Ads Aimed at Dogs Smell Like Dog Treats

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 02:00 AM PDT

This poster in Vienna is set a dog's eye level. It features a handsome spokesdog proclaiming, "WUFF RRWAFF WAU!" When a dog approaches to read the text, he'll be able to smell the aroma of dog treats, which has been embedded into the paper.

This is an add for Pedigree-brand dog treats. The ad agencies Gewista and PKP BBDO developed it to tap into the long-neglected canine consumer market. There's a QR code on it, which a dog can scan with a mobile device to learn more about Pedigree's treats.

German Rocket Cats: A Meditation

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

A 16th century German artillery manual by Conrad Haas contains an illustration of a cat with some kind of incendiary device attached to its back. And a bird. The Associated Press called them “jet-propelled cats and birds.” They interviewed a historian who responded, “I really doubt this was ever put into practice, it seems like a really terrible idea.” Zak Smith was astounded that a historian would answer in such a way. Of all the weird things medieval people did in the name of war, this picture seems altogether tame.

European History People sent burning pigs stampeding toward their neighbors regularly and would put a rooster on trial for real actually with a lawyer and everything if someone said it laid an egg without a yolk. If someone like that was soberly strapping a rocket to a cat and you interrupted them in their cat-to-rocket-strapping-room they’d look up like “Yeah?” and they would have this big pinky white person expression on their face like it wasn’t even a little bit weird.

It turns out that the device is less of a rocket and more of an arson method. But getting from “rocket cat” to “of course they did that!” takes us on a ride through some of the awful things people have done in the name of war and progress, in a hilarious essay at The Toast. -via Metafilter

Fondue Slippers

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Satsuki Ohata, a designer in Tokyo, developed the Fondue Slipper--a custom-molded slipper. Like a good pair of pants, it's form fitted and clings to the shape of your body. It's called the Fondue Slipper because it's made by dipping the foot into a liquid, just like eating from a fondue pot.

The liquid in question is polyvinyl chloride heated to 392-572°F. Once there's a good layer of it on your foot, remove it from the pot and allow to it to cool. Once it's hardened, it'll slip on and off. You can wear the slipper inside or outside and easily wash it in a sink.

Ohata is working on a kit that will allow people to make their own Fondue Slippers at home. I can see at least one potential difficulty in this effort.

Last month, TheHumanTim (previously at Neatorama) said his next project was Indiana Jones. And here he is, back with a rocking version of the theme from the Indiana Jones movies! He’s playing all the instruments, just not at the same time. I think he's trying to work his way through the entire John Williams discography. Keep up with TheHumanTim at his Facebook page. -Thanks, Tim!

This Fish Can Pick up 150 Times Its Own Bodyweight

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

This is the northern clingfish (Gobiesox maeandricus). It's a fish common to the Pacific coast of North America. It's called a clingfish because it has a large sucker on the bottom of its body. This sucker can attach firmly to rough, slimy surfaces and withstand a lot of pressure. The image above shows a 0.8 ounce clingfish attached to a 6 pound rock. Under the right conditions, a nothern clingfish can pull 150 times its own bodyweight.

The sucker consists the pectoral and pelvic fins of the clingfish, which are fused together. They're roughly textured on the edges with microscopic hairs which provide friction between the fish and the object it's attached to.

The northern clingfish puts its sucker to good use. It uses it to stick to rocks in rough tidal areas and to attack mollusks.

(Video Link)

Dr. Adam Summers, a professor of biomechanics at the University of Washington, says that this type of sucker would not be useful in dry conditions. But wherever it's wet, it's perfect. Someday, humans may be able to manufacture suction cups based on that of the northern clingfish. These would be ideal for climbing in wet walls, such as up a waterfall.

Astronaut Could’ve Been a Klingon

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

NASA astronaut Steve Swanson is the current commander aboard the International Space Station. He and his fellow astronauts designed the mission patch for Expedition 40. It’s a nice insignia, but Swanson’s first design, shown above, was even better. Before submitting the design to NASA, he and his daughter modified it to show the ISS and the crew members’ names. NASA still rejected it.

"He wanted something that was kind of badass," revealed Mary Swanson, Steve's wife, in a call with collectSPACE, "and Klingons are kind of badass."

Steve and Caroline Swanson's original idea for the patch borrowed its shape and trifoil logo from a patch created for the Klingon Brotherhood, as seen on the 1990's television series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

"Steve grew up watching 'Star Trek,'" Mary explained. "We watched reruns early in our marriage. We watched 'Next Generation' pretty religiously. So, yeah, he is somewhat of a fan."

