| NYC Subway Dancers Versus the Law Posted: 23 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT In this artistically shot video, London-based, Irish director and photographer Scott Carthy aims his lens at an issue related to Section 1050.6(c) of the New York City Transit Rules of Conduct. Section 1050.6(c) says that, under certain circumstances, performers may work in subway stations, but they cannot operate within subway cars. "Forty-six subway dancers have been arrested and charged with reckless endangerment since January, an NYPD spokesman said in April. Another 50 dancers with less flashy tricks (essentially those who keep their feet on the ground), have been charged with the lesser count of disorderly conduct. If being poked by hundreds of needles or massaged by snakes are too tame for you, here's the next hot thing (literally!) in weird medical spa treatment: fire therapy. And as the name clearly suggests, the treatment involves setting yourself on fire. Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku reports that the fire therapy involves placing a "fire rope" made from some 20 different Chinese herbs on the victim's, er patient's body. After covering the rope with a plastic wrap, two wet towels are placed on top. Then, alcohol is poured on top of the towels and an attendant set the whole thing on fire! Just to be safe, the attendant is nearby with a wet towel to extinguish the flame in case the patient feels that the fire is too hot. The procedure could be used in various parts of the body:
According to The Nanfang, fire therapy patient described the treatment as "a warm and comfortable feeling. I feel a warmth soaking into my body." The treatment, supposedly originating from Tibet, is believed by some to relieve stress and according to this clinic could even cure a range of medical conditions from depression, diarrhea, indigestion, and infertility. No word whether there has been any injuries or fatalities stemming from this practice, but like with many crazy things we've seen on the Internet, what could possibly go wrong? | ||||||||

One of the major trends in libraries in the United States is the development of makerspaces--places where library users can build or fix physical or digital objects. A library may provide tools, such as 3D printers, CNC mills, laser cutters, and digital production hardware to patrons who wouldn't be able to afford them on their own. The purpose of a makerspace is to introduce patrons to emerging technologies and give them the skills that they need for future. The library of the University of South Florida in Tampa is offering a new take on the makerspace trend. It's offering to students a tech tool facility that includes an aerial drone. It's a 5-pound 4-rotor remote-controlled vehicle. This is a circulating item--meaning that students can check it out. Students who want to fly the drone must meet certain requirements:

There’s nothing wrong with a friendly argument in which people refrain from personal attacks or hitting below the belt, but there is a certain type of internet commenter who doesn’t really care if he wins, loses, or changes any minds. He just wants to argue. Still, the producers of this video managed to avoid the most irritating tropes in an unfruitful argument: “Educate yourself!” and “Wake up, sheeple!” and the endless name-calling (on other sites). Some of these magazines, such as Vogue, are hundreds of pages long. Noah Veltman, a journalist, added up the costs of all of the goods advertised in popular magazines for the month of June 2014. Jenni Avins of Quartz used that data to compose a series of charts. Vogue is, by a wide margin, the most expensive. But it's not just because of the staggering size of Vogue. | Tim Burton's Take On Hansel And Gretel Posted: 22 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT There are few creative filmmakers with a more distinctive style than Tim Burton, and even though his “original” style can be traced back to illustrators like Edward Gorey he has made this dark yet cartoony style his own with movies like Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie and, of course, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Well before he made his big screen debut with these iconic features he was applying his dark formula to the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel which aired on the Disney Channel in 1983. For his unique envisioning of the classic tale Tim cast a man (Michael Yama) as the Wicked Witch, Japanese actors as the children, and shot the whole thing on 16mm film for just over $100,000, opting as always for stop motion and practical effects when creating this crazy cool short film. | Mississippi Burning 50 Years Later Posted: 22 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT Fifty years may seem like a long time ago to an individual, but in the history of a nation, the murders of Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney in Neshoba County, Mississippi, are still shockingly recent. The three activists from the Congress of Racial Equality volunteered to travel to Mississippi to investigate a church burning. They arrived on June 20, 1964. They were arrested for speeding on June 21st. They were released late that night, and were never seen alive again. The three bodies were not found until August 4th. All were shot, and Chaney, who was black, had also been badly beaten.

| Pet Owners Can Now Be Legally Buried Alongside Their Pets in New York Pet Cemeteries Posted: 22 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT Burial in the Micmac part of the cemetery is extra. The New York State legislature has now made it legal for pet owners to be buried alongside their deceased animals in the state's pet cemeteries. The NY Daily News reported that the regulation was the culmination of a three year-long legal battle (previously on Neatorama) by the family of former NYPD officer Thomas Ryan, who wanted to be buried alongside his three Maltese dogs in the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, 20 miles north of Manhattan. The regulation may be new, but it just made official a long-standing tradition of the iconic 116-year-old pet cemetery. According to USA Today, there are about 75,000 animals and ashes of 700 pet owners buried at the Hartsdale cemetery. As part of the regulation, while pet cemeteries can now accept burial of human ashes, they may not advertise human burial services. | ||||||||
