I have a very sneaky technique that does just that.
Let's assume the person you are trying to influence does not want to attend a workshop that you know would benefit them.
You start by asking "On a scale of one to ten, one being uninterested and ten being the highest, how interested are you in attending?"
They answer "About a three."
One might think this is where we might try to argue with them to bring up the number. Instead you do something that seems counterintuitive.
You say with sincere curiosity "Okay, A three. Why didn't pick a lower number?"
By explaining their reason they justify their motivations to attend. By focusing on those existing motivations they become more real. This works so much better than arguing your point because it focuses on THEIR reasons.
How do you respond when they answer "I'm a one"?
Again, focus on THEIR reasons and motivations by asking "What can we do to raise that to a two?"
Often such a very low motivation is the result of something in their environment that needs to change. Uncover the obstacle and you can work to remove it.
Remember this works because you are putting them in the position to convince THEMSELVES! Very sneaky and cool stuff!