NASA vetoed the design over copyright concerns. But at least Swanson took his Klingon t-shirt into space!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Serving Bowl Made of Chocolate Chip Cookies

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

The only thing better than chocolate chip cookies is more chocolate chip cookies. Beth Klosterboer is here to provide just that. We've previously seen her create a bowl of popcorn made of popcorn. Now she's used a similar approach to make a bowl of chocolate chip cookies made of chocolate chip cookie dough.

She wrapped a layer of the dough over a bowl and baked it on the bowl.

May I suggest that as a topping she add a half gallon of soft-serve ice cream?

German Artist Creates Replica Of Van Gogh's Lost Ear

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

(Image Via The Center For Art and Media)

It appears that the world of fine art is being taken over by those following in Dr. Frankenstein's footsteps, because you no longer need to paint like Van Gogh, or have his eye for color, to succeed in the art world- all you need is his severed ear.

A German artist by the name of Diemut Strebe has created a replica of Van Gogh’s severed ear using DNA from Vincent’s great-great-grandnephew Lieuwe Van Gogh, and now the strange incarnation of the legendary lopped ear is on display at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Two questions immediately come to mind- "why the hell would anybody do such a thing?" and "is this art?", both of which can be answered the same way- your guess is as good as mine!

Gorilla Shot With Tranquilizer was Man in a Gorilla Suit

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Can you tell the difference?

A strange incident was reported at the Loro Parque zoo in Tenerife, Canary Islands. A zoo employee had donned a gorilla suit and looked a little too real for zoo visitors and one veterinarian.

La Opinión de Tenerife reports that the man had donned a gorilla suit and was running around the park in a drill to prepare employees for an actual animal escape. The tranquilizer-wielding veterinarian apparently did not know the exercise was in progress and shot the zoo worker in the leg from a distance.

Local police arrived at the zoo following reports that a gorilla was loose. The incident was reportedly deemed an accident.

The employee was taken to a local hospital because he had an allergic reaction to the tranquilizer. He is listed in serious condition. We posted video of a similar drill in Japan, in which no one would have mistaken the fake gorilla for a real one.

How to Make Chewbacca Donuts

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

It's not wise to eat a Wookiee. But I'll make an exception for Jenn's Chewbacca Donuts. She made them for today, which is National Donut Day. She used pre-made maple bar donuts, which are rectangular donuts with a maple glaze. Jenn added black and white piping for the face and chocolate frosting for the bandoleer.

The Chewbacca Donut has no pants. So, once again, Chewie won't get a medal.

A suggestion for Jenn's next project: make a donut Millennium Falcon that is to scale with this Wookiee.

The Theme Tune of Your Life

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

According to the folks at UsVsTh3m, the “theme tune of your life” is the song that was #1 on your 14th birthday. And they have a generator to find it. Now, I’ve always known that the songs that were popular during your puberty and teen years are the ones that stay with you for life, I don’t think you can take it down to a single song. “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me” was a good song, but it’s not what I’d claim as a theme. However, the generator gives you the #1 songs before and after, too. That one song is surrounded by a dozen on each side that I have very intense memories of. You’ll probably find some that you want to look up and hear right now! -via b3ta

Photos Of D-Day Locations In Normandy Then And Now

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

It’s hard to imagine the D-Day Invasion in full swing, with soldiers storming the beaches and explosions peppering the coast, when you look at pictures of the beaches in Normandy, France today, but seventy years ago this was the place where the Allies would turn the tides of war and end the German occupation of France.

Photographer Chris Helgren has compiled a series of photos that show key locations in the D-Day Invasion from then (June 6, 1944) and now, and needless to say there's a lot less barbed wire and a lot more bikinis!

Coming To Eat America - Want Some Fries With That Shake?

Coming to Eat America by Chronic Kidney

The studio execs kicked around all sorts of ideas about how to make a sequel to Eddie's classic comedy film, but none of their ideas seemed epic enough for the big screen. Finally they settled on making a mashup film, one that involved a giant green kaiju eating America, and it rated so highly with test audiences that they immediately signed a three picture deal! But where will he eat next?

Make a big splash with this Coming to Eat America t-shirt by Chronic Kidney, it's the tasty way to say "I love me some classic comedies, and some kaiju!"

Zachary Copfer’s Albasaurus

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Zachary Copfer is both a microbiologist and an artist. He discovered that exposing a Petri dish of bacteria to radiation spurs their growth, so he developed a technique for recreating famous portraits using bacteria as a medium. We posted an item about those works last year.

Taking another look, what really grabs my imagination is Copfer's page on the "Albasaurus." Copfer was intrigued by the work of Eduardo Kac and his GFP (Glowing Fluorescent Protein) rabbit named Alba.

Copfer created his own “Albasaurus.” Although the story of falling in love with the creature is to be taken with a grain of salt, the accompanying photo series featuring a bacteriograph of the transgenic Albasaurus is a real hoot!

