America's Scariest Motel

Posted: 28 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(Image Via Imgur)

There’s a lonely old motel out on Highway 95 that is downright terrifying to stay in, and considered by many guests to be haunted. This motel is home to thousands of clowns, and even if you’re not currently scared of clowns you will be after staying at Tonopah, Nevada’s Clown Motel:

(Image Via Imgur)

The clowns are just the beginning of the creepy factor found in this odd relic from the boomtown's past, and people who come for the clowns stay for the fact that it's graveyard adjacent.

(Image Via Imgur)

That's right- if the clowns don't get you, the ghosts of a bunch of gold miners who fell victim to the "Tonopah Plague" back in 1902 certainly will!

Personally, I'd be more comfortable sleeping in the graveyard than a dirty old motel full of clown "memorabilia", but that's just me...

Creeptastic Halloween Costumes Circa 1875–1955

Posted: 28 Jun 2014 02:00 AM PDT

English artist and musician Ossian Brown's book Haunted Air is filled with these spectacular vintage photographs of American Halloween festivities between 1875-1955. The author collected the photographs from a number of old photo albums.

Brown delighted in the resourcefulness of the subjects, some of whom were living in poverty, yet still combined the dark side of their imaginations with ingenuity to produce what he calls “these incredible and phantasmagorical apparitions."

The frightening black-and-white captures of homemade masks and costumes are perfect inspiration for tales of horror. Some images remind me of The Shining and other books and films that make great use of flashbacks to horrific pasts.

The foreword to Haunted Air is penned by film director and master of surrealist horror David Lynch. He writes in part,

“All the clocks had stopped. A void out of time. And here they are – looking out and holding themselves still – holding still at that point where two worlds join – the familiar – and the other.”

Strange Dog Appears in Locked Car

Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

A woman in the town of Adenau, Germany, attended a religious service and returned to her car. When she unlocked it, she found a dog inside -but it wasn’t her dog! She drove the dachshund to the local police station. No one could figure out how the dog got into the car. Then another woman came into the station to report her dog missing from her car.

Here’s what happened: the two women drove the exact same model of car, and had parked beside each other. Their keys also coincidentally worked with both cars. The woman who owned the dog returned first and drove off in the wrong car -the one without her dog. Neither woman realized they had the wrong car, because the only difference was that one had a dog inside. -via Arbroath

Artist Turns Pencils Into Rustic Wooden Vases

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:00 PM PDT

What can you do with a bunch of pencils besides sharpen them up and draw with them? Some people might start a pencil fighting league, others would glue them together and make a number 2 log cabin, but Finnish artist Tuomas Markunpoika uses them to create a unique take on home décor- wooden pencil vases.

The beauty of these vases isn't necessarily in their unique look, but rather in the ingenious way Tuomas goes about making each one:

Tuomas glues the pencils together into sheets, stacks the sheets up to a desired thickness then uses a machine lathe to carve them into a delightfully artsy vase, the combination of meticulously handmade element and a bit of machining giving each vase a uniquely rustic look and enhanced durability.

Chimpanzees Develop a Fashion Trend

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 09:00 PM PDT

For the first time, a troop of chimpanzees have been observed participating in a fad, a meme, or actually a fashion statement. The trend is to wear a blade of grass sticking out of one ear. It’s become a tradition among chimps of one troop in Zambia. This behavior was written up by Edwin van Leeuwen of the Max Planck Institute in the Netherlands. It started when a chimp named Julie put grass in one ear. Seven of the 11 chimps in her troop were soon wearing grass in one ear, and continued even after Julie’s death. There is no known advantage to grass in the ear, especially in just one ear.

To figure out if this was really a tradition, and not just chimpanzees sticking grass in their ears at random, van Leeuwen and his colleagues spent a year observing four chimp groups in Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust, a sanctuary in Zambia. Only one troop performed the grass-in-ear behavior, although all of the chimps lived in the same grassy territory. There’s no genetic or ecological factors, the scientists believe, that would account for this behavior -- only culture.

Lydia Luncz, a primatologist at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, who was not involved with the research, agrees. This study shows how the chimpanzees who learned to put grass in their ears did so through the “natural transmission” of new behavior, she says.

