Rare Pygmy Hippo Baby Born

Posted: 19 May 2014 04:00 AM PDT

How cute is this little zoo baby? Lani the Pygmy Hippopotamus was born on March 18, 2014 at Basel Zoo in Switzerland. At birth, the tiny hippo was the size of a rabbit, weighing in at just under 11.5 pounds.

The birth was a happy occasion for the staff at Basel Zoo, as it has been fourteen years since a baby of this species was born there, and it did not survive. Lani's mother Ashaki accompanies her when she is in the outdoor area of their enclosure. Lani is allowed to roam only on sunny days for now, as she needs to keep warm. Her keepers say she enjoys hiding in the bushes and snacking on Fennel and other plant leaves.

Pygmy hippopotamus are severely endangered. They typically live in the rainforests of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Until recently, these countries suffered from political unrest and instability; thus, few researchers and conservationists operate there. Basel Zoo donates 17,000 Swiss francs each year to support a conservation project in Sierra Leone. Via ZooBorns.

Smooth Move: Boy Keeps a Foul Ball, Impresses a Girl Anyway

Posted: 19 May 2014 03:00 AM PDT

You have to watch very carefully, but it's there. This boy knows how to charm the ladies.

This is a scene from a recent baseball game between the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays. The boy catches a foul ball. It appears that he then gallantly offers the trophy to a pretty young lady behind him. But he actually palms that ball and hands the girl a non-game ball that he already had.

Very good. The Padawan has become the Master.

You can watch the full video here.

Bicycle You Can Fit in a Backpack

Posted: 19 May 2014 02:00 AM PDT

From Italian designer Gianluca Sada comes The Sada Bike, a bicycle that can fold to the size of an umbrella. The wheels have a hubless design with no spokes, which allows for the deconstructed bike to be more compact than prior folding models of like size. Once completely folded, it is carried in a backpack as seen in the video, and the designer states that it can be carried on during air travel. Though commenters on the YouTube link mention the Lifetime Movie Channel-esque music on the video as well as the folding process not being shown, all seemed interested in the concept of this easily portable bike. May The Fourth Be With You by fishbiscuit

What If Posters

Posted: 19 May 2014 01:00 AM PDT

A couple of years ago, we told you about Photoshop artist Peter Stults and how he re-casts modern movies with classic movie stars of the past. Then he creates vintage posters for the movie in a series called What If Posters. Back then he only had one gallery of such posters.

Now he has three galleries of What If Posters at his Behance site! See part two and part three, but be sure to check out his other works, too. Yeah, you’d better believe I’d be first in line to see The Big Lebowski starring Frank Zappa. Many of these prints are for sale. -via The Chive

A Short History Of Game Panics

Posted: 19 May 2014 12:00 AM PDT

There's something about the simulated realities presented by video games that have made people who believe they’re the moral majority want to condemn video games from the very begining, and the controversy over kids being corrupted by games began well before Grand Theft Auto hit the store shelves.

Video games aren’t the original source of the scare, they’re just the latest in a long line of things blamed for inciting violence in the masses, as shown by the unfounded fear and panic surrounding Dungeons & Dragons in the 1970s.

Whatever the reason for the fear, game panic is here to stay, and this irrational fear is the focus of Jesse Walker’s piece appearing in the June 2014 issue of Reason entitled A Short History Of Game Panics.

A Light Switch for a Dog

Posted: 18 May 2014 10:00 PM PDT

The lady in the picture with the pink shirt is Heleen. She has limited mobility. Her service dog manages many of her daily tasks.

Heleen owns a lamp with a floor switch. Neither she nor the dog can operate it easily. So some of her friends built a solution: a huge light switch. You can find a basic description of it in English at Instructables or a lengthy description in German here. They used a laser cutter to make the wood components. There's a concrete block in the bottom to prevent it from tipping over.

Now when Heleen needs to turn on or off the light, she says, "Veritas" and the dog will tap the on/off lever.

Hasbro's Russian Roulette Style Family Game - Pie Face

Posted: 18 May 2014 09:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Back in 1968 Hasbro debuted a game meant to bring families together, a game that revolved around a gag which had been used by clowns for decades- the old pie in the face.

What sounded like a good idea to game designers ended up playing out like a clown version of Russian Roulette, so it should come as no surprise that Pie Face didn’t do very well with consumers.

Apparently a family who takes “goo in the face” doesn’t spend more time together, and there’s something rather creepy about sitting around waiting for little Suzy or Papa to take a mini pie in the face, especially if they're sporting a maniacal grin like the family on the box!

