Boob And Sock Money Not Welcome Here

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT

If you’re in the habit of keeping your cash in your “chest of wonders”, or conveniently tucking it into your sock, then you’d better reconsider where you keep your cash or else find a store willing to take your sweaty/stinky money, because one store in particular is starting a “boob and sock money not welcome here" trend.

It seems the owner of this store was tired of handling cash which smelled like feet or boob sweat so they instituted this policy for the sake of their sense of smell, and when the sign was spotted by Adam R. Bowser he just had to share it with the world via his Twitter feed!

Breaking Bad Gets the Mr. Men Treatment

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 02:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Eager Beaver Films combines the story of Breaking Bad (just the beginning, so really there’s no spoilers) with the world of Mr. Men, a series of British children’s books and a TV series. The result is downright silly, considering Breaking Bad was never for children. Contains some mild NSFW language. -via Warming Glow

For Sale: Boneless Pork Rectums (Inverted)

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

(Photo: 500CBFan)

This pallet of delicious pork rectums was spotted outside of a dumpling shop in Taipei, Taiwan. Please note that it is a product of the great republic. Despite complaints to the contary, American workers can still produce goods sought across world.

It appears that pork rectums must be properly deboned and inverted before they become sellable. These can be made into dumplings. Here in the South, we deep fry pork intestines and call them chitlins. Alternatively, we may use them as sausage casings. To my knowledge, these practices do not include the actual rectum portion. Perhaps the people of Taiwan prize quality American pork rectums so highly that they price domestic consumers out of the market.

How many pork rectums are present in this picture? How many would fit into a standard shipping container? W.M. Briggs, a statistician, learned that just one South Korean food company imports 2-3 shipping containers full of American pork rectums a month. He crunches the numbers:

The 20-foot container is a standard size; we have all seen these containers on the highway. They measure 20′ x 8′ x 8.5′ feet. The volume is 1,360 cubic feet.

We only need one more piece of information. The size of the average, deboned, inverted pig’s rectum is two feet long, and 2 inches wide. For the purposes of this calculation, we can assume that the rectum is a parallelepiped, which is to say, a rectangular box of size 2′ x 0.167′ x 0.167′ feet.

A standard rectum thus takes up 0.056 cubic feet. We’ll ignore packing considerations for now and imagine that we’re trying to stuff as many rectums as we can into a container. This calculation, which will represent an upper bound, is easy: we have 1,360 available cubic feet, and each rectums takes up 0.056 cubic feet.

That makes about 25,000 rectums per container. Using the universal principle “one pig, one rectum”, this makes it 25,000 pigs slaughtered per container. Of course, packaging adds bulk, so that the actual number of rectums that can be transported per container must be less. A figure of 20% to 30% increase per rectum seems reasonable. That is, each dry rectum, considering the plastic, dry ice, cardboard, etc., is like 1.2 to 1.3 packaged rectum.

This means that each takes up about 0.067 to 0.072 cubic feet per rectum. That gives us a low of about 18,500 to a high of around 20,000 rectums per container.

Now, those Koreans are importing 2 to 3 of those containers every month. Pick the middle figure. That makes 30 containers a year, just going to this one company. That gives a grand total of between 560,000 to 610,000 rectums per year sailing across the high seas on their way to Korea.

P.S. Shouldn't these actually be labeled as boneless pork recta? I cannot confirm it, but I think that rectum is a second declension noun.

Discussion: In Which Shakespearean Role Can You Most Easily See Peter Dinklage?

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 10:00 PM PDT

(Image: HBO)

I posted this question on Twitter. Considering that I have only half a milliwheaton of followers, it's done well. So I've decided to open it up to the larger Neatorama community.

I no longer watch Game of Thrones. After viewing the episode "The Mountain and the Viper," I decided that the show is so dark that I don't want it in my head anymore. But I won't dispute that it's an excellent program and that Peter Dinklage, the actor who portrays Tyrion Lannister, is a master of his craft. This was particularly evident in that same episode during the scene in which Tyrion and Jaime discuss their relative Orson Lannister.

Dinklage has experience on the Shakespearean stage. He portrayed the titular character in Richard III. In what other roles by the Bard would he do well? I can see him as the volatile, wisecracking Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet or the scheming, vengeful Edmund in King Lear.

