| Dads Can Make a Big Difference in Kids' Lives Did you know that one in three children in the United States today lives in a home without his or her biological father? Given our rate of divorce, you may have suspected the rate to be fairly high, but you might not have guessed that one of the biggest contributors to this sad statistic is out-of-wedlock childbirth. If you're thinking that most of these births are to teenagers, you'd be wrong. The rate of teenage pregnancy has actually been declining for more than 30 years. Rather, the increase in non-marital births can be attributed to a sharp increase in the number of babies born to unmarried women in their '20s. Typically, these were not "oops" pregnancies. Often a woman and her partner intend to conceive, or at the very least do little to prevent it. |