LEGO Travellers

Posted: 18 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

When a friend or family member goes on vacation, you are bound to see way too many pictures of them standing in front of wonderful places you’ve never been. Dreaming that it’s you there instead is easier -and funnier- when those travelers are LEGO minifigs. The couple known as the LEGO Travellers are minifigs who take pictures in awesome places around the world and share them with us all.

We don’t know if the people behind these pictures are just one person, a couple, or a group, but if it’s anything less than a large group, they sure get around! (The spelling of traveler with two Ls and the areas they’ve been to indicate they may be Australian.) Follow their adventures at Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The Begun Of Tigtone Is Dark Fantasy Fun

Posted: 18 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

The Begun of Tigtone may sound like a strange title for an animated short, but it’s an appropriately convoluted title that conveys a lot about what to expect from this comedic short directed by Andrew Koehler of Babyhemyth Productions. It’s a parody of the dark fantasy genre, with the cliché anti-hero main character, the video game style questing, and the wizards hard at work wizarding.

The Begun of Tigtone is a really entertaining short if you like dark fantasy, and quite innovative in its own right since the animators used a form of 2D mocap animation technology that warped and deformed the character's faces based on motion capture data.

Pockets and Women's Fashions

Posted: 18 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

I carry a lot in my pockets and on my utility belt. It would drive me nuts to have to deal with the pocket problems that modern fashion presents to women.

My wife informs me that many items of women's clothing include not only tiny, inadequate pockets, but fake pockets. Fake! That would fill me with rage.

I wouldn't mind having a marsupial pouch, as Chris Hallbeck of Minimumble suggests. That would let me carry even more gear!

Biggest Dinosaur Ever Discovered

Posted: 18 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

A farmer in La Flecha, Patagonia, Argentina, stumbled upon some ancient bones and paleontologists set to work unearthing them. The team from the Museum of Palaeontology Egidio Feruglio, led by Dr. Jose Luis Carballido and Dr. Diego Pol, have so far dug up around 150 bones, representing the remains of seven individual dinosaurs of a previously-unknown species. And they are bigger than any dinosaurs found before.

Based on its huge thigh bones, it was 40m (130ft) long and 20m (65ft) tall.

Weighing in at 77 tonnes, it was as heavy as 14 African elephants, and seven tonnes heavier than the previous record holder, Argentinosaurus.

Scientists believe it is a new species of titanosaur - an enormous herbivore dating from the Late Cretaceous period.

The dinosaur species does not yet have a name. One of the scientists said, "It will be named describing its magnificence and in honour to both the region and the farm owners who alerted us about the discovery.” Which rules out “Godzilla,” I suppose. Tacookie Suit by Baardei

There was one suit which Mario found to be complete useless for squishing bad guys, one suit that did nothing but give him googly eyes and a wicked case of the munchies-the Tacookie Suit. It was made of blue monster fur and smelled like chocolate chip cookies, and even though it wasn't very good for combat it led to some really fun cookie parties at the castle!

Stretched Pikachu Hide

Posted: 18 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

A hunter may stretch an animal hide on a wooden rack to prepare it for further processing or for permanent display, such as this polar bear hide pictured below:

(Photo: Mike Beauregard)

Instructables member mosspossum explains that, "as an adult I don't hunt alot but my kids are avid Pokemon hunters. So I figured why not?" Indeed, this is the right way to show your support for your children's hobby.

He cut up Pikachu (hopefully getting some good meat), prepared the hide, and attached it to a ring of branches. You can find his instructions here, which are presumably applicable with other Pokémon.

For Sale: Dracula's Castle

Posted: 18 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Jason Rogers)

Now's your chance to buy a stake in Dracula's castle! Bran Castle in Romania, which has existed in various forms since the Thirteenth Century, is for sale. Prince Vlad the Impaler (1431-c.1476), the source of the Dracula legend, was imprisoned there for two months.

Much later, Bran Castle was the property of the Romanian royal family. In 1948, the royal family was stripped of its property and driven out of the country. After the collapse of the Ceausescu regime, Romania returned the castle to members of the royal family. Those three property holders are now elderly and would like to turn Bran Castle over to someone else. Mark Meyer, a representative of the sellers, described the possible future of the castle:

“Archduke Dominic and his family care very much for the castle, and it’s in far better shape now than it was when run by the government,” says Meyer. “The aim, though, is to take the whole thing a stage further, re-route the road and make Bran a destination, the kind of place people will stay for two or three days.”

There’s enough land to build a small hotel, he adds. “And we’re also installing a glass elevator that will lead to a tunnel in the mountain, with a light show featuring Dracula and the whole history of the place.

“That’s why we’d like whoever buys the castle to continue running it as a tourist destination. This isn’t just a national monument, it’s the largest and most significant attraction in Romania.”

