From Sprint/T-Mobile to the iWatch: The wireless rumors most likely to become reality The wireless industry is often awash in rumors. Today, those rumors range from a possible merger between Sprint and T-Mobile to a possible iWatch from Apple. But, with all the noise in the industry, it's often difficult to track the source and evolution of these rumors. More importantly, it's also difficult to evaluate the likelihood of these rumors becoming reality. Thus, FierceWireless has taken a look back at the recent spate of rumors to assess the evidence and determine how likely it is that the rumor will turn into a reality. T-Mobile launches VoLTE in Seattle, promises more markets this year T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) said it has launched Voice over LTE in the Seattle area for customers using three devices, the LG Electronics G Flex and Samsung Electronics Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Light. The announcement comes just ahead of AT&T Mobility's (NYSE: T) own VoLTE launch, scheduled for Friday in a handful of markets on one phone. In a company blog post, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray wrote that customers using VoLTE will see call setups almost twice as fast as a non-VoLTE call setup. He also wrote that HD Voice service is also included with VoLTE, but noted that T-Mobile has been offering nationwide W-AMR-powered HD Voice on its HSPA network since January 2013. As with other VoLTE deployments, voice traffic will go over IP instead of the circuit-switched voice network. T-Mobile is also using Enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (eSRVCC), a new LTE Advanced function that Ray said T-Mobile will be the first to deploy in the U.S. Ray wrote that this is designed to ensure customers won't drop a call if they leave an LTE area and the call switches to HSPA+ or 2G coverage. T-Mobile's LTE network currently covers 210 million POPs, and the company has previously said it plans to increase that to 230 million by mid-year and 250 million by the end of 2014. Ray wrote that T-Mobile plans to roll out VoLTE "to more T-Mobile customers throughout the coming year" but did not provide a timeframe for doing so. A T-Mobile spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the topic. Ray also wrote that launching VoLTE is T-Mobile's "first step toward a host of rich communication services and additional innovations around Wi-Fi calling that we're looking to deliver to our customers over the coming months." He added that T-Mobile's engineering team "is working tirelessly" to launch VoLTE in additional cities and with more devices. Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) reiterated this week that it plans to launch VoLTE sometime this year, and said that when it launches the service the carrier will offer a "robust line" of VoLTE-capable smartphones and video calling services. Verizon has not set a specific timeframe for the launch but has said the service will be available nationwide--meaning, Verizon does not plan to roll out the service on a market-by-market basis. HD Voice and video calling are going to be the two main services initially offered through VoLTE technology, and will be accessible through a phone's native dialer. AT&T last week announced it would launch VoLTE services this Friday via the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini in select areas in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The carrier said it will expand to additional markets and phones in the future. AT&T said the technology would power HD Voice functions but made no mention of video calling. Sprint (NYSE: S), for its part, has said it is in no rush to launch VoLTE. The company will rely on its CDMA network and EVRC-NW-powered HD Voice technology for voice calling services for the foreseeable future, Sprint Chief Network Officer John Saw told FierceWireless in March. Saw said Sprint is investing in VoLTE technology, but doesn't have a timeline for deploying the service. Sprint has said its HD Voice calling service will be available nationwide by the middle of this year. AT&T's Cricket offers handset financing on prepaid phones, including tax-free loans and leases Cricket, the new prepaid brand of AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T), is now offering a wide range of financing options to customers who want to purchase expensive phones. The financing options include a tax-free plan, a 29.99 percent APR plan with 6 months deferred interest, and a 12-month leasing plan. The carrier initially made the announcement on its Facebook page. Cricket spokeswoman Nneoma Njoku confirmed the plans to FierceWireless. She said they have been available since Sunday. Here are the details of the plans, which are available to customers depending on their credit scores: Tier I Installment loan: - 0 percent APR for 24 months (minimum monthly payment of 4.16 percent of initial balance)
- Available for devices $149.98 and higher (accessories not eligible)
Tier II Installment loan: - 29.99 percent APR with 6 months deferred interest and 24-month term (minimum monthly payment of 5.4 percent of initial balance)
- Available for devices $149.98 and higher (accessories not eligible)
Lease to own: - 12-month lease term. At end of term, customer owns device.