What do you think? What Shakespeare character would be best for Peter Dinklage?

2014 World’s Ugliest Dog Crowned

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

The annual Sonoma-Marin Fair Ugliest Dog Contest is over, and the winner is Peanut! Although he is world famous as of today, Peanut’s story is a sad one. He was abused and ultimately set on fire by his previous owners. As a result, he is missing his eyelids and lips, and will never again have hair all over. His new owner Holly Chandler wanted to enter him in the ugliest dog contest to raise awareness of animal abuse. A fundraiser exceeded its goal to send them to California for the competition. Perhaps the most famous scene from the 2002 movie Spider-Man shows our hero hanging upside down and kissing a rain-soaked Mary Jane Watson. It's embedded below. If you're limber enough and have the right equipment, you can try to re-enact it. Pete the dog decided to do it in a shower. In the above video, he puts on a wig and smooches a Spider-Man doll.

A Sumo Training Session

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Juergen Horn and Mike Powell are packing in as much as they can before they leave Tokyo to go live somewhere else for 91 days. No, that doesn’t include training as sumo wrestlers, just a couple of hours observing the athletes at the Kitanoumi Beya Stable as they go through their morning training routine.

After about an hour of watching from the sidelines, I started to learn. Mass is an advantage, for sure, but the larger guy doesn’t always win. Agility counts for a lot. Most matches are quick, and smart wrestlers can end their bouts before their opponents even know what happened. Balance is equally important to strength, and speed is most crucial of all.

To amuse myself while watching in silence, I gave each of the wrestlers a nickname and graded them on their performance in the sparring sessions. There was the Prodigy, the Veteran, the Thinker, Cannonball, Shifty, Newbie, Cream Puff, the Natural, Beauty, Sleepy and Workhorse. Prodigy was amazing, while Shifty was small but clever, and usually emerged the victor. His matches with the Thinker were excellent, but he stood no chance against Cream Puff. Cannonball was great fun to watch, as explosive and round as his name, and the Natural looked exactly like how you’d imagine a “sumo wrestler”.

It was an exhausting experience. After watching the big guys work out for two hours, they were so hungry they had to go get breakfast at Denny’s. Read the rest, and see many pictures and a video at For 91 Days.

Experimental Arthritis Drug Grows a Bald Man a Full Head of Hair

There's no cure for alopecia universalis--a complete absence of hair on the body. But researchers at Yale University's medical school may have found a treatment. They gave a drug normally used for rheumatoid arthritis to a man with alopecia. After five months of taking 10-15 milligrams a day, the patient grew hair on his face and body, including eyelashes and eyebrows. CBS News reports:

"The results are exactly what we hoped for," Dr. Brett A. King, assistant professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine and senior author of a paper outlining the results online in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, said in a statement. "This is a huge step forward in the treatment of patients with this condition. While it's one case, we anticipated the successful treatment of this man based on our current understanding of the disease and the drug. We believe the same results will be duplicated in other patients, and we plan to try."

Dr. King hopes to begin clinical trials of a cream form of this drug.

Photographs of Abandoned Mental Institutions by Jeremy Harris

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Photographer Jeremy Harris shot the crumbling interiors of abandoned mental institutions in the eastern United States for his series "American Asylums, Moral Architecture in the 19th Century. These institutions operated when patient overcrowding, misdiagnosis and abuse were commonly reported.

These dismal circumstances almost seem to imprint on the decomposing buildings as photographed by Harris. If Harris' photo series shot over a period of almost a decade seems to have a haunting quality, that is a state that Harris is apparently comfortable with. As he says via his website,

"Jeremy currently resides in a semi-haunted (by friendly ghosts), rustic brownstone in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with his two cats, Delilah and Jezebel."

The Pavement Bookworm

A homeless young man sits on the side of a road trying to make a living - but he's not panhandling. In fact, he refuses to beg. Instead, he's selling books.

Meet Philani Dladla, the Pavement Bookworm of Johannesburg, South Africa. Philani carries with him a stack of books (that he has read) wherever he goes. On request, he will review the book, the author, the publisher - and if you like it, he will sell you the book in order to raise money.

