Don't Follow the Crowd By Jocelynn Smith, Managing Editor Dear Sovereign Investor, Where would you go? Imagine that America was crumbling around you — well, that part shouldn't be so hard to imagine — and you had enough money in your bank account to make a go of setting up a home in another country. Would you jump a jet headed for Europe to settle in some bucolic French countryside? Or is living on "island time" more your speed as you kick back somewhere in the Caribbean? The Migration Policy Institute recently released a nifty new tool that shows where most immigrants are settling when they leave their native country, based on data provided by the United Nations. For the most part, Americans aren't venturing too far from home — the top five destinations for American immigrants are Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia. But are they choosing the right place as their new home? Or have too many immigrants settled in those places because they were close to home? Conveniently westernized? Have they completed the type of "boots on the ground" research that gives you the valuable insight needed to understand whether a foreign country is the right fit for you and your family? It may be hard to believe that the melting pot that welcomed all with the dream of freedom, stability, security and wealth has faded. With FATCA kicking in on July 1, the growing threat of wealth confiscation, and a government set on diminishing the rights of Americans, more people will be turning in their passports and heading to a new home. In fact, more than 1,000 people renounced their American citizenship in the first three months of 2014, according to data from the Treasury Department. At the current pace, the total for 2014 is expected to easily surpass the record set last year when nearly 3,000 Americans renounced their citizenship. At the Sovereign Society, we carefully evaluate these factors and more when examining a country. Our "boots on the ground" research makes sure that we know the best places around the globe when it comes to asset protection, offshore investment opportunities, secondary citizenship and second homes.
