Off the Grid: Escaping Corporate Control By Erika Nolan, Executive Publisher of The Sovereign Society Dear Sovereign Investor, I am not a native Floridian. Native Floridians are rare … it's easier to find a shooting star in the night sky than to find someone born and raised in the state. But Florida, for the last seven years has been my self-selected home … and for me, Delray Beach is a great place to raise a family. But, I get that Florida is the butt of many jokes for its rather weak political leadership, the mix of transients that seem to pass through the state, and the inability of people here to properly vote in the 2000 Presidential election. I've heard some refer to Florida as "God's waiting room" thanks to the large number of retirees who arrive when the weather up north dips below 50 degrees. There are even blogs, twitter accounts and websites simply called A Florida Man, which pay homage to the near-daily stupid happenings down here that are reported nationwide with that exact introduction. As with all humor, the closer to the truth, the funnier it is. Florida jokes are no different. And, the latest state mandate confirms that Florida deserves its reputation. But what advice would he give his own son—a recent college grad? He recommended one strategy with a 97% track record. In fact, it's generated profits on 50 trades in a row. The Sunshine State has made living off-the-grid illegal, citing a code that mandates residences must be connected to the electricity grid as well as to a running water source. Sustainable, independent living is under attack. Think this is just about a few folks trying to be green? Or maybe it's a pack of hippies reliving the 1960s? Not so fast… Say No to the Control of Big Business and Big Government An estimated 750,000 to nearly 1 million Americans are living off-the-grid. Interest in self-reliance is growing around the country in order to lessen — and if possible, cut — all dependences on the government and corporations, which have become bloated and increasingly more controlling. Off-the-grid living doesn't mean living in the dark ages ... it's about being self-reliant. It's about producing your own power, your own water system and septic. A few companies are now specializing in "green" modular homes that come with solar panels and complete battery back-up power in addition to water collection systems. They sell for around $80,000. The initial market was low-cost housing for third-world countries. But now, wealth Americans who worry about the state of U.S. affairs see these turnkey self-reliance solutions as a way to gain peace of mind. True to form, governments and corporations dislike any form of empowerment that allows us to break free of their control. A self-sustaining lifestyle cuts them out. It allows us to develop communities of like-minded folks who crave the hard work and freedom of taking care of themselves. Carl Sagan, an American scientist and Ivy League professor said it best: "One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back." Sovereign Living — Let's Get Our Power Back At my core, I whole-heartedly embrace anything that gives me the control and the freedom to live the best life I can. I believe you feel the same. We share a passion for smaller government as well as the need for each of us to internationalize our hard-earned wealth so that we aren't tied to one government, one currency or one stock market. We are kindred spirits. It's why I am sharing our newest project — something Jeff Opdyke and I, and many of our staff — have wanted to do for years. In the next few weeks, we will debut a new Saturday issue of Sovereign Investor Daily that will harness the best of self-sustaining and holistic lifestyle solutions. Our new venture will provide a host of solutions that hinge upon convenience and inclusion — the one-stop shop for everything you need to live a sovereign life and inclusion in a movement to reduce the role of government and big industry in our pantries, our medicine cabinets and our homes. To me, knowing how to be self-reliant in a natural way is more important now than ever because, in the event of a shock to national or global supply chains, we'll want to have peace of mind.
