The Little Paper Airplane That Could

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Turn the volume down before you watch this video. In the last game before the World Cup starts, England is playing Peru. Blair Valentine is sitting in the nosebleed seats, and fashions a paper airplane. He sends it aloft and down, toward the players, and makes it all the way to the field, where it hits Peru player Hansell Riojas in the head. So who won the game? I dunno, but the little paper airplane won the day! -via Tastefully Offensive

The Playfully Critical Works Of Eric Yahnker

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 02:00 AM PDT

The main focus of multimedia artist Eric Yahnker’s bold and colorful works seems to be the inherent absurdity of modern culture, with the far too pervasive influence of pop culture and the reduction of many powerful symbols into an ironic mockery of their former selves.

Eric’s chosen mediums range from colored pencil to wood, and his works make statements which range from hilariously ridiculous to thought provoking and a bit sad.

Put them all together in a gallery setting you’ve got a show that "strives to navigate the muddy, frequently strained gulf between the reception of recent US affairs at home and abroad."

His solo exhibition, aptly entitled Sticks & Drones, is currently on display at London's Paradise Row gallery.

Force Poke - The Emperor And The Lightning Rat

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Force Poke by Pinteezy

The emperor was getting on in years, and he had lost a lot of his spark to various wars in the stars and a never ending stream of rebels just begging to get zapped, so he had to catch a little lightning monster for his pocket. The shocking thing was- that little lightning rat didn't like to be pushed around, and his little furry body held enough electricity to shock the robe off the emperor himself!

Let the mashup mayhem begin with this Force Poke t-shirt by Pinteezy, it brings new meaning to the phrase gotta catch 'em all.

Captain Picard and Batman Fight Aliens

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Conner Flynn at Technabob suggests that this movie be entitled Batman and Captain Picard Fight Aliens: Prometheus: First Contact Rises. That is an outstanding idea!

I propose that Patrick Stewart play the role of Batman and Ben Affleck play Picard. The xenomorphs would require multiple actors, but Robin Williams should play the Queen.

To flesh out the supporting characters, bring in Gilbert Gottfried to play Alfred Pennyworth and the current Lassie to play Commander Riker.

Artist Jimsmash has the story concept ready to go. Hollywood, get to work.

Akita Attacks Bear -on TV

Posted: 31 May 2014 11:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

The fun starts about :40 into this video. The movie White Fang came on TV and this Akita went on the alert. There’s a bear! The guy had to hold off the dog to keep the TV from getting knocked over! The lady here is right; the Akitas breed we know was bred from dogs that hunted large game, such as bears, boars, and deer.

Have you noticed that pets who never paid any attention to cathode-ray tube TV sets now interact with flat screens all the time? My cats never watched TV until we finally got a flat screen -now they sit and watch anything that’s on. You have to wonder if they consider our TVs as brand-new inventions. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Bear Photographed Lounging in a Hammock

Posted: 31 May 2014 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Rafael Torres)

On Thursday, a black bear in the Pebble Creek neighborhood of Daytona Beach, Florida spent a day knocking over trash cans and bird feeders before climbing into a hammock. It had, after all, been a long and tiring day. It was time to take a break.

Rafael Torres photographed it lying and rolling around in it for about 20 minutes. He got within 60 feet of it. The bear didn't seem to mind. At about 8:15 PM, it climbed out of the hammock and wandered off. You can see more photos of the bear here.

Photographer Jeff Friesen has a side hobby of creating interesting scenes in LEGO bricks. He gave us the 50 States of Lego last year. Just as entertaining are his LEGO versions of playful Banksy artworks. See them all in a gallery at The Brick Fantastic. Buzzfeed has a gallery of some of the best, juxtaposed with the original Banksy artworks.

Ten Offensive Ads From The Last Ten Years

Posted: 31 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

If you think advertisers are done putting out ads which are offensive, featuring racism, sexism, and a general disregard for the standards set in place to avoid turning consumers off to their product, think again, because poorly conceived and totally offensive ads are still rolling out of ad agencies from around the world.

In the last ten years companies like Nike, Groupon and even some government agencies have been releasing insensitive ads that will make you wonder what the heck they were thinking when they made the poor decision to run these ads.

