Special Issue on "Systems Biology approach to investigate cell death pathways in diseases"
Disturbances in cell death pathways result in pathogenesis of various disorders. Thus, too much cell death is associated with neurological and immunological diseases and too little cell death is associated with development of malignancies. There are many pathological situations when cross-talk between different cell death subroutines plays significant role and treatment of all of these disorders is based on the attempts either to suppress, or induce cell death. To understand the mechanism of complex cross-talks, especially, in multifactorial disorders, an integrated systems biology approach is essential. A unified "language" model) helps to define the proper functioning of the biological system. Systemic understanding of cell death pathways is crucial to refine the molecular diagnosis of diseases, associated with dysfunction of cell death. It is helpful in optimizing the calculation of prognostic and predictive parameters of guiding new strategies of existing treatments and identification of novel targets for therapies based on modulation of cell death pathways. This issue of Cell Death & Disease includes several reviews focusing on different angles of system biology requirement for cell death research and medical applications and will be interesting for cell biologists, bioinformaticians, and physicians.
