C-Clamp Legs Turn Any Flat Object into a Table

Posted: 04 May 2014 04:00 AM PDT

I've learned that in carpentry--well, in most things in life--you can never have too many clamps. Large c-clamps are useful in both the home and the workshop. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Yael Zwickel, an industrial designer in Kfar Netter, Israel, developed a set specifically for creating impromptu tables. Get a few of them and wrap them around a book, a board, a picture, or even a frying pan, and you'll have a table.

Should We Destroy the Last Smallpox Virus?

Posted: 04 May 2014 02:00 AM PDT

An estimated 300 million people died from the smallpox virus in the 20th century. Then a was developed, and the World Health Organization declared the disease eradicated in 1979. Since then, the only live variola samples, the virus that causes smallpox, are isolated in laboratories at the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, and in Russia. It’s been 45 years. Should we destroy those samples and sent the virus to extinction? Some say yes, to safeguard the world from the possibility of containment failure or a terrorist using the disease as a weapon. Others say it’s worth keeping for the research potential and vaccine testing.

But do we really need all of these vaccines for a disease that’s no longer around in humans? The last natural case was diagnosed in 1977, and today, the risk of a smallpox outbreak emerging is minuscule. However, scientists don’t know exactly how long variola virus can survive in dead tissue.

Researchers have successfully revived ancient viruses when the right environmental conditions preserve a specimen. Thus, live forms of the virus could potentially come from frozen mummies and old tissue samples. And when such specimens do turn up, they raise valid alarms: New York construction workers unearthed a 19th-century woman who died of smallpox in 2011 and immediately called in the CDC, only to find that her corpse didn’t pose a threat to humans. A smallpox scab preserved in a letter from 1876, recently on display at a museum in Virginia, raised a scare, but turned out to be harmless.

The World Health Organization will meet to decide the question of the remaining smallpox samples later this month. Read more about both sides of the question at Smithsonain.

POLL: Should the last samples of smallpox be destroyed?

  • Yes, get rid of it once and for all!
  • No, there's more research to be done.
  • I don't know ...can I see what everyone else said?

This Photographer's Dog Is More Patient Than I Am

Posted: 04 May 2014 12:00 AM PDT

There is little information available about Instagram member ma_hovina. He may be Samuel Jurcic, but I cannot confirm it. What I do know is that his dog is remarkably patient and considerate. If a man came up to me and began placing sticky notes all over my head, I doubt I would be as cooperative as this dog. And certainly not as photogenic.

The Most Inexplicable Mashup Ever

Posted: 03 May 2014 11:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Could you possibly think of more odd pairing for a video mashup than Batman and the worst movie ever made, The Room? Patrick Willems wondered what the result would be if Tommy Wiseau, the man responsible for The Room, produced the next Batman movie.

It must have been drugs or something that prompted such a question. It’s like making a pop culture mashup by drawing a name from each of two hats, which were filled with slips of paper by beings from two different planets. That said, he ran with the idea, and Jake Torpey, the guy playing Wiseau, is uncannily accurate except for speaking a bit more clearly than Wiseau ever did. -via Uproxx

A Close-Up Look at the Terrifying Mouth of a Blood Worm

Don't stand too close to the blood worm. It'll shoot its mouth out at you and grab you with its teeth. And the blood worm (Glycera dibranchiata) is venomous, thanks to a venom gland that contains a neurotoxin.

Remember what the 1976 documentary Squirm taught us: blood worms crave your flesh.

Aurora Dog Over Alaska

Posted: 03 May 2014 09:00 PM PDT

It’s neat to see familiar shapes in the clouds, but how awesome would it be to witness a dog in the Aurora Borealis? Astrophotographer John Chumack caught this picture near Fairbanks, Alaska, last month. The leaping dog with his upright ears and curly tail just seems to belong there. How to Get an Egg inside a Bottle

It's a classic demonstration of physics and a neat party trick. Dave Hax, a producer of marvelous videos of household hacks, shows how to slip an entire egg inside an empty vodka bottle. The first step, which is my favorite, is to empty the vodka bottle.

Science is amazing. I'll think I'll give a live demonstration to my kids this weekend.

The Deadliest Animal in the World

Posted: 03 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

What is the deadliest animal in the world? Sharks are pretty scary, and snakes even more so. Ask anyone, and they’ll probably tell you that humans are the deadliest animal. Humans do kill a lot of other humans, but the creature that kills the most humans on earth every year is the mosquito. Check out a picture a redditor posted that illustrates how they can kill you. Then learn about mosquitos, the danger they pose, and what the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is doing about mosquitos. -via the Presurfer

The Doozers Are Back And Teaching Kids About Engineering

Posted: 03 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Do you remember the Doozers from Fraggle Rock? They were those little construction working cuties who were always trying to finish building stuff before a hungry Fraggle came along and ate up all their hard work.

They were tiny and green and adorable, and they seemed to know much more about construction than any Fraggle besides Travelling Matt, of course, because he knew everything!

Now the Jim Henson company is bringing the Doozers back in a brand new animated series to be released on Hulu. It's a fun way to teach kids about engineering, and any new project that may bring the Fraggles back is alright with me!

