Call for an "Added Sugar" Label

How can we make smart decisions for our health when the food industry is working hard to mask the truth behind how much sugar is actually in our food? Urge the FDA to make the "added sugar" label a reality.

ACTION ALERT
Don't Let the Food Industry Sugar-Coat Science

Dear UCS supporter,

From diabetes to heart disease, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in diet-related chronic illnesses throughout the country, much of it due to eating too much sugar. But how can we make smart decisions for our health when companies are working hard to mask the truth behind how much sugar, and how much "added sugar," is actually in our food and drink?

Now is the time to tell the FDA that you support expanding the Nutritional Facts label to include information about added sugar.

In 2012 alone, major food corporations such as General Mills and PepsiCo funneled nearly $7 billion dollars into advertising and marketing campaigns that mislead the public about the healthiness of their food and beverages. Many of these products contain a lot of added sugar—excessive sugar that is added solely to sweeten the flavor. But how would you and I know that? The current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) "Nutrition Facts" label does not tell us how much added sugar is in the products we consume.

It's been 20 years since the last update to the Nutrition Facts label. Scientists, nutritionists, health professionals, and consumer groups all agree that Americans should eat fewer added sugars and that labeling it on packaging will encourage more informed, healthier eating. But the food industry is fighting back to stop this common-sense measure that could protect our health.

We can't let food corporations' deceptive marketing tactics hide the truth about the sugar in our food products.

Urge the FDA to make the "added sugar" label a reality.

Take Action

Sincerely,
Danielle Fox
