The biggest news story in telecom this week was AT&T's move to acquire DirecTV, but while that deal works its way through regulatory approval, a new technology will be coming to a town near you: Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Verizon and SingTel announced VoLTE service this week, adding to recent announcements from AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, and MTS. Verizon also leveraged its AWS spectrum to launch double-bandwidth XLTE service and ramped up its healthcare offering with new data centers and cloud services. Valencia, Spain and Kansas City, Missouri will be getting smarter thanks to some innovative work with communications service providers. In Spain, Telefonica is deploying its smart city platform, which centralizes municipal information. Across the pond in Missouri, Cisco is building out a municipal network and developing a "living lab" in downtown Kansas City. Wearables are hot, but is it all hype? ABI Research says the market will grow to $19 billion by 2019, but a single device - the Fitbit - accounts for nearly half of the market today, and flagship companies like Nike are beginning to drop support for their wearable devices.