- 90-day same-as-cash payoff option
- Available for devices $149.98 and higher (accessories not eligible)
AT&T closed on its acquisition of Cricket provider Leap Wireless earlier this year, and on Sunday the carrier debuted its newly refreshed Cricket branding and pricing plans. Cricket joins a large and growing number of carriers that are offering financing options on smartphones. T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) kicked off the trend last year by uncoupling the cost of phones and the cost of its services. In place of the traditional handset subsidy with a two-year service contract, T-Mobile now allows customers to pay for the cost of their phones via tax-free monthly installments. In response to T-Mobile, Sprint (NYSE: S), AT&T and Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) all subsequently launched similar programs. And, according to new data, consumers appear to be extremely supportive of the new financing options: Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that fully 25 percent of all smartphones sold in the first quarter are being paid for through handset financing plans, a figure that it up from just over 15 percent in the fourth quarter. And Ben Schachter at Macquarie Research recently predicted that fully 43 percent of all smartphones sold by the end of this year will be paid for through handset financing plans and not through traditional wireless carrier subsidies. Although handset financing represents a significant change to the way wireless carriers sell smartphones, carrier executives have widely said that the change from subsidies to financing won't dramatically affect their bottom line. Essentially, handset financing programs like AT&T's Next and Verizon's Edge move the cost of the phone from a carrier's service revenues to its equipment revenues--an accounting change but not a material one. Indeed, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo noted during the carrier's first quarter earnings conference call that the carrier's Edge program "had a favorable effect on profitability," according to a Seeking Alpha transcript of the event. Interestingly, AT&T's Cricket could be the first major prepaid carrier to offer a handset financing plan. Sprint's Virgin Mobile, as well as Leap Wireless and MetroPCS before they were acquired, tested handset financing programs last year. In addition, AT&T prepaid MVNO Consumer Cellular announce its EasyPay financing program last year. However, no major prepaid carrier has strongly pushed a financing program as of yet. Sprint, nTelos strike new LTE network alliance through 2022 Sprint (NYSE: S) and its wholesale partner nTelos Wireless changed and expanded their wholesale agreement to give each other access to their respective LTE networks through 2022. The deal is the first significant one Sprint has made with a smaller carrier since it announced partnerships in March with the Competitive Carriers Association and the NetAmerica Alliance to expand LTE roaming deals. Under the revised terms Sprint and nTelos agreed to, nTelos will continue to be the exclusive network provider for Sprint services in its western Virginia and West Virginia service area, which covers around 2.1 million POPs. Sprint customers will have access to nTelos's recently launched LTE network and nTelos will have access to Sprint's 800 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum throughout the territory. Additionally, nTelos retail customers will also have access to Sprint's nationwide LTE network outside the nTelos network footprint. NTelos is the nation's seventh largest wireless carrier, counting roughly 468,000 customers. But the carrier said the teaming with Sprint will help both nTelos and Sprint compete more effectively. "I think we can all agree that competition is good for our industry, and I don't think we'll have competition if we don't close the network gap with the big two," nTelos CEO James Hyde said on a conference call with investors. As part of the deal, nTelos also said it plans to expand and build its LTE network in the western Virginia and West Virginia territory to specifications that are aligned with Sprint's Network Vision network modernization program. Further, nTelos also agreed to make "future feature upgrades," presumably for LTE Advanced services and beyond. As part of that upgrade, nTelos agreed to substantially complete the network enhancements no later than May 2017 and estimated that the upgrades will cost between $150 million and $175 million. The buildout is expected to be fully funded from existing cash balances and cash generated from operations, nTelos said. However, nTelos said it will not pay its planned dividend to shareholders and will instead use those funds to build out its LTE network. Interestingly, Sprint agreed to work with its vendors to provide nTelos with more favorable pricing for devices and network equipment. Hyde said that the deal sets the stage for further cooperation with Sprint beyond the new agreement. Hyde also said the deal will not affect nTelos' trial of fixed wireless technology with Dish Network Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH). Dish and nTelos are close to launching a trial network for fixed wireless TD-LTE service. The companies hope to add commercial users to the network in July. The nTelos service area includes the markets of Charlottesville, Danville, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke and Staunton-Waynesboro, Virginia; Beckley, Bluefield, Charleston, Clarksburg/Elkins, Fairmont, Huntington and Morgantown, West Virginia; and Ashland, Kentucky. NTelos first launched LTE in the fourth quarter of 2013 and the company plans to launch LTE services in more markets during May and June, and by the end of June expects to cover around 2.5 million POPs with LTE, which is nearly 60 percent of its year-end goal of 4.2 million POPs. Hyde said the company's current LTE network can be transitioned under the new agreement and does not need to be ripped out. As a result of the agreement, nTelos now expects to report a lower adjusted EBITDA for 2014 of between $128 million and $135 million (compared to a previous estimate of $140 million to $150 million). Additionally, nTelos said it expects its 