Samurai Soccer

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

It’s doubtful that samurai warriors from Feudal Japan would have been big fans of the beloved sport of soccer/futbol/football, preferring combat sports like MMA or a sport that involve a weapon like baseball, but if a samurai time travelled from back in the day to present day he might find it quite relaxing to kick the ball around.

The guy featured in this video isn't a real time travelling samurai, he's Red Bull athlete/freestyle football world champion Kotaro Tokuda, and he was sent to Brazil by Japanese noodle company Nissin to wow the natives with his freestyle football skills, which he showed off while wearing samurai armor.

At least he won't have to worry about taking a football to the face!

Detroit's Urban Decay As Seen With Google Street View

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Exeter between Seven Mile and Penrose from 2009 (above) up to 2013 (photos below)

Tumblr site GooBing Detroit uses Google's Street View archive to create dramatic visual comparisons of changes in American city streets. It's no surprise that the site's primary focus has been on the longtime ailing urban areas of Detroit, Michigan. These photos arguably provide more stark images than that of any magazine or news feature, in that they are random, unadulterated shots, photographed dispassionately, without a slant or point of view.

The Ten Most Insanely Cursed Movie Productions

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Things go wrong on every movie set, because feature film production is incredibly complicated. Still, some movies stand heads and shoulders above the rest in bad luck. One movie lost four prospective leading men to death -and was never made. Horror films are more likely have spooky things going on, but could that be because everyone’s scared anyway? And then there The Passion of the Christ.

They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but apparently it does three times. First, it struck an umbrella that AD Jan Michelini was holding, singing his fingers. Then, while lead actor Jim Caviezel (who was also hit with near-hypothermia and a separated shoulder) was giving the Sermon on the Mount, he was struck. Not five minutes later Michelini went over to see if Caviezel was ok (since they were lightning bros now) and Michelini was stuck AGAIN.

That’s just one of ten stories of cursed movie productions you’ll find at The Chive.

This Hayao Miyazaki Music Video Is Like A Seven Minute Long Mini Movie

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 11:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

About twenty years ago prolific anime creator/writer/director Hayao Miyazaki took a short break while working on Princess Mononoke to overcome a case of writer’s block, and in the process he created an animated music video that’s every bit as good as his feature length films.

The animated short was created for the Chage & Aska song “On Your Mark”, and it clocks in at an epic seven minutes in length, plenty of time for the anime master to tell a mighty fine tale about an angel and life underground.

One of the many phenomena astronauts experience is the Overview Effect, which is a term for the major change in their perspective that occurs after they view Earth from space. This new cognitive awareness is the inspiration for project Daily Overview. From their website, Daily Overview describes its mission:

"From our line of sight on the earth's surface, it’s impossible to fully appreciate the beauty and intricacy of the things we’ve constructed, the sheer complexity of the systems we’ve developed, or the devastating impact that we’ve had on our planet. We believe that beholding these forces as they shape our Earth is necessary to make progress in understanding who we are as a species, and what is needed to sustain a safe and healthy planet.

As a result, the Overviews (what we call these images) focus on the places and moments where human activity—for better or for worse—has shaped the landscape. Each Overview starts with a thought experiment. We consider the places where man has left his mark on the planet and then conduct the necessary research to identify locations (and the corresponding geo-coordinates) to convey that idea."

This ambitious project features one image per day. See more of Daily Overview's fascinating collection of images at their website. Via Twisted Sifter.

Why You Should Switch To A Fetal Position Desk At Work

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 09:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Sitting in an office chair all day can make you feel like a lazy bag of bones, and standing desks go against everything office workers are all about, so what is the proper position for watching your life fade away at a dead end office job?

The answer is, naturally, the fetal position desk- the safe, comfortable and soothing way to bide your time, and get your mind numbing work done, without doing too much muscling.

Experts agree that having a fetal position desk won't improve your work quality, or make your day go by any faster, but it will definitely make you feel like a kid again.

With a fetal position desk you can bask in the nostalgiac glory of remembrance, letting your mind drift back to a time before you gave up your freedom to become an office drone.

It's free advice, not very good advice but well worth the price, and it's brought to you by the career minded folks at The Onion.

Grumpy Cat Gets a Movie Deal

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Grumpy Cat will star in a movie to be made for Lifetime. The title is Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. What? You expected Grumpy Cat to have a wonderful Christmas?

Tim Hill (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jeff Morris will pen the script, about a pet-store cat that is perpetually overlooked and the 12-year-old girl who can communicate with her. "It brings fun and irreverence that we haven't had at Lifetime," says vp original movies Arturo Interian, noting that his teenage daughters are fans of Grumpy and gave him the initial idea for the project. "We're so known for our heartfelt sentimentality that it will poke fun at those stereotypes."

