Will there be a role for developers in this area? And if so, how can developers position themselves in the months ahead on this nascent but potentially explosive opportunity? Register Today! | | Editor's Corner Today we are kicking off a weekly mobile app roundup to keep you up to date on the hottest mobile apps for the enterprise, as well as consumers. Mobile apps are the way most mobile device users get value out of their devices. A full 86 percent of time spent on mobile devices is on mobile apps, or 2 hours and 19 minutes per day out of a total of 2 hours and 42 minutes per day, according to the latest stats from Flurry. That compares with only 14 percent of the time spent on the mobile web, or a mere 22 minutes per day. While the survey focused on consumers, mobile apps are also becoming the dominant way employees use their mobile devices in the office. According to stats from enterprise mobility firm Good Technology, there was a 54 percent jump in enterprise mobile app activations in the fourth quarter of 2013. Many of these were custom-built apps focused on business intelligence, secure browsing and social media. In our inaugural roundup, associate editor Robert Bartley takes you on a tour de force of five new mobile apps. From Glip comes an app that provides a messaging channel for your whole team, while Accompli provides an email-integrated app that enables users to make changes across all iOS platforms while still in the app. From Snupps comes an app that enables you to digitize your possessions and organize them virtually. Do you suffer from jet lag during your business travels? Well, wake up and smell the coffee. Entrain has developed an app that creates a plan to help your body adjust to a new time zone. Once you have recovered from your jet lag, you can turn to an updated version of Google's Field Trip app that enables you to use your recently acquired Google Glass to find the historical sites and hot spots in your new location. Every Wednesday you will get a sneak peak at latest and greatest mobile apps so you can show your colleagues around the water cooler the cool things you can do with your mobile device. - Fred Read more about: jet lag | | This week's sponsor is CPL. | | FastCast Webinar: Reduce Datacenter Energy Costs by up to 15%: Software Meets Datacenter ROI Friday, May 15th, 2pm ET/ 11am PT Join us for a look at two Intel Datacenter Software solutions, sample use cases, and implementation overviews. Register Today! | | | Today's Top Stories Frequent mobile phone users are at a higher risk of developing certain types of brain cancer, according to a multi-year study by French scientists published in the British journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Based on a study carried from 2004 to 2006 in four areas of France, the group of 11 scientists concluded that there was a "positive association" between heavy mobile phone use and glioma and meningioma brain tumors. Heavy use was defined as using the mobile phone for more than 15 hours per month over a five-year period. People who were frequent users had between two and three times greater risk of developing these cancers compared with people who rarely used their phones, according to a report about the study in The Guardian newspaper. Surprisingly, the study found that the cancer occurred on the opposite side of the brain from where the cell phone was normally used. "It is difficult to define a level of risk, if any, especially as mobile phone technology is constantly evolving," the newspaper quotes the study as saying. The study revives a long-running debate about whether cellphone use increases the risk of brain cancer--a debate that dates from the early days of cellphone use. More recently, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, also known as IARC, said in 2011 that radiofrequency fields used by cellphones might be linked to glioma (.pdf). "Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings it is important that additional research be conducted into the long term, heavy use of mobile phones. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands?free devices or texting," observes IARC Director Christopher Wild. However, an international study called Interphone published in 2010 found no increased risk for glioma and meningioma from heavy cellphone use, according to the National Cancer Institute. The study examined 5,000 brain tumor patients and health controls in 13 countries. Register Today! | Glip opens a versatile messaging channel for your whole team, allowing a seamless relationship between communication and workflow. Think Skype with file sharing and calendar and email integration. According to the developers, fluid conversation and extemporaneous ideas, things lost in the stop-and-go nature of an email and phone tag work culture, are made possible with the real-time, ongoing conversations the app provides. Messages can be shared across multiple platforms, including Web browsers, desktops and iOS and Android devices. Another email-integrated app that promises much more, Acompli, looks to make your busy life manageable. An umbrella approach to contacts, calendar and email allows users to remain in the app to make changes across all iOS platforms. One feature that sets it apart from other email apps is in-app access to recently emailed documents, a must for mobile professionals. The program also supports swipe functions, so pesky spam or dead conversations will be gone with a flick. Everything you lose is always in the last place you look. With Snupps, you'll already know where that last place is. This app lets you digitize your real world possessions and organize them virtually. It's like a personal inventory for your smartphone, tablet or computer. The developers have included a collection function, which lets you separate your things into groups and all of your lists are private unless you choose to share them. Circadian clocks? Lighting history? If you don't know what they are, Entrain does. Much scientific research has gone into the study of sleep patterns and how they are disrupted by traveling long distance. The developers of this app have harnessed that information to help users beat the dreaded jet lag phenomenon. The simple app records your location and arrival time and creates a plan to help your body adjust to a new time zone. Entrain includes features like scheduling, graphs to present your sleep efficiency and the recommended sleep schedule for any time zone. And once you beat jet lag, use Google's Field Trip app to take in your new locale. While it has been around since last summer, the development team adds new features often--the most recent was voice commands for Google Glass in the beginning of May--and is working to include more functions with wearable devices. The app will determine your location and present facts and reviews on virtual cards for popular destinations, hangouts and historical spots. It's the perfect app for traveling in a new city. Read more about: snupps, Field Trip back to top Paying a fee to download a mobile game is "slowly disappearing," says Blake Jorgensen, chief financial officer at gaming firm Electronic Arts. "The consumer expects to get the game experience on a mobile device for free," Jorgensen is quoted by GameSpot as saying at the Wedbush 2014 Transformational Technologies Management Access Conference in New York. According to Gartner, free apps account for around 60 percent of Apple's App Store downloads, while they account for 80 percent of Google Play downloads. Instead of charging for downloads, mobile app developers are increasingly turning to in-app purchasing, or IAP, to generate revenue. "We believe that IAP is a promising and sustainable monetization method because it encourages performance-based purchasing; that is, users only pay when they are happy with the experience, and developers have to work hard to earn the revenue through good design and performance," says Brian Blau, research director at Gartner. EA's Jorgensen agrees. Consumers "know they can grow that experience over time by monetizing or paying for more, or continuing to play for free," he says. The firm has seen its mobile gaming business explode, reaching more than 130 million monthly active users and generating a record $460 million in revenue in its most recent fiscal year. EA mobile games for iOS and Android devices include Monopoly, The Sims, Madden NFL, FIFA by EA Sports and the Simpsons. "We feel that the install base is a very important number for us because you're essentially creating a network and a group of users that you can keep moving to other games over time. It reduces your cost of acquisition so to speak," Jorgensen concludes. Al Franken (D-Minn.) has sent a letter to Samsung expressing concern about the security of Galaxy S5's fingerprint scanner after researchers in Germany were able to hack into the phone using a rubber mold made from latent fingerprints on the screen, according to a report by Re/code. The iPhone 5s suffered a similar hack, but Franken complains that Samsung allows for unlimited attempts to access the device without requiring a password and the use of the fingerprint scanner to access apps, which increases the security risks from the vulnerability. ABI identified six kinds of enterprise wearable devices: smartglasses, cameras, smartwatches, healthcare devices, sports and activity trackers, and 3D motion trackers. "Wearable technology such as smartglasses and those used for healthcare are better suited for the enterprise as corporate-liable devices. Smartwatches, on the other hand, will most likely follow the trend of BYOD into the enterprise," observes ABI senior enterprise analyst Jason McNicols. Read more.