2014 capital expenditures to be higher, between $110 million and $120 million (compared to a previous range of $85 million to $95 million). The deal with nTelos builds on what Sprint announced in late March, which Sprint hopes will encourage rural wireless carriers to build LTE networks that Sprint's customers will be able to roam onto. Under Sprint's new partnership with the CCA, Sprint will use CCA's data hub to allow CCA members to ink reciprocal roaming agreements with Sprint. Sprint and U.S. Cellular (NYSE:USM) have already conducted successful roaming tests with CCA's data roaming hub. Sprint also said it will add 700 MHz Band 12 capabilities to some of its devices starting next year--spectrum that the carrier itself doesn't own but that many smaller rural carriers do and use for LTE. Sprint's plans are similar to Verizon Wireless' (NYSE: VZ) LTE Rural America program, which the carrier established in 2010 in order to accelerate its LTE network buildout in rural areas. Under Verizon's program, rural carriers can lease Verizon's 700 MHz spectrum and use it to build out an LTE network. At least 20 operators have signed on to Verizon's LTE Rural America program. Report: T-Mobile overtakes Sprint in Q1 as No. 3 U.S. smartphone carrier T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS), along with its MetroPCS prepaid brand, surpassed Sprint (NYSE: S) and Sprint's MVNOs as the third-largest U.S. carrier in terms of smartphone volumes in the first quarter, according to a new research report. According to Counterpoint's Market Monitor, T-Mobile is now closely behind AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) in terms of smartphones. Counterpoint's Neil Shah, a former analyst with Strategy Analytics, wrote in a post that T-Mobile's "uncarrier" strategy "is surely working for the carrier, attracting a wave of new smartphone subscribers." In the first quarter T-Mobile launched a program to pay off the Early Termination Fees of customers who switch to T-Mobile and traded in their phones, which could have boosted the carrier's numbers. Sprint said it had retail smartphone sales of just under 5 million in the first quarter, while T-Mobile said it sold a record 6.9 million smartphones in the quarter. The report noted that three-quarters of smartphones shipped during the first quarter were LTE smartphones. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Samsung Electronics combined captured more than 70 percent of the LTE shipments. Other stats from the report were less surprising. Apple and Samsung were the two largest U.S. smartphone vendors in the quarter, according to the report. Together they captured more than two-thirds of the smartphone market in the period. Apple captured around half of the smartphone sales at Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T in the first quarter, the report said, and 36 percent at Sprint. Samsung was the largest smartphone provider at T-Mobile, with 38 percent (Apple had 24 percent at T-Mobile). Overall, TCL-Alcatel became the fourth largest handset supplier and fifth-largest smartphone supplier in U.S. in the quarter, mainly by taking share away from Huawei, the report said. Sprint MVNO FreedomPop launches $20 LTE plan, adds Samsung phones to lineup Sprint (NYSE: S) MVNO FreedomPop launched a new $20 per month plan with unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of LTE data before throttling. The company also released its free, over-the-top Free Voice and Text communications app on Android. | | FreedomPop will sell the Samsung Galaxy S4 for $349. | The $20 no-contract "Unlimited Everything" plan offers unlimited voice, texting and data, and free tethering will also be included on all new LTE phones with the service. After 1 GB of data has been used for the month, LTE speeds will be throttled down to 3G speeds. FreedomPop's OTT app allows and Android users to use FreedomPop's free voice and text services, and gives users a new phone number. The company also said it is the first OTT app that will also allow users to port an existing number. The app requires customers to have some kind of data connection, either through Wi-Fi or cellular. The company also added three new Samsung Electronics phones to its device lineup. The Galaxy Victory will cost $119 unsubsidized, the Galaxy S III costs $189 and the Galaxy S4 costs $349. All of FreedomPop's phone customers already get 500 MB of data, 200 voice calls and 500 texts free each month. FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols recently told FierceWireless that the company wants to have a second U.S. carrier partner for "strategic reasons," mainly to partner with an operator that has traditionally used SIM cards. That would "open up a whole new avenue for us," Stokols said. He said FreedomPop wants to pair SIM-based devices with its OTT app. Stokols also said that by mid-year FreedomPop will start offering smartphones that work with Sprint's tri-band LTE Spark service. The goal is to get all of FreedomPop's Android phones off WiMAX and onto LTE. Other Sprint MVNOs, such as Ting, already offer Spark-capable devices. AT&T's Marian Croak: SDN and NFV will change network suppliers in 'fundamental ways' AT&T Mobility's (NYSE: T) "User-Defined Network Cloud" initiative, which makes use of Software-Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, is aimed at transforming the carrier's network. AT&T wants to virtualize hardware functions, cut costs and put more control of its network in the cloud and in the hands of users, both in the consumer and enterprise markets. But what will that effort mean for the company's network equipment suppliers? "It really is very disruptive technology in terms of the supply chain. They have to change in very fundamental ways," explained Marian Croak, senior vice president of AT&T's Domain 2.0 architecture and advanced services development. "The way that we used to work with the supplier community was that they would build specialized, proprietary hardware that was tightly coupled with software. They have to break that apart now and run software on commodity hardware, which we call white boxes, which are a lot less expensive than what we used to have. And then they have to virtualize their software."