This 2006 ad from the Tokyo Metro Government about earthquake safety shows that some ad agencies haven't moved past the use of racist Little Black Sambo style characters in advertising:

(Image Via Takara In Tokyo)

In this case the black caricature characters are meant to represent bumbling Americans who are shown the "right way" by the smarter white Americans, but they must have known it wouldn't fly because they subsequently edited the images so they feature only white American and Asian characters.

And then there's this Groupon ad which essentially belittles the plight of the Tibetan people:

The Gerber Baby at Age 87

Posted: 31 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

(Image: CBS)

In 1927, Dorothy Gerber was straining vegetables through a seive to make them edible for her baby daughter Sally. Her husband, Daniel Gerber, owned a canning factory. He said that machines in the factory could carry out that process a lot faster. Dorothy proposed that he do precisely that.

Thus was born the Gerber baby products commercial empire.

To market his products better, Gerber held a contest to compose an image of a baby that could serve as a logo. Dorothy Hope Smith, an artist, made a charcoal sketch of a baby who lived nearby. This baby was Anne Turner Cook. Smith won the contest and Cook went down in advertising history at the Gerber Baby.

Cook is now 87 years old and every bit as lovely as she was eight decades ago. CBS News interviewed her about her life as the Gerber Baby. You can watch the video here.

Buddhist Cat Funeral

Posted: 31 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

In 2009, redditor meowmeowstar’s cat died. They took it to a Tokyo funeral parlor especially for pets, and photographed the process of Buddhist funeral rites. The rituals resemble those of human funerals in Japan. Seeing the funeral, cremation, and memorial may be interesting and/or comforting, or they may be disturbing. Be warned that the photo album contains one image of the deceased cat and several of cat bones. They are an important part of the customary interment process. -via reddit

"The One-Man Spinal Tap of Pipe Organ Music"

Posted: 31 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Credit for the headline goes to David Burge, from whom I first encountered this video.

It wasn't until after I had watched the entire video and did some research that I discovered that the man in it is a real person, not an actor performing in a satire. To my surprise, there actually is a man named Cameron Carpenter noted for his high degree of skill as an organist. The man in the video is Carpenter himself, not a comedian lampooning him.

Yes, really!

Thanks to him, we are facing an impending revolutionary moment in music. Carpenter says so at 3:19:

It's frightening. It's monumental. It's just going to be beyond anything that I could have told you about.

Which Carpenter then immediately follows at 3:26 with this profound expression:

You've got to see it to believe it.

How to Tell Someone’s Age When All You Know Is Her Name

Posted: 31 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

According to Nate Silver and Allison McCann, it’s pretty easy to peg someone’s age by their first name -all you need are Social Security name records and actuarial tables. Ha! That’s a lot easier for someone like Silver, who lives and breathes statistics. However, they’ve already done the research on quite a few names for our convenience. You can guess that women named Mildred, Opal, Ethel, Gertrude, or Beulah would be elderly, and that kindergartens are full of girls named Eva, Mia, Sophia, Ella and Isabella -and you’d be right. See tables with the oldest, youngest, most spread-out in time, and most common names for both men and women, and some outliers like Violet, who might be elderly and might be you, but probably wouldn’t be middle-aged.

Of course, there are some names that are easier to peg than others, but they aren’t all that popular. If you ever run into a woman named Cher, Layla, Shania, or Madonna, pity them, for they will never be able to lie about how old they are. -via the Presurfer

Wooden Man - Is That You Tony?

Posted: 31 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Wooden Man by c0y0te7

Tony's original prototypes for his superpowered iron suit were made out of various materials- plastic, ceramic, aluminum and even cardboard, before he settled on making them all out of wood. It was a cheap material, durable and malleable, but he really could have done without the two inch long splinters and the globs of sap he couldn't seem to scrub off his skin...

Celebrate the good old days of super suit design with this Wooden Man t-shirt by c0y0te7, it's way more comfortable than wearing a wooden breastplate, and it won't give you splinters!

Photo Series Featuring Spellbinding Death Masks

Posted: 31 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

When British photographer Rankin teamed up with Beauty Editor Andrew Gallimore to create a mesmerizing series of images entitled Epitaph the name hinted at the underlying theme but did not reveal the visual splendor that awaited the viewer.

The theme is death, brought to visual life through a collection of extremely diverse death masks inspired by Mexico’s Dia De Los Muertos, with a little KISS and horror movie inspiration thrown in for good measure.

