"Koality" Selfies

Posted: 06 Apr 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Here's a quick quiz. Can you name at least one of the adorable arboreal herbivorous marsupials reaching instagram fame for their adorable selfies? If you said Bruce, Jay, or Aaron the Koala you are right!

Please don't feel sad that even the Koalas at the Wildlife Sydney Zoo are taking better selfies than you. In your defense you don't have a cool, motion activated, camera attached to a tree that is ready to capture your every move. You probably also lack super cute fluffy ears and a spoon shaped nose. Well, maybe you do have fluffy ears and a spoon shaped nose. If that's the case pull out that camera right now and start taking those koality, er ... quality selfies we are all going crazy for.

Patent Art for the Wienermobile

Posted: 06 Apr 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Since 1936, the Wienermobile has graced the roadways of the world, advertising Oscar Mayer's meat products and occasionally taking kids to the prom. The first design had a 13-foot hot dog and could be seen on the streets of Chicago.

Carl G. Mayer personally patented the modern version of the vehicle. You can view the official paperwork here.

Jurassic Park Without CGI

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 11:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Michael T. Mann was impressed with thee movie Jurassic Park, but wondered what it would be like if there were no computer-generated dinosaurs in it. So he re-edited several key scenes with more “conventional” special effects for the dinosaurs. That didn’t seem to be as good as the original, so he messed with the ending of the movie just a little to make up for it. The result is quite ridiculous, even downright stupid, but you will laugh at some point or another. Don’t miss the post-credit easter egg. -via The A.V. Club

You Have a Right to Remain Silent--Until Death Do You Part

You have a right to remain silent and probably should, regardless of guilt or innocence. That's often true when encountering both the police and your spouse. You also have the right to a phone call. Choose carefully whom you call.

Would You Sleep Inside This Blood and Guts Tent?

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 09:00 PM PDT

If Andrea Hasler (previously on Neatorama) invites you to go camping, beware! She may want to sleep inside this gruesome flesh and blood tent.

The art piece above, titled "Matriarch" and a smaller accompanying piece called "Next of Kin" are made from sculpted fiberglass covered with wax, leather and blood details that look like human intestines, tissues and skin.

Hasler, the Zurich, Switzerland-born and now London-based artist, was commissioned by New Greenham Arts to create a piece for Greenham Common in Berkshire, England. That site held the Women's Peace Camp, which was made famous when 30,000 women joined hands around the perimeter of an American airbase to protest nuclear weapons being held there. Hasler explained that "Metaphorically, I am taking the notion of the tents which were on site during the Women's Peace Camp, as the container for emotions, and 'humanise' these elements to create emotional surfaces."

The larger of the two tents, according to Hasler, is a full-sized replica, whereas the other is scaled down and represents a mother and child relationship. "It's almost like I am taking the fabric of the tent, the sort of the nylon element of the tent, and I make the fabric, this skin layer as sort of the container for emotion, or sort of the container to hold emotion, as in the skin holding emotion."

Hasler's art exhibition Embrace the Base is on view at the Corn Exchange Newbury & New Greenham Arts through April 11, 2014.

Three-year-old Dancer

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Zhang Junhao is three years old. He is probably the youngest contestant you’ve ever seen in a TV talent show. On the show Awesome Chinese, he comes out on stage with his own sound system that’s as big as he is, and gives the remote control to a judge. The judge messes with him by constantly changing the song played, but this little trouper is not rattled in the least! His dancing is pretty good, for a 3-year-old, but his real talent is his stage presence. Be sure to stay for his Q&A after the performance, when he grabs your heart right there at your computer desk. -via Time Newsfeed

Bacon and Sausage Encased Whole Hot Dog & Bun

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

How do you like your hot dog? Just mustard, relish and sauerkraut isn't enough. Mirko of the German-language food blog Fat and Tasty built this delicious meal (translation) that almost looks too..., uh, good to eat. He began with a hot dog in a bun, which he then wrapped with sausage. Then he encased it a lattice of bacon, tomato paste, and Gouda cheese. Then Mirko popped it into the oven to produce this almost indescribable dish.

The Communist Fantasy of Living on the Moon

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

The Space Race of the 1950s and ‘60s was just as exciting for the Soviet Union as it was for Americans, and both nations encouraged that excitement in children to build their interest in science and technology for the future. io9 has a roundup of illustrations from Soviet magazine, comic books, and children’s books about future colonists living on the moon and even further out to the planets. The pictures have many elements in common, like the domed structures and the proud outstretched hand showing off the progress, but the styles are varied and beautiful. You have to wonder about the helicopters, though.

The illustration shown here is by Andrei Sokolov. Typical of the time, those visions of a future in space had absolutely too much wasted space. As any real astronaut or cosmonaut will tell you, they don't give you an inch more than absolutely necessary. -via Metafilter

Things Disney Characters Do That Would Be Creepy if You Did Them

"Practically speaking," I asked my wife, "Couldn't Belle have just knifed the Beast at some point early in her captivity? It seems like she wasn't really looking for opportunities to escape."