Would you like to live in Dracula's castle?

20 Fascinating Facts About The Legend Of Zelda

Posted: 18 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

For most gamers the mere mention of the title The Legend of Zelda brings to mind the iconic soundtrack from the original NES game, a diminutive pointy eared hero in green, shrub stabbing, chicken tossing and old men in caves who arm kids with swords.

The Legend of Zelda is such an iconic video game franchise that most gamers who have played through every one of Link's adventures feel like they know the game quite intimately, but as Gamma Squad has been rather fond of showing us lately there's a whole lot about The Legend of Zelda that has remained relatively unknown.

Do You Love Science?

Posted: 18 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

In just the last few days, the last line of this comic from Cyanide & Happiness has already become internet shorthand for the entire concept. Science is likened to relationships -you can look at someone’s butt as they walk by and appreciate the view, or you can wake up next to the same person for years, even on days when he/she doesn’t look that attractive.

There’s a difference between enjoying science headlines and actively supporting scientific research by advocating adequate funding and engendering interest in science among young people. If you really love science, what have you done for science today?  -via Ed Yong

Heroic Cat Will Throw the First Pitch at a Baseball Game

Posted: 18 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

A few days ago, a stray dog viciously attacked a four-year old boy in Bakersfield, California. The boy had to get stitches. But the attack could have ended much worse were not for the heroics of Tara, the family cat. Tara immediately leaped into action to defend her human, attacking and chasing the dog away.

(Image: ABC 23)

The cat has been widely praised for her quick thinking and courage during the encounter. The Bakersfield Blaze, a minor league baseball team, will honor the cat at its next game by permitting Tara to throw the first pitch. The AP reports:

Dan Besbris of the Bakersfield Blaze minor league baseball team said Friday that the cat named Tara will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the next home game. Besbris wouldn't reveal how they expect to pull off the stunt, hoping to heighten interest. Tara has already proven she's exceptional, he said.

"It sounds crazy," Besbris said. "But we've got a trick up our sleeve."

Paid Menstrual Leave?

Posted: 18 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT

This is a surprise: some countries have a policy of giving women paid leave from their jobs for “that time of the month.” Is this a well-intentioned perk or sex discrimination? Men cannot take advantage of menstrual leave, but most women don’t need it, either. Japan instituted the policy after World War II; Korea, Taiwan, and Indonesia enacted the policy more recently. Russian feminists rejected the proposed policy. The amount of paid leave varies from two days a month in Indonesia to three days a year in Taiwan.

However, as these countries attempt to move toward greater gender equality in the workplace, menstrual leave has come under debate. Do these policies simply further the notion that women are weak, hormonally-addled creatures controlled by their uteri? Or do they encourage more equality by accommodating female workers’ biological demands, much as maternity leave does?

It’s not even a question in the United States, because we don’t do mandated paid leave at all. What do you think? Read about the policies in place at the Atlantic.

(Image credit: Flickr user Lindsay Attaway, cropped)

POLL: Is paid menstrual leave for women a good idea? You can check more than one answer.

  • Yes, it would increases overall productivity.
  • Yes, it will increase employee loyalty.
  • No, it will be abused by workers.
  • No, the policy is discriminatory toward men.
  • This should be covered by a paid sick leave policy for all.
  • Government should not mandate paid leave at all.
  • I don't know, just show me the answers.

The 40 Year Old Virgin Is Actually A Horror Movie

Posted: 18 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

You may remember watching the director’s cut of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and sharing a few laughs with friends, because the final version of the film was released as a comedy, but T40YOV was originally headed in a much darker direction full of murderous subtext and sociopathy. When the filmmakers tested the film with audiences they discovered that audiences laughed at Steve Carrell’s performance no matter how psychotic his character became during the film.

They decided to add some haha (LOL) bits and recut the whole thing as a comedy, and this dark secret ended up on the digital cutting room floor- until right this second. Watch The 40-Year-Old act as originally intended- like a psychopath.

Clown and Monkey Rob Bank

Posted: 18 May 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Wednesday morning, the Capon Valley Bank in Baker, West Virginia, was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money by a clown accompanied by a monkey. The man wearing the clown mask was also wearing a large nightgown.

The other suspect, possibly a woman, had a slender build, wore a brown monkey mask, a black hooded-sweatshirt, and gray sweat pants.

Police say the smaller suspect had what appeared to be a firearm.

After stealing an undisclosed amount of money, the two left the bank in a blue Chevy Malibu with Va. registration, heading towards U.S. Route 48.

The couple’s getaway car was found later, abandoned and on fire. It had been stolen from a car dealership. The robbery was captured on the bank’s video surveillance system. -via Arbroath