The Martino Hamper Is Both a Laundry Basket and a Chair

Posted: 03 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

No, Honey, I didn't forget to do the laundry. I'm just getting comfortable! With Brandon Washington's Martino Hamper, delaying your chores isn't a sign of laziness. It's a constructive process that ends with a soft chair. Washington explains that his design "rewards the procrastinators and the seat is only functional when your laundry duties have been neglected."

Washington made this chair as part of a regular creative exercise. Whenever he feels designer's block, he gives himself 24 hours to come up with some product. The Martino Hamper is a result of that process: a simple assembly of a dining room chair and a laundry basket. Washington named it in honor of furniture designer Martino Gamper

R.I.P., Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.

Posted: 03 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., an American actor whose work spanned more than 6 decades, died yesterday at the age of 95. Many readers may remember him for his work on the action television shows 77 Sunset Strip (1958-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974).

But geeks may remember him best as the voice of Alfred Pennyworth, Batman's guardian and friend, on Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1998). Later, he played the villain William Edgars on Babylon 5 (1994-1998).

(Video Link)

Here he is in a classic scene from the Babylon 5 episode "The Exercise of Vital Powers."

Zimbalist played many roles during his life. But his most important were that of husband and father, for which he will be greatly missed:

"We are heartbroken to announce the passing into peace of our beloved father, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., today at his Solvang ranch," the actor's daughter Stephanie Zimbalist and son Efrem Zimbalist III said in a statement. "He actively enjoyed his life to the last day, showering love on his extended family, playing golf and visiting with close friends."

A young man goes on a quest to rescue his family’s missing goat. While on his quest, he meets a sidekick and encounters evil inanimate objects that are magically animated. Does that sound like a fairy tale turned into a Disney movie? The basic plot sure does, but this story is much goofier and will make you laugh along the way. Seth Boyden made this student film at CalArts. -via Tastefully Offensive

Watch A Full Talking Heads Concert From 1978

Posted: 03 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

The Talking Heads are often best remembered for hit songs like Burning Down The House and Psycho Killer, and that music video where David Byrne wears the suit with the ridiculously large shoulder pads, but they had to put in quite a bit of work touring and performing before achieving mainstream success with these popular songs.

They played 130 shows in 1978 alone, an epic year of touring that they admit left them "feeling pretty uninspired", and even though both of these concert videos were recorded in New York that year it's hard to tell that they're burned out on touring, because they put on an amazing show!

A Frog in His Throat

Posted: 03 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Angus James took a picture of a jungle perch he caught in North Queensland, Australia. The fish had apparently already eaten! James sent the picture to Reptiles magazine, and they posted it on Facebook.

"As I was pulling my lure from the fish to release back into the water I noticed two little eyes looking back at me from inside the fish's mouth. After capturing this picture, the little green tree frog leaped straight past my head onto the nearest tree. It was one of the coolest things I have seen in my life! This is one lucky frog!"

Although the frog was saved from croaking, he did not grant James three wishes like he should have. -via reddit

Muscle Dancing

Muscle Dancing is one of those strange videos that makes you wonder why the heck it was ever made, or what the stars were hoping to accomplish, besides driving the ladies wild!

Muscle Dancing is a unique video clip to say the least- it was taken from a Winnipeg public access show called Winnipeg Babysitter that aired back in the 70s and 80s, and even though it is virtually devoid of muscles, and the dancing looks like the trailer park version of Magic Mike, you gotta applaud these two cavalier fellows for their high self esteem and winning smiles! *grin*

The $2,000 Mint Julep

Posted: 03 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT

The Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, today. Although the event is a horse race, it’s not just a horse race. The Derby has quite a few traditions that must be carried out, and one is the imbibing of mint juleps: mint leaves, crushed ice, sugar, and Bourbon. The Bourbon will be flowing fast today, and the price varies.

Churchill Downs estimates it sells about 120,000 of them each year for Friday’s Kentucky Oaks for fillies and Saturday’s Derby. At the track, they go for $11 with a souvenir glass on Friday-Saturday (up from $10 earlier in the week).

For the ninth year, Woodford Reserve, official bourbon of the Derby, has mint juleps at steeper prices. It is offering 79 of them at $1,000 each and another ten at $2,000 each. The engraved cups this year have a gold-plated medallion of a horse and a garland of roses. Woodford says proceeds benefit the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Center for former race horses and that more than $354,000 has been raised with the program.

A Magical Kingdom Indeed! Disney Tarot Cards

Posted: 03 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT

It appears practitioners of the mystical arts are getting started at a rather early age these days, and thanks to accessories like these Disney Tarot cards by DeviantARTist D’Morte, the Arch-Druid of Tinver Moor, they can divine the future in animated style.

These colorful Tarot cards feature the major players in the world of Disney cartoons as each of the 22 figures in the Major Arcana, including Goofy as the Hanged Man, Pinocchio as the Fool, and Sorcerer Mickey as (what else!) the Magician.

They’re the cutest way to anger your ultra-religious parents, and a colorful way to get kids playing with a totally different kind of Magic cards.