She replied, "Disney princesses don't do things like that."

Well, that is true. As a type, they aren't sufficiently cold blooded. But I don't think like a Disney princess and we don't live inside a Disney movie. If we did, the man in this funny BuzzFeed video would seem normal.

Which Classic Movies Have You Seen?

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Buzzfeed presents us with a list of 200 movies, and you are asked to go through and check all that you’ve seen. They’ll total it up for you. Of course, there is much arguing over classic movies that were not included in the list, and some that maybe shouldn’t be regarded as classic just yet. My total was 107, but I do not have an extensive DVD collection, nor is there a revival house theater anywhere near me. I am just older than dirt. Most of the movies I checked were seen in a theater. How many of them have you seen?

Old People Dancing to Pharrell's "Happy" Should Make YOU Happy

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

YouTube Clip - via Hello Giggles

I dare you to watch this video and not smile.

YouTuber Picsel and Zootropio collaborated to bring us another (in a long line*) video clip of people dancing to Pharrell William's insanely happy** song "Happy." This time, however, instead of young people dancin', we get something better: old people dancin'.

I can't help but smile seeing (such well dressed) grandmas and grandpas dancing. They truly look happy!

*Note 1: Allowing people to remix your video clip to make it viral is an incredibly smart strategy. I don't understand the music and movie industries' insistence that their woes are due to piracy. Their main enemy is not piracy, it's obscurity.

**Note 2: I don't know which is insanely happier, Pharrell's Happy or Darwin Deez' Radar Detector.

Kaleidoscope Faces

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

I’m not sure if people are already gearing up for 4/20, or if the internet discovered a vial of virtual acid it had forgotten about, but there have been all kinds of trippy things floating around the interwebs lately.

Case in point- this series of image manipulations by Norg Nodis featuring faces neatly sliced into sections then re-assembled kaleidoscope style.

Even without the aid of herbal enhancements or psychedelics your mind will go “whoa” as you stare at the neatly shaped facial features that radiate out from the core of each subject’s being, or some such New Age type jargon.

Finally, a video that combines the two biggest obsessions on the internet -cats and video games! See what happens when a handsome black cat finds himself in a Super Mario World. This video from Michael Tivikoff shows how a cat collects coins, deals with Koopas and mushrooms, and achieves a power-up! He even finds time to stop and smell the fire flowers. -Thanks, Michael!

Batman Is A Cold Blooded Murderer

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Holy homicides Batman, you’re a murdering psychopath masquerading as a crime fighting superhero, and this Cracked article entitled The 6 Most Brutal Murders Committed By Batman proves it!

Batman is obviously a big picture kinda guy, and he considers henchman to be expendable because no matter how many low ranking baddies he kills they never seem to tarnish his reputation.

You’d think Robin would have called him out on at least a few of these killings, but Robin probably turns a blind eye to it all because he’s afraid of becoming Bat Boy’s next victim!

Elk Crossing

A large hard of delicious venison elk cross the road in Bozeman, Montana. But wait! One little guy is having trouble getting over the fence! Of course, with a family this big, there’s going to be at least one who’s relatively incompetent. Will he make it? Will he become stuck, or find an opening in the fence? Will he ever catch up with the herd? There’s a lot of suspense in this short video. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

The Surreal Mind of Igor Morski

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Polish artist Igor Morski says that, “My surrealism has appeared a little bit by accident.” It developed gradually over time and some people have difficulty understanding what he’s expressing. That is, in part, because Morski composes art from a particularly Polish perspective. In an interview, he explained that Poles understand brutality:

Another thing is that we Poles have quite specific sense of sensitivity. Wars and many other horrors that have flooded our country have made it acceptable for us a kind of narrative, difficult to accept elsewhere. I realized this when I once took a couple of excellent Polish posters to the Netherlands. For people who viewed them, they were scary. The artist placed, for example, as an allegory, a labyrinth of stairs in the human head, in Poland, people focused on the hidden meaning, the Dutch were drawing attention to the fact of head “mutilation”. They were interpreting this very literally.

When strange visions of other worlds come to Morski, they command his attention:

Work which I need to carry out, is somehow forcing me to a fast reaction. Typically, it lasts 24hours from the moment I get the text to the moment I have to present my work. It’s crazy pace, but the very good trade school. Most of my work was done in a maximum of 8 hours.

Who Will Replace Letterman?

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Late Show host David Letterman has announced that he will retire in 2015, after 33 years of hosting his late night talk show on two different networks. No other late night host has had such a long run. And even though he has a year to go, the wagons are circling to decide who will replace him.

People who are in the loop say that CBS thinks Stephen Colbert would make a good replacement, and Colbert is open to the idea, although there have been no formal offers made. Other top choices include Ellen DeGeneres and Tina Fey. Craig Ferguson, whose show airs right after Letterman, would seem to be the obvious choice, but CBS doesn’t feel his style is right for the earlier time slot.