This is how you do science, folks -a year of watching chimps to see if they stick grass in their ear. Let’s hope they were observing other behaviors as well. Van Leeuwen compares this grass-in-ear fad with human groups that wear earrings or a certain kind of hat. -via reddit

Maybe it’s the way her eyes seem to stare into your very soul, maybe it’s the beauty of watching man’s best friend enjoy some fresh fruits and vegetables, or maybe the act of watching Coco-chan's videos is in itself a form of meditation.

No wonder Coco-chan has her own YouTube channel, which is chock full of videos that allow us a peek into the life of one gloriously zen golden retriever. Watch and reflect on your own love of produce...

There May be a Crocodile in a River in England

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Christopher Jones/Telegraph)

There are several rivers in England named Avon. There's one in Bristol in southern England. Much of it flows through pretty countryside and is a favored spot for hikers and boaters. But you may want to stay out of the water for a little while. Several people claim to have seen a crocodile swimming in the river. There is even a photograph of what appears to be the head of an crocodile in the water.

(Video Link)

It was first spotted in February. Police conducted a search, but found nothing. There were further sightings as the months passed. Tom Aditya was among the witnesses. He shot this video of what he claimed was the crocodile. He said that birds in the water fled in fright as the object approached them.

Could a crocodile survive in England? Herpetologists say yes:

Dr Ian Stephen, a reptile and amphibian expert, said crocodiles and alligators could survive in British waters, pointing out that alligators can live through cold US winters.

If real, he added, a crocodile would likely have been released recently to have survived.

Benjamin Tapley, team leader of herpetology at ZSL London Zoo, said alligators were more likely to survive British waters than crocodiles.

Mr Tapley said that although the crocodiles could survive, “they can’t flourish” in the cold waters of the UK.

In the meantime, local residents are taking any chances. They've put up warning signs along the river to let people know about the menace in the water.

How Long Will You Survive In The Chamber?

When you have time to kill online, like a whole lotta time, you can end up deep inside a clickhole- a word that means what it sounds like it means, and it's also the name of a website which is home to quizzes that are a total waste of time, like this hauntingly mysterious quiz How Long Will You Survive The Chamber?

Once you start clicking, reading, clicking, choosing then clicking again you’ll find yourself having some sort of adventure involving something called the Sightless Finder, which is apparently blind but can still find stuff, and a creeping madness threatening to overtake your mind...

The Most Ridiculous Schwarzenegger Compilation Ever Made

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Fartzenegger is one of those videos you find online that initially makes you wonder why anybody would spend time making such a thing, but if you have a silly sense of humor, a nostalgiac love of Ahnold’s old movies and a few minutes to kill you might just see the merit of making such a ridiculous video.

Distractotron Channel sure did, they're the makers of this fine compilation video, and they want you to know that no actual farts were used in the making of this video. None. Just some Foley sounds at the touch of a button and excellent comedic timing.

Fartzenegger is a bawdy little guilty pleasure of a video with some genuinely funny moments, and if you can hear the farts in your head it’s almost as funny with the sound off!

Bear Crashes Party and Eats Cupcakes

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Alicia Bishop and Glenn Merrill of Juneau, Alaska, were celebrating their child’s birthday Wednesday when a bear fell through the skylight of their living room!

"I was literally in the room, and I heard this cracking," Merrill told the paper, describing the sound of the skylight's plexiglass creaking under the bear. "And the next thing you know, there's this bear that, I mean, literally, fell right from (the skylight). It was like one metre away from me."

Merrill told the paper he fled into an adjoining room and closed the door behind him, and Bishop said the animal feasted on her infant son's birthday cupcakes.

Bishop told the paper that she opened a door from the living room that led to the backyard and that the couple yelled at the animal until it casually walked out of their residence.

Wildlife officials believe that the bear was a juvenile male, weighing about 82 kilograms (180 pounds). -via Digg

11-Year Old Invents a Gadget to Prevent Parents from Leaving Their Babies in Hot Cars

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Parenting is a long period of anxiety punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Parenting a baby is a particularly stressful time because a child is at a very physically vulnerable point and the parent may be inexperienced in caring for children.

Parents strap their babies and toddlers into car seats and drive. On rare occasions, a parent may forget that a young child is in the back and accidentally leave him/her in the car alone.

