Don't Move, There's a Bee on You!

It could be worse. He could be binge-watching Grey's Anatomy or Smallville. You just better hope that the bee doesn't get angry at how the series ends.

Parasites: Enlarged and Up Close to Several Degrees Above Creepy

Posted: 25 May 2014 02:00 AM PDT

These photos would be perfect models for monsters in those 1950s horror movies. The ones in which some small, ugly thing in nature, in a freak accident, becomes incomprehensibly huge and after mankind, hellbent on destruction and large meals.

The photos are actually part of an impressive project by Marcus DeSieno, a native of Albany, New York presently obtaining his MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida, Tampa. His project is concerned with the history of science and exploration in relation to the history of photography.

These shots were taken using a scanning electron microscope and subsequently exposed to dry-plate gelatin ferrotype plates. This method blends old and new photographic technology, another objective stated in DeSieno's project description: studying that photo-technological evolution. The final, archival prints are done large to give these parasites their due close-up, Mr. DeMille.

Aleksandra Katsan's Stunning Watercolor Tattoos

Posted: 25 May 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Aleksandra Katsan is an artist at Tattooed Paradise, a tattoo studio in Kiev, Ukraine. Her style, like that of the previously featured Jan Mráz and Koray Karagözler, seems influenced by watercolor painting. She commonly depicts flowers, birds, and butterflies. But it was this colorful image of Pikachu that grabbed my attention.

When he was 4 years old, Noah was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. His odds of surviving were about 50/50. As part of his treatment, he underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow treatment.

As you can see from this split photo, Noah is now a healthy, happy 7-year old.

15 Facts About Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade on its 25th Anniversary

Posted: 24 May 2014 09:00 PM PDT

Twenty-five years ago today, the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade opened nationwide. It was the third movie in the Indiana Jones series, which makes it all the harder to believe it’s been that long. It was in this installment that we learned about Indiana’s family and upbringing, and met his father, Henry Jones, Sr. And there’s a lot more you can learn about the film, all these years later.

1. The original story involved a haunted castle. George Lucas’ original story for the third Indiana Jones film involved a haunted castle. Spielberg had just finished Poltergeist though and didn’t want to do another ghost story. Lucas suggested a storyline built around the Holy Grail, but Spielberg didn’t think the idea was strong enough and wanted a father and son story. As Spielberg tells it, the compromise was a father and son story about chasing down the Holy Grail.

“The dad thing was my idea. The Grail doesn’t offer a lot of special effects and doesn’t promise a huge physical climax. I just thought that the Grail that everybody seeks could be a metaphor for a son seeking reconciliation with a father and a father seeking reconciliation with a son.”

10. The tank chase scene was supposed to be much shorter. It was George Lucas who wanted to have an old tank somewhere in the movie, so Steven Spielberg set about writing a short storyboard with it to be shot over two days. According to Sean Connery, the two days soon stretched to eight because Lucas and Spielberg kept finding new action sequences and comedy scenes they wanted to incorporate in with the tank.

Mark the anniversary by reading the rest of this Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade trivia list from Uproxx.

A Portable, Folding Napkin Table

Posted: 24 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Michael Jan, an industrial design graduate from Tunghai University in Taiwan, developed this clever pinicking accessory. It's a table that stretches between the necks of two people. It has cupholders and a flat surface for plates. There's a bib at the each neck to serve as napkins.

When you're done eating, just fold it up and carry it away.

Chuck E. Cheese Wants To Give Kids Oculus Rift Nightmares

Posted: 24 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

The Oculus Rift virtual reality headgear is supposed to be used as a force for good- better gaming and entertainment experiences and, in some instances, a way for people to undergo immersion therapy and have their lives improved by the experience, but before VR can do good it’s inevitably going to take a turn for the worse.

That bad turn, it seems, begins at Chuck E. Cheese's, who have announced plans to integrate the oculus rift in with the rest of their cringe worthy pizza madhouse.

Here’s what Chuck has in store for the young’ns-

Birthday parties booked during the six–week test in the three markets will offer the Birthday Star a turn in the virtual Ticket Blaster. The headset uses 360–degree head-tracking technology and features a 3D view so users feel as though they are inside the Ticket Blaster with Chuck E. During the experience, the headset will register the number of tickets collected, which will be fully redeemable at the merchandise counter.

Congratulations On Your Graduation! Here's A Terrible Cake!

Posted: 24 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Nothing says congratulations on your graduation day quite like a cake…okay, there are much better things to give graduates than a future case of Type 2 diabetes like cash, a year’s supply of Top Ramen, or someone else’s platinum card, but it seems like people will find any excuse to celebrate with a cake.

It’s one of those traditions that will be hard to break , but we can probably nip the whole cake for every occasion trend in the bud if people keep receiving cakes covered in misspellings, icing globs in unsettling shapes and sentiment fails like "Got 'Er Done!" and "Well Job Done!"

Adam Savage Shares His 10 Commandments Of DIY

Posted: 24 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

DIY fanatics like myself consider Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) to be one of the gods of DIY.

