Karl Lagerfeld Had A Chocolate Statue Made Of His Favorite Model

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT

Karl Lagerfeld has a unique vision of the world, to say the least, and he has often proven himself to be a visionary and trend setter in the world of fashion since he started desiging in the 1950s.

These days he has a lot more similarly “inspired” fashion designers to contend with, and you may think he has softened a bit in his age, but this statue proves that he hasn’t lost one bit of his unique vision.

Lagerfeld commissioned chocolate artist Anya Gallaccio to create a life sized chocolate statue that looks just like his favorite model/muse Baptise Giabiconi, who is wearing nothing but his underwear and a pouty face.

This deliciously tasteless work of chocolate art was created in 2011 and shown in Paris to promote the ice cream brand Magnum, but did this statue scare people away from the brand or make them hungry for more?

This Godzilla Cosplay Totally Crushes The Competition

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT

The fact that Godzilla has come back yet again proves that, for a giant scaly green dinosaur looking kaiju, he’s got some staying power in the world of pop culture, but with all the awesome cosplay out there where’s the costumed love for Godzilla?

Right here, thanks to this amazingly detailed costume created and worn by Sean Sumagaysay. The suit appears to be made out of hundreds of foam pieces, and it looks absolutely perfect even when he’s waving his tail and stomping around.

You can almost imagine the tiny model cities being crushed beneath his foamy feet, and it seems like the only thing the suit is missing is Godzilla's signature atomic breath, but maybe Sean is saving that for his 2.0 version of the suit!

The 'Rock Star' of the Submarine World Just Turned 50

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Alvin is a little three-man submarine commissioned for ocean exploration and launched   in June of 1964. It is the only submarine shared by NOAA and the Navy -and it’s still going strong fifty years later!

The little sub has, as of the end of last year, taken 4,678 dives. It has spent 32,611 hours—more than 1,300 days—under the ocean's surface, with an average dive length of nearly seven hours. It has carried 14,025 humans, usually one pilot and two scientists per dive, to comb the ocean floor. It recovered a hydrogen bomb that was lost in the Mediterranean after a mid-air plane collision. It helped to discover previously unknown life forms congregating around hydrothermal vents off the Galapagos Islands. Most recently it helped to document the sub-surface effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. Most famously it explored the wreckage of the Titanic.

Amazing Video: Lightning Strikes a Moving Truck

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 10:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

A security camera in Strathcona County, Alberta, Canada captured an incredible moment. Al and Betty Perry were driving on a highway when a bolt of lightning struck their Chevrolet pickup truck. Both of them emerged shaken but physically unharmed.

After the bolt of lightning hit the truck, it immediately caught on fire and filled with smoke. The lightning destroyed the car's electrical system, so the automatic locks and windows wouldn't open.

Thankfully, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer who was a few hundred meters away witnessed the scene and rushed in. Constable Brian Jamot pulled the Perrys from their truck, which was partially melted. The Perrys credit Constable Jamot with saving them from certain death.

Disney Princess Smackdown Tournament

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 09:00 PM PDT

What we have here is a tournament of 16 Disney Princesses and other animated Disney heroines. You try to guess who wins each round. Yeah, this is silly, but it’s also fun. The only thing sillier is the arguments in the comments about the definition of a “Disney Princess” and who should be included or not. Also, keep in mind that the matchups they present don't always follow the brackets. I picked 12 out of 15 matchups correctly, and I’m quite pleased with the winner (my personal favorite of the bunch), but I won’t tell you who it is. Try to guess and then go find out for yourself.

Clever Girl Bails out a Capsized Boat

This video allegedly shows children of the Bajau people of southeast Asia. This ethnic group which ranges across Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines is sometimes known as the "Sea Gypsies" for their waterborne lifestyle. At a young age, a Bajau child may acquire remarkable skills in the water, as we've seen previously.

In this video, a canoe has capsized and filled with water. A young girl with impressive agility rolls it under her feet until she has bailed out the water.

A Different Kind Of Fish Story - The Incredible Marrec

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Here’s a fine animated short for all you salty dogs out there, a short about seafaring men and the epic yarns they spin to their fellow sailors.

It’s called The Incredible Marrec, and it was created by a team of directors/animators: Regis Aillet, Alexandre Bass, Clement Chaudat, Etienne Devillée, and Maxime Moreira.

These five fish fancyin’ folks have managed to bring an oceanic tale to life that looks good and tells a mighty fine tale to boot, and you won’t need to strap on your sea legs, or take any Dramamine, to enjoy this salt water story because you can watch it from the comfort of your own home!

The Sixteen-Sided House

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

(Photo: NTPL/David Garner)

In the 1790s, Jane and Mary Parminter, two wealthy women from Britain, built a home for themselves near Exmouth, Devon, UK. They named it La Ronde. Departing from the architectural norms of the time, they selected a hexadecagonal design.