Lifetime is casting the voice of Grumpy for the live-action project, which will shoot this summer. The cable network said the movie, which Interian describes as "a little Home Alone and a little Die Hard," would also feature cameos from other famous Internet memes.

Although a premiere date wasn’t specified in the article at The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will supposedly air in December. -via Uproxx

Rescued Bear Cub Learns to Enjoy Life

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

In China and Vietnam, more than 10,000 bears are suffering a horrible existence in establishments known as bile farms. These places regularly  and painfully  extract bile from the animals, which is used as an ingredient in traditional medicinal mixtures. The bile extraction causes severe infections in the bears, who are often kept in cages so small they are unable to turn around or stand. Many are caged as cubs, never knowing a life other than in these cruel circumstances, which persist despite effective medicinal alternatives.

According to Animals Asia, an organization dedicated to ending bile farming,

"Bears may be kept caged like this for up to 30 years. Most farmed bears are starved, dehydrated and suffer from multiple diseases and malignant tumours that ultimately kill them."

Smudge the moon bear cub is a happy exception to the dismal story of bile farming. The cub was rescued from a Nanning, China bile farm by Animals Asia's Piece by Peace initiative. Animals Asia converted the farm that had possession of Smudge and other moon bears into a bear sanctuary and education center. How To Keep Your Pets Safe From Coyotes

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Coyotes are a constant presence in our lives, and now live in every state but Hawaii- some consider them unwanted visitors and pests that should be eradicated, others of us simply learn to live with our canine neighbors knowing that learning to live alongside coyotes is a better way to preserve the delicate ecological balance.

However, the ever hungry coyotes won’t think twice about eating our beloved pets, and if we’re going to live with them we have to keep our team safe from those moonlight predators, but with a little bit of knowledge and some preventative measures, like installing taller fences and getting rid of that old bird bath in your backyard, coyotes will steer clear of your house and move on to easier hunting grounds.

Wicked Sword Fight Erupts At Golden Temple

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Every once in a while a violent melee breaks out at a public event, but rarely does that violence involve groups of angry men armed with swords!

A good old fashioned sword fight broke out between two rival Sikh groups at the Golden Temple in Punjab, India on the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, and even though this sounds really cool on paper it looks way less impressive in real life.

If only the sword wielding Sikhs in the video had taken a few notes from Bollywood actors they could have come into the situation with some swordplay skills, but ultimately they come off looking less like Aladdin and more like one of the Three Stooges.

World’s Oldest Trousers

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

You think your jeans are old? Two pairs of pants were recovered from the mummies of men who died 3,300 years ago in the Xinjiang region of China. They are made of animal fur and are the oldest yet discovered pants with a complete crotch. They don’t look all that different from modern pants, according to Lu Enguo of the Institute of Archaeology in Xinjiang.

Even older apparel resembling trousers have previously been discovered in the region, but they were made based on a more simple design and lacked a piece of fabric covering the crotch, Lu said.

Archaeologists believe nomads living in the area invented trousers for horse riding.

Scientists hope to repair and preserve the trousers. The previous oldest pants with a complete crotch was 2,800 years old. -via Arbroath

The latest video offering from ASAP Science asks viewers "Can you trust your ears?" The video provides examples of illusions such as the McGurk effect, which occurs when visual cues alter and "trick" the brain's processing of auditory input, leading to misconceptions about what was heard. The Tritone Paradox and the Shepard Tone Illusions are other auditory phenomena discussed. Watch the video and test your ears to see how trustworthy they are.

Woody Allen - Writer, Director, Comic Strip Character?

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Writer/director Woody Allen has gone from unknown comic to film industry innovator to oddball tabloid target in his lifetime, and ever since the days of Sleeper and Annie Hall Woody has been seen as an odd duck.

Caricatures of Woody have shown up in cartoons, comedy movies and television shows, and once upon a time Woody was the star of his own comic strip called Inside Woody Allen.

The strip was drawn by Stuart Hample and ran in daily newspapers from 1976 to 1984, exploring every possible situation an “angsty, neurotic Jewish everyman” could encounter in his life, except for the strange turn of events that actually took place in his later life!

All By Myself at the Airport

Richard Dunn of Canton, Georgia, found himself stuck at McCarren airport in Las Vegas overnight after he accepted a voucher for being bumped off his normal flight. Instead of heading back to town for the night, he stayed to wait for his new 6AM flight. Inspired by the empty airport, he passed the time by making a video.

According to this interview, Dunn MacGyvered a tripod with tape and a ruler to shoot some scenes, and used a wheelchair and the moving sidewalk to create more movement. The video was shot with his iPhone while he listened to the song on his iPad. Dunn grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick, and is a Celine Dion fan.  -via Daily Picks and Flicks