Stop Motion Animation Brings Folded Tissue Animals To Life

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Normally we think of facial tissue as nothing more than snot collectors or eye wipers, but artist Yuki Ariga has found a much cooler use for facial tissues- she folded them into animal shapes and created a cute stop motion animation short where the little paper animals come to life.

Tissue Animals was created as an ad for the Japanese paper manufacturer Nepia, and Yuki will no doubt see her original concept duplicated by other paper artists who may have previously overlooked the value of an unsnotty tissue when it comes to creating unique papercraft creations.

Games Contained in American Football

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 08:30 AM PDT

The latest comic from Doghouse Dairies made me think. I don’t know much about football, but I can see how Sumo wrestling, tag, diving, and staring fit into what they do. Dancing is the part that makes it into internet gifs the next day. I’m not familiar with the game called Monkey in the Middle, but will take their word for it. But chess? Is it because certain players can only move certain ways? Simon Says might need a bit of explanation, too. The quote accompanying this says,

Basically American Football is like a combination of film school … and war.

Now, that makes sense!

Paratrooper Recreates His D-day Jump at Age 93

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 07:30 AM PDT

World War II veteran Jim "Pee Wee" Martin belonged to the 101st Airborne Division that parachuted into Normandy on the evening of June 5, 1944, just ahead of the D-day landing. He did that same jump again 70 years later, which you might expect to be difficult now that Martin is 93 years old. But to Martin, this time around was easier.

"It didn't (compare)," Martin said, "because there wasn't anybody shooting at me today."

Martin did not jump alone. And he is used to being the oldest paratrooper.

It's ironic, in a sense, because Martin was among the oldest of his bunch in June 1944 -- at 23 years old -- surrounded by others who were mere teenagers.

Together, they parachuted onto France's northern coast in the dark of night not knowing what awaited them. Whatever it was, it would not be friendly or easy, they expected.

"Everybody (was) scared all the time, and if they tell you anything differently they are full of crap," the former paratrooper recalled. "But you just do what you had to do regardless of it. That's the difference."

Learn more about Martin and his experiences both as a paratrooper in World War II and as a veteran at his Facebook page. -via Uproxx

Comic Book Panels Seem Dirty When Taken Out-Of-Context

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Comic book panels are meant to correlate to each other, as parts of a whole page, but when you take a single comic panel out of the page and read it totally out of context from the rest of the issue things tend to get lost in translation, and the whole thing seems downright dirty.

Sure, some comics contain such laughably bad dialog that you don’t even need to single out certain panels to get a laugh, but in this case we’re talking about stoic, stuffy superheroes like Batman, Superman and Captain America, guys who don’t normally crack a smile, much less crack wise.

Bask in the comedic glory of 43 Out-Of-Context Comic Panels That Prove All Superheroes Have Dirty Minds and remember- they’re only dirty in your mind!

Literal Interpretations Of Nonsensical Song Lyrics

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Most song lyrics aren’t meant to be taken literally, if they were we’d all be kissing the sky, putting the ram in the rama lama ding dong and sailing the seas of cheese, but it can be fun to think about what those lyrics would look like if they were visualized exactly as they sound.

Artist Nathan Pyle is obviously a music lover and a lyrically minded fellow at that, so he has created some fun GIF interpretations of song lyrics that make no sense when taken literally.

So, if you've ever wondered what a room without a roof looks like while clapping along, or how it would look if someone tried to set fire to the rain, you can thank Nathan Pyle for the visuals!

28 Ways to Stay Cool With or Without An Air Conditioner

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 05:30 AM PDT

I don't know about the weather in your neck of the woods, but down here in Southern California, it's already shaping up to be a really warm summer. That's why I was so happy to put together our newest Homes and Hues feature: 28 Ways to Stay Cool This Summer.

While you'll have to head over to the site to get the full list, here are a few tips I find particularly useful:

  • Don’t cook indoors. Summer is the perfect time for grilling and it’s a great way to keep heat out of your house. If grilling isn’t an option, try using your microwave or set up your Crockpot or other electric appliances in your garage or somewhere else where they don’t heat up the house.
  • Take advantage of the basement. You might reserve this underground area for storage, but it’s generally a good 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of the house, making it a perfect place to hide out during the peak of summer.
  • Add awnings. The U.S. Department of Energy says that adding awnings to your south- and west-facing windows can reduce solar heat gain in a home by 77%. Also, if you need to replace your windows any time soon, be sure to get double-paned windows, which provide better insulation.
  • Run your wrist under cool water for five seconds. One of your main veins is particularly close to the surface when it passes through your wrist, so cooling it down will spread the colder blood out throughout the rest of your body.
  • Think about snow (or swimming pools). The mind is a powerful tool and studies show that thinking about cool stuff can actually make us feel less warm.