It may seem silly, but this actually permitted the sisters to experience more natural sunlight than they might get from a convention design. The sisters could easily move to whatever spot in the house had the best light. To facilitate this movement, they made each room accessible to those adjoining by sliding wooden panels. So it’s possible to walk a complete circuit around the house without going into the central hallway.

Sir Mix-A-Lot with the Seattle Symphony

“Orchestral Movements from the Hood Night,” he called it last night, just before asking women to come up on the stage to dance. Sir Mix-a-Lot still has it, 22 years later.

In addition to writing a brand new composition inspired by Seattle's own Sir Mix-A-Lot, composer Gabriel Prokofiev also orchestrated two of the legendary rapper's most famous hits for this year's concert, including "Baby Got Back," for which Sir Mix-A-Lot joined Ludovic Morlot and the Orchestra on stage at Benaroya Hall.

And therefore we have new "recorded live" version of Alex’s favorite song. You can also see Mix-a-Lot and the Symphony do "Posse on Broadway" at YouTube. -via Digg

Unusual Dog Defies Odds of Survival

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

When I first saw this image being passed around, I thought it was Photoshopped, or at least a digital glitch. No, this is Pig, a dog who was born with profound deformities. Pig and her litter mates were found in the woods near Atlanta. Kim Dillenbeck of Helena, Georgia, adopted the puppy named Pig. She is experienced in animal rescue and fostering, and figured she could handle it if the puppy died. Veterinarians did not expect Pig to survive.

At 8 months old, Pig weighs about 15 pounds; her sisters are closer to 35-40 pounds.

"She's not fully grown," Dillenbeck said. "She's still gaining weight. At this point, she has the potential to gain another 20 pounds, and that would probably kill her."

But Pig's veterinarians, Drs. David Fuller and Rachael Hudson at Hope Animal Clinic, say Dillenbeck is doing everything right for Pig.

"Pig doesn't know there's anything wrong with her," Dillenbeck said. And true, that's the way Pig acts. But she has plenty of issues. Dillenbeck said Pig is missing part of her spine; she's missing several ribs. And she has vertebrae that are fused and twisted. Near her neck, her spinal cord splits into two separate cords. Her hips and joints are rotated in the wrong positions.

Yet, Pig runs and is good at standing up on her hind legs, and she is in no obvious pain.

Dillenbeck must carefully supervise Pig’s eating and takes precautions with her health. What does the future hold for this dog? No one knows, as she was not expected to live as long as she already has. See more pictures of Pig, including X-rays, at AL.com. -via Arbroath

Man Gives His Dad a '57 Chevy on His 57th Birthday

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Mike King of Louisville, Kentucky is unstinting in his praise and respect for his father:

My dad has been everything to me, he is not my biological father but he IS my father. But this man in this video, my DAD my FATHER, was the best thing that ever happened to me and my mom and I hope I can be a fraction of the man that he is.

When Mike was eight years old, he promised his father, Roger King, that he could buy him a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air for his fifty-seventh birthday. He kept that promise and purchased a perfectly restored turquoise blue Bel Air.

It wasn't easy. Mike had to work 60 hour weeks for a few months to earn the money for the car. As you can see from the video below, it was worth it. Roger is overwhelmed with gratitude at this demonstration of love. Watch it, but have a handkerchief handy.

The Human Race Has Watched "Gangnam Style" Enough Times to Build Three Aircraft Carriers

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Sometime this past week, humanity fell over a mathematical precipice by watching Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video (embedded below) for the two billionth time. It's the most watched clip on YouTube ever.

How much time is that? Well, providing that everyone had the materials, equipment, and skills necessary, that's enough man hours to build three Gerald R. Ford-class supercarriers. The Economist explains using the combined watch time of "Gangnam Style" as a unit of measurement:

At 4:12 minutes, that equates to more than 140m hours, or more than 16,000 years. What other achievements were forgone in the time spent watching a sideways shuffle and air lasso? It took 50m man-hours to complete the “supercarrier” USS Gerald Ford last year. Had people not been watching PSY—the South Korean pop star who released the song in July 2012—they could have constructed three such ships. Alternatively they could have built more than four Great Pyramids of Giza, or another Wikipedia, or six Burj Khalifas in Dubai (the world’s tallest building). The song’s nearest rival is Justin Bieber’s “Baby”, at a paltry one billion views.

Disturbing Typographic Surgery Sculptures

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

It’s generally assumed that what lies inside letters is nothing but ink, or wood or foam or pixels when they make the jump to 3d, but as it turns out their insides look a lot like ours.

They’re full of muscles, veins, nerves and bones just like humans, but their lack of facial features makes it okay to perform surgery on them because you’ll never know when they’re in pain!