The bright pop of the masks sits in stark contrast to the shadowy models covered in black paint, each one identically anonymous beneath the mask created to celebrate a time when they lived in full color.

Double Amputee Cat Flying Handstand

Posted: 31 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Boots came into the care of Life Is Better Rescue when she was just two weeks old -with her rear paws cut off.

The doctor’s have confirmed that her limb amputations were not as the result of a birth disorder and were not naturally occurring – both bones are quite ragged and the exposed nerve endings cause her pain as she grows, gains weight, and tries to walk on what are essentially exposed nubs. Our best guess was that she was either closed in a door or perhaps caught in a recliner as it came upright – not intentional – but certainly being dropped in the night box at the municipal shelter not a humane solution either.

Since then, Boots has been under medical care and is making great progress, but has not yet received prosthetic paws. However, in the last few days, this feisty cat has developed her own way of getting down the stairs! Way to go, Boots! -via Arbroath

The Reverse Food Truck

Posted: 31 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Finnegans)

A food truck is a mobile kitchen where you go to get food. A reverse food truck is a place to go and donate food and money. Finnegans, a brewery in Minneapolis, made one in order to help feed hungry people in the Upper Midwest.  Martin Williams, the company's pro bono ad agency, proposed the idea and Jacquie Berglund, the founder and CEO of Finnegans, ran with it.

The truck travels wherever people congregate in Minneapolis. Sometimes people mistake it for a regular food truck and try to place orders. Organizer Angie Lee says:

They'll try and order a hamburger or a taco and we say no, we're actually taking food. And then they're like, oh my gosh, this is the coolest thing ever.

Finnegans hopes to collect $50,000 worth of food over the summer using the truck.

Early Mankind's Secret Weapon for Slaying Mammoths

Posted: 31 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Early man hunted mammoths for food for about a million years, and then suddenly got really good at it about 44,000 years ago. The evidence for this are great collections of bones dating back about that far, arranged with the aid of man. The bones are from mammoths of all ages, which tells us they did not die naturally, and they lack the gnawing evidence of animal scavengers. They were hunted, possibly herded into the killing area. A paper by Penn State anthropologist Pat Shipman presents a theory of how mammoth hunting took quantum leap: the use  of domesticated dogs.

"Dogs help hunters find prey faster and more often, and dogs also can surround a large animal and hold it in place by growling and charging while hunters move in. Both of these effects would increase hunting success," Shipman said. "Furthermore, large dogs like those identified by Germonpré either can help carry the prey home or, by guarding the carcass from other carnivores, can make it possible for the hunters to camp at the kill sites." Shipman said that these predictions already have been confirmed by other analyses. In addition, she said, "if hunters working with dogs catch more prey, have a higher intake of protein and fat, and have a lower expenditure of energy, their reproductive rate is likely to rise."

The First Thing You Do When You Land On Mars - Phone Home

Posted: 31 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

What’s the first thing you do when you reach the surface of the planet Mars? You phone home, of course, and when you get through to Earth you expect to be greeted by excitement and praise, but if you're anything like the hapless astronaut in this animated short by The Brothers McLeod entitled "Phone Home" you'll be greeted with nothing but disappointment!

Oh well, being one of the first astronauts to land on Mars trumps being married any day!

How Well Can You Spell?

Posted: 31 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT

A spelling test from the Washington Post asks you to spot the words spelled incorrectly in 26 sentences (one for each letter of the alphabet). You aren’t asked to spell the words correctly, so it is really a proofreading test. My score looks pretty decent for a disc jockey, say, but awful for someone whose job title now includes the word “editor.” My only excuse is that I was in a hurry, but y’all already know I’m a terrible typist and proofreader. Maybe you will do better! -via Metafilter

Buckle Up Batman, Here Come The Gotham Bunnies!

The cosplay community is full of imaginative, creative, and talented folks who put their heart and soul into costuming, using their wide variety of skills to create spot on versions of their favorite characters.

Cosplayers live to play roles, and create new characters for their geeky fans to adore, and one of the newest and most fun original incarnations are the Bunnies, based on the Playboy Bunnies of the past.

We've seen the Avengers and Doctor Who themed Bunnies, but these Gotham Bunnies (based on the artwork of Oskar Vega) take the concept to a whole new level of awesome!