The man can build really cool stuff out of a pile of random stuff, and his diverse skillset, knowledge of materials, and boundless imagination make him an inspiration for crafty folks the world over, so when he shared his 10 Commandments For Makers at the 2014 Maker Faire in San Francisco people paid attention.

Among Adam’s shining bits of advice are these two gems:

4. Use a project to learn a skill. I don't know about you but I need a goal to learn a skill. I can't deconstruct and just learn welding for welding's sake. I need to have something that only welding will bring me. Look around and find something you need to build. Something you can't help but build.

7. Discouragement and failure are intrinsic to the process. Don't hide from these. Talk about them. They're not enemies to be avoided, they're friends, designed to teach your humility. Go easy on yourself. Don't compare yourself to others; go ahead and be envious of others' skills, because frequently you can't not. Use that.

The video clocks in at a whopping 43 minutes, but if you’re only interested in hearing Adam’s sage advice you’re in luck, because you only have to watch the first ten minutes of the video to have your DIY life changed forever!

The Internet Citizenship Test

Posted: 24 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Were you surfing the internet in the 1990s? You might remember some of the classic flash animations, websites, and memes in the Internet Citizenship Test. Then again, that was a long time ago, in which case it’s just a reminder for you. Here in 2014, it’s hard to believe some of the things that used to make us laugh. And it’s also hard to believe that the ‘90s were that long ago.

No, you don’t have to have been around that long to be an internet citizen, but as in other citizenship tests, you need to know some of the history of your new homeland. I got 8 out of 10, just enough to keep my citizenship. -via b3ta

Which Dog Is Guilty Of Making A Mess?

Dogs aren’t very good at concealing their crimes, they can’t help but look totally guilty when their owners come home to discover pillows from the couch torn to shreds, or their favorite pair of shoes chewed to bits.

They’re well aware that the lawn logs are about to hit the fan as soon as their owners walk in the door, and the anticipatory look on their faces as they prepare to receive their punishment is priceless.

This short but hilariously sweet clip is brought to you by America's Funniest Home Videos, who invite you to figure out- which dog is guilty of the crime?

How to Name Animals in German

Posted: 24 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

This flow chart reveals how German animals names are often made up by compounding known animals with the adjective that sets them apart from that animal. However, German is far from the only language in which you find this convention. Mefites offered examples from other languages.
English:

star fish, guinea pig

English:

hedgehog, guinea pig, groundhog, warthog, sea cow, sea lion, catfish, dogfish, zebrafish, flying fox, flying squirrel, seahorse

Chinese:

A squirrel is a Pine Rat. An owl is a Cat Head Hawk. A kangaroo is a Pocket Rat. A dove is a Peace Pigeon. A panda is a Bear Cat.

More Chinese:

Camel deer = moose
Stinky weasel = skunk
Hunting dog = hyena
But my favorite is
Heroic pig = porcupine
Ant-eater is "ant-eating beast." The "beast" part kind of throws me.

ScottDW, the filmmaker and rapper behind the twerking stormtroopers video, offers this glimpse inside the luxurious lifestyle of a famous stormtrooper. Super Nova (his street name) lives in a quiet, upscale neighborhood on Coruscant. Inside his large house is a game room, a dance room, and a fancy master bedroom with a retracting television.

16 Fascinating Things You Didn’t Know About Maleficent

The new Angelina Jolie film Maleficent is scheduled to open in the UK this Wednesday and in the US on Friday. NASA Documents Largest New Crater in Our Solar System

A series of before-and-after images captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal the largest fresh-impact crater ever documented in our solar system. Researchers think the impact that made the crater happened in the spring of 2012, when it first appeared in NASA images taken of Mars. Experts surmise that the impact followed an explosion in the sky when an asteroid entered Mars' atmosphere.

In this video made by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Deputy Project Scientist Leslie Tamppari with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter explains in full the sighting, before and after image comparison and documentation of the new crater.

Detroit Agate - The Motor City's Most Unique Export Since The Edsel

Posted: 24 May 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Fordite/Detroit Agate looks like a magical stone from some fantasy kingdom, and those who come across bits of it must feel like they’ve just missed a meeting with a leprechaun, because the colorful striped stones have an out-of-this-world brilliance, but the truth is Fordite isn’t a precious stone at all.

These striped rainbow colored stones are a byproduct of the automotive industry, chunks of paint buildup which are removed from car painting racks and tumbled like precious stones.

Here’s how these wondrous stones are created:

Before the car painting process was automated like it is now, automotive bodies were painted by hand on long production lines. The vehicles’ paint would drip off and dry on the equipment used to move the automotive bodies. This enamel paint would then get baked onto the rack and solidify. After this process is repeated hundreds or thousands of times, the deposits can grow to be several inches thick.

Enterprising workers who recognized their potential value chipped off these waste products and saved them to be turned into jewelry later. When these stones are ground down and polished, they reveal a dazzling array of colors.