Other possible candidates are Neil Patrick Harris, Chelsea Handler, Conan O’Brien, John Stewart, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Jon Oliver, and Louis CK. Who would you like to see CBS hiring for the 11:30 talk show?

POLL: Who should replace David Letterman?

 • Stephen Colbert
 • Craig Ferguson
 • Ellen DeGeneres
 • Tina Fey
 • Neil Patrick Harris
 • Chelsea Handler
 • Conan O’Brien

Music Video Featuring Ridiculous Ideas For Video Games

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Tokyo Police Club is not the name of a video game, although it certainly sounds like a groundbreaking gameplay experience, Tokyo Police Club is the name of an indie band who love video games.

Tokyo Police Club made a video for their song Hot Tonight, and it features all kinds of imaginary video games someone should actually make such as Tour Canada, Manic Mayor, the Street Fighter clone Twitter Beef and Stage Rush, the sound gear stacking game.

Okay, maybe Tokyo Police Club just needed a good excuse to include video games in their music video…

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

This past week has been full of excitement over the opening of Major League Baseball, but March Madness continues in April. I am surprised but proud and pleased that the UK Wildcats are in the Final Four, despite being seeded #8 in the tournament. They play Wisconsin late tonight, after Florida vs. Connecticut. The past week at Neatorama has been full of baseball, April Fools, The Walking Dead withdrawal, and Game of Thrones excitement -the new season begins tomorrow night. While you’re waiting, you’ll want to catch up on all the important stuff from the week at Neatorama.

We had two exhibitions of fan art. John Farrier brought us 12 Great Pieces of World Conquest Zvezda Plot Fan Art.

And Jill Harness found 21 Cool Pieces of Quentin Tarantino Fan Art.

Eddie Deezen told us about Babe Ruth's Lovelife.

We had two excerpts from brand new books! The first was Pranklopedia: The Funniest, Grossest, Craziest, Not-mean Pranks on the Planet.

The other was How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity.

Over on our Spotlight blog, we brought you 10 Rarest Rock and Roll Photographs.

And a big look at a World Map Made of Coins.

Funny You Should Ask, a scientific study on whether people will have sex with strangers, was from The Annals of Improbable Research.

And 4 Gertrudes Who Changed the World took a look at some fascinating women in history, courtesy of mental_floss magazine.

We took a poll to see Who Will Die in the Season Finale of The Walking Dead? in your opinion. Without giving anything away, I can say that we were altogether even more wrong than in last years poll!

A more recent poll came in the post How Many People Would It Take to Colonize Another Star System? That isn't the poll question; the question is whether you would be willing to try it.

Hy Conrad's Whodunit this week was The Dying Clue. Did you figure it out?

In this week’s What Is It? game, the mystery item is a chain breaker, or chain detacher. There’s more about it at the What Is It? blog. Meanwhile, we had a lot of wrong but funny answers here in the game! Andrew Dalke had a clever answer (a reader favorite with 5 ♥s), “It's for grooming the sheep that make steel wool.” That’s a winning answer, but unfortunately, he did not select a t-shirt. StilesJM 1 also had a good answer, it’s “Salvador Dali's salad fork.” That’s certainly worth a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Thanks to everyone who played this week, and thanks to the What Is It? blog!

We have a new contest called Tell Us What to Write About & Win A $50 Shopping Spree At the NeatoShop. It's taking place on Pinterest, and is open for entries until April 11th. You can get all the details in the post. We can't wait to see your ideas!

The post with the most comments this week was Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s? unless you count the giveaway.

The comment of the week was this exchange under the picture of the kids listening to a bagpiper.

The most popular post this week was For Sale: A Creepy Gigantic Model of David Hasselhoff by far, followed by Stunning 3D Tattoos Appear to Leap off the Skin and When an Elephant Falls on You.

The post that received the most hearts was Street Typography, with Student Accepted at All 8 Ivy League Schools coming in second. The most-emailed post was Make Your Own Beautiful Fire Pit Swing Set.

Over at the NeatoShop, I hear Alex is busy signing up new indie artists by the truckload to bring you the finest and most unique t-shirt designs on the planet.

We invite you to follow the Neatoramanauts Facebook page for extra content you won't see here, plus you'll want to follow Neatorama on Twitter and Pinterest, too!

Thanks for visiting us at Neatorama! Have a great week, everyone!

Harley Quinn Sings "Do You Want to Kill the Batman?" in Frozen Parody

Posted: 05 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

In the movie Frozen, Elsa isolates herself from Anna, fearing that she may accidentally kill her little sister. Anna doesn't understand why her loving sister has withdrawn from her life. She invites Elsa to play with her in the song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?," which is embedded below. It's a hard, tragic scene in the movie.

Similarly heartbreaking is the breakup of the Joker and Harley Quinn from the DC Comics universe. They were a romantic couple, but the Joker couldn't climb out of his own depression enough to keep the relationship going. Harley did her best to encourage him, inviting him to come out of his lair to kill the Batman. YouTube user SydneyAmber sang this pitch-perfect parody of the Frozen song.
