via Daily Picks and Flicks

How to Improve a Screwdriver Tip's Purchase: Laser-Etched Grooves

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

(Image: Wera)

When using a Phillips screwdriver, you may experience the tip slipping out. It can loose its grip on the screw, particularly when applying high torque. Here's a clever solution by the German toolmaker Wera. The designers used lasers to etch grooves into the tip in the direction that provides greater bite into the screw head. <i>My Little Pony</i> Hood Ornament

Hayden Sailer is a serious fan of Princess Luna from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. He rides around in style in a classic Oldsmobile decorated with a custom hood ornament that looks like the princess of the night. He made it with a 3D printer using a design that he found on Shapeways, then covered it with chrome paint.

This is one of many Luna crafts that Sailer has made, the most of impressive of which is this elegant light-up cane sword.

The Ultimate Tool For Camping Enthusiasts

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Camping is awesome, but even the biggest enthusiast will agree that sometimes getting away from it all can be a little dirty. That's where the Road Shower comes in. This solar-heated shower attaches to any standard roof rack and can heat water to temperatures over 100 degrees -adding a little room temperature water can cool it down to a comfortable level. While solar-powered camping showers are nothing new, having one that can be pressurized and that attaches to your car rack is something refreshingly new and drastically better than the alternatives. It can even be used hands free.