Just ask sculptor Andreas Scheiger, he is very familiar with the inside of a letter, and his series Evolution of Type reveals to the world what lies beneath the surface of a letter’s skin, and lemme tell ya- it ain’t pretty!

Squirrels Just Wanna Have Fun

It’s not often we get to see a wild creature having this much fun for no purpose at all, but it’s good to see that humans aren’t the only ones who do it. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Architectural Columns Made of Suspended Charcoal

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

From a distance, these columns appear to be vanishing. It's a clever optical effect by Korean artist Seon Ghi Bahk. He made them by suspending pieces of charcoal at precise lengths on nylon threads. He calls the installation Fiction of the Fabricated Image. It's on display at the Zardok Gallery in Miami.

Bakh used charcoal because it is an organic material. It's made from wood, so these columns are the ghosts of trees. By his choice of material, Bakh expresses that human civilization is built upon the natural world.

Hero Gets a Reward from the Public

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

When a gunman opened fire on the Seattle Pacific University campus Thursday, one person was killed and three were wounded. It could have been worse, except that when he paused to reload, student Jon Meis jumped up and tackled the gunman, pepper-sprayed him, and was one of the students who held him down until police arrived. A 22-year-old with a spray can against an armed killer? You bet he’s a hero! How do you reward such bravery?

Well, Jon is getting married to his girlfriend Kaylie on June 21st. People soon discovered they were registered online, and within 24 hours, all the gifts were bought (except for those that cannot be purchased online)! Then Jessamyn McIntyre, who does not know Meis, started a fund to pay for their honeymoon and/or whatever. They’ve already raised thousands of dollars. Read about how the campaign spread across the internet at Buzzfeed.

Men Took Coffee Very Seriously In The 1950s, According To Commercials

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Men took things, like coffee and their hair, way more seriously in the 1950s and 60s than they do today, at least according to television commercials featuring husbands grumping about their coffee to their poor wives.

It’s no wonder the divorce rate soared through the roof, women were sick of hearing about how bad their coffee tastes, and men fell into the arms of the first woman who made them a decent cuppa joe!

Wake up to Coffee Jerks, a vintage commercial compilation featuring old timey ads about homebrewed marriage trouble put together by Shaun Clayton a few years back.

It’ll open your eyes to the trials and tribulations of those brave domestic folks who had to suffer with making coffee at home, back before there was a Starbucks on every block. How ever did they manage!

Bill Watterson Returns to the Comic Pages

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Stephan Pastis, the author of the comic strip Pearls Before Swine, is a big fan of Bill Watterson, of Calvin and Hobbes fame. Pastis put a joke about Watterson in his strip and emailed it to him, and the response he got was a surprise -the very retired and reclusive Watterson, who hadn’t published a comic in 19 years, had an idea for a collaboration between the two comic strip artists! Pastis writes about the creative process:

At every point in the process, I feared I would say something wrong. And that Bill would disappear back into the ether. And that the whole thing would seem like a wisp of my imagination.

But it wasn’t that way.

Throughout the process, Bill was funny and flexible and easy to work with.

Like at one point when I wanted to change a line of dialogue he wrote, I prefaced it by saying, “I feel like a street urchin telling Michelangelo that David’s hands are too big.” But he liked the change. And that alone was probably the greatest compliment I’ve ever received.

Watterson was the “guest artist” in three strips this past week, in the role of a second-grader who bragged she could draw better than Pastis. The change in style did not go unnoticed, but Pastis was sworn to secrecy until after all three strips ran. Now you can read the whole story at Pastis’ blog.

It also turns out that Watterson was already a fan of Pastis’ work when he was contacted. He told the Washington Post:

“Several years ago, when Stephan did one of his strips that mocked his own drawing ability and mentioned my strip in comparison, I thought it might be funny for me to ghost ‘Pearls’ sometime, just to flip it all on its head,” the goateed Watterson tells me, offering a clear indication that he still follows the funnies. “It was just a silly idea, and I didn’t know Stephan, so I never pursued it, and years went by.”

Did you happen to keep the funny pages from Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday? If not, you can see the week’s story arc beginning here.

Ten Most Unintentionally Disturbing Statues In The World

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT

(Image Via Medicingid)

(Image Via Bestourism)

Public art is meant to be eye catching and pleasant to look at, and not something that will make little kids cry or make people feel uncomfortable being around it, so when public art frightens rather than amuses it becomes the talk of the town.

Putting up a statue of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pose from The Seven-Year Itch is one thing, but putting a statue of a half dissected pregnant warrior woman in the town square for all to see is bound to give the kiddies nightmares!

The artists clearly didn’t intend their statues to be terrifying (although a few are definitely testing the boundaries), but sometimes what looks good on paper, and in the studio, looks rather scary when exposed to the light of day.