In hot summer weather, this can kill a child.

It's every parent's worse nightmare. When my children were younger, it was a constant source of anxiety for me. Although I never left my kids in the car, I was afraid that I would. Even when I knew that I was driving alone, I would check the car seats.

(Image: Headline News)

Though he is only 11 years old, Andrew Pelham of Nashville, Tennessee understands this worry. That's why he invented the EZ Baby Saver. It's a simple device designed to remind parents that there's a kid in the backseat.

(Video Link)

It's made of duct tape and rubber bands. The driver attaches it to the car door inside handle and the back of the seat. It forms an obstruction which prevents the driver from exiting the vehicle. This, Andrew hopes, will remind the driver to check the backseat.

(Photos: EZ Baby Saver)

Andrew won a young inventors' contest with the EZ Baby Saver. But all he wants to do is save lives:

I just hope that people can use my design in the real world soon because I just want to save one life and then I can say that my idea was successful.

You can find instructions on how to make an EZ Baby Saver here.

A Real Krusty Krab Restaurant from SpongeBob SquarePants

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:30 AM PDT

On the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, the titular character works as a fry cook at a restaurant called The Krusty Krab. Early news reports are uncertain, but it appears that a real version of this restaurant is under construction in Ramallah, Palestine.

An Arabic-language Facebook page purports to be the official site for this business. It shows many photos of the construction of the building.

One of those photos shows Mr. Krabs himself overseeing the construction. Good for him! That's the only way that he can be sure that the builders don't waste a single penny of his money.

There are no photos of Plankton sneaking around the place. But you can be sure that he's there, somewhere.

Photos of Terminally Ill People Before and After Death

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

German photographer Walter Schels' series Life Before Death presents captures of terminally ill individuals at the end of their lives and once again a short time after their deaths.

The subjects granted interviews with the photographer's partner Beate Lakotta in order for him to have context for his powerful images. The interviews were a jumble of daily life minutiae mixed with the existential ponderings that would be expected from those who are aware they are living out their final days.

A few of the peaceful postmortem photos seemed a relief to me, after the tense, distorted faces of some who were alive yet likely suffering in pain, discomfort and fear.

Female Beauty Standards as Rendered by Artists in 27 Countries

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Esther Honig, a Kansas City-based radio journalist, contacted artists from forty different countries, emailing them her self portrait. Honig's only request was to "make her look beautiful." Even if an artist replied with questions, the only way Esther would elaborate was to say she wanted them to make her look like a popular fashion model.

Honig's requests yielded replies from 27 countries. The Photoshopped results were strikingly different by country, from garish makeup jobs (Philippines, Argentina) to a hijab (Morocco). The artist from India was apparently dissatisfied with the bones in her clavicle, so they were erased. Even countries like Great Britain, Israel and Bulgaria, which kept makeup and hair relatively natural, noticably changed Honig's (already beautiful, in my opinion) grey eye color. Eyebrows in some cases were made thicker and darker. Nose shape was slightly shaved down by some. In the end, no country simply put light makeup on Esther's unmade face and called it beauty.

I suppose we all could have predicted that the results would be wildly varied. But the variances do provide some interesting "people watching," all from just one person's face. See more shots from Honig's series, which she calls Before and After, at her website.

"Poop is the Perfect Evidence": How Scientists Discovered that Neanderthals Ate Their Veggies

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Yet another reason why you should eat your veggies: in 50,000 years, future archaeologists may be examining your fossilized poop.

That's what Ainara Sistiaga and colleagues did at an archaeological dig in Spain to add further support that Neanderthals weren't the purely meat-eating species as their modern day reputation suggested - they were actually veggie lovers, too.

"Poo is the perfect evidence," said Sistiaga to the BBC, "because you're sure that it was consumed."

Fossilised bits of faeces, or "coprolites", which glow under blue light because of their high phosphate content, were found nearby the tell-tale samples with high levels of plant-derived chemicals. (Image: Ainara Sistiaga)

Chemical analysis revealed traces of plant-derived esters, which suggest that Neanderthals had a "significant intake of plants." Read the entire post over at the BBC. (Inset photo: Memo Angeles/Shutterstock)