South African cinematographer Tebogo Malope interviewed man, whose story has gone viral. "He has read all the books in his collection and is always seeking for more to read," Malope said to SA People News, "He then sells some of his books as a way to raise money for himself and some of his homeless friends. I'm appealing to anyone that can contribute somehow into his life."

"He's a great role model on the power of reading and can be an amazing ambassador for our young people."

Take a look at the fascinating story of the Pavement Bookworm:

Future Batmen

Casting decisions for Batman movies sometimes surprise people. But that’s always been so. Those who scratched their heads over the casting of Ben Affleck for the next film are those too young to recall the uproar over comedic actor Michael Keaton as Batman before the 1989 Tim Burton film was produced. And now Keaton will always be “the” Batman to me. Who knows if future casting decisions will work out as well.

Test Your Faith with LEGO Firewalking

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Firewalking is the act of walking over blazing hot coals without being burned--or at least badly burned. In some cultures, doing so is a religious rite that serves as a test of faith. Physics teacher David Willey explains that it's possible because coarse coals are poor conductors of heat:

It would seem then, that a firewalk of short length is something any physically fit person could do and that it does not need a particular state of mind. Rather, it is the short time of contact and the low thermal capacity and conductivity of the coals that is important, and it is not necessary for the feet to be moist nor callused, although either may be of slight benefit. Longer walks appear to be possible if a layer of insulating ash is allowed to build up on a well packed down bed, where the temperature has been allowed to fall significantly from what it was when the coals were at their hottest.

LEGO bricks, however, are a different matter entirely. As any parent can tell you, a LEGO-strewn floor is a minefield. To promote The LEGO Movie, Bull Moose, an entertainment shop chain in Maine and New Hampshire, developed a firewalking path covered with LEGO bricks. Will you dare to take of your shoes and walk across it?

Reporter Had Purse Stolen While Reporting Robbery Live on TV .. in Front of the Police HQ!

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

You know you have a bad neighborhood when you're victimized while doing a live report on site. In front of a police headquarters, no less!

KTVU reporter Heather Holmes was in Oakland, California, to report on a violent mugging that left a young woman hurt. According to people who live in the area, crime has become such a huge problem that they regularly witness car being broken into. "Three to four times a day we're seeing people casing cars and breaking in," witnesses said. "We're calling it in to the police every time and they are stretched very thin and so they often aren't able to show up for at least half an hour."

And to underscore how crime-ridden the area has become, Holmes discovered that while she was taping the live segment, her purse was stolen out of the news van ... which was parked right outside the Oakland Police Headquarters!

Holmes tweeted about the event:

The 24 Words That Are Most Known To Only Men Or Women

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Smart Sign)

Mark Brysbaert of the Center for Reading Research conducted a study of the English words most commonly understood specifically be either men or women. Here are the words that men know well that women don't:

 • codec (88, 48)
 • solenoid (87, 54)
 • golem (89, 56)
 • mach (93, 63)
 • humvee (88, 58)
 • claymore (87, 58)
 • scimitar (86, 58)
 • kevlar (93, 65)
 • paladin (93, 66)
 • bolshevism (85, 60)
 • biped (86, 61)
 • dreadnought (90, 66)

And here are the words that women recognize, but men generally don't:

 • taffeta (48, 87)
 • tresses (61, 93)
 • bottlebrush (58, 89)
 • flouncy (55, 86)
 • mascarpone (60, 90)
 • decoupage (56, 86)
 • progesterone (63, 92)
 • wisteria (61, 89)
 • taupe (66, 93)
 • flouncing (67, 94)
 • peony (70, 96)
 • bodice (71, 96)

The assessment examined 500,000 people using a computer-based vocabulary test:

In the online test, 100 letter sequences — which may or may not be real English words — flash across the taker's screen. Pressing the "f" or "j" keys, respectively, will indicate whether the participant knows, but not necessarily understands, a specific word. The test strongly penalizing for marking you know a word that doesn't exist.

I'm a bit skeptical. How could any reasonably functional adult not know what a claymore is? Don't tell me that it's not taught in even the most dysfunctional schools.
