Location Notes: This is Part 2 as the Wine Club visited this location in June 2007 when the building was just finished being renovated and there were two large multi-level lofts for sale. Our host is Sam Meller of City Renovators who spent 3 years working on this block long building and finished it in 2007. Originally built in 1904, this gut renovation resulted in four commercial spaces and five large residential lofts. The corner ground floor commercial space has recently been leased to a café business, which is not yet open. Gooseberries will be run by Kim Bond and Ross Lessor. Kim has been the pastry chef at Frazer's for 12 years and is starting a new catering and café business, which specializes in her sweet and savory hand pies. We'll get a sneak peak of the beautiful renovated café space and she'll be providing some of her sample food. You will enter the event through the café at the corner of Chippewa and California. See: https://www.facebook.com/gooseberrieseatsandtreats The 1400 square foot loft style apartment directly above is available for rent at $745 per month and features exposed brick walls, oak floors, granite and marble countertops, a fireplace, and private outdoor deck. http://stlouis.craigslist.org/apa/4480992440.html. The Neighborhood: Dutchtown is a neighborhood, located in far South City, close to the Busch brewery. Originally settled by German immigrants in the mid 1800's, it gets its name from the residents who were referred to as the "Scrubby Dutch" (Deutsch), based on the view that they constantly were scrubbing and cleaning their cement porches and front windows. A neighborhood organization formally named the neighborhood Dutchtown in 1973 in homage to this stereotype. The neighborhood has filled up with other immigrants in the past 20 years, including Bosnians, Mexicans, Asians and Africans. It is known for its extremely affordable housing. Wine Notes: California produces two thirds of the wine in the U.S and 95% of U.S. wine exports are from California, with an increase of 30 % between 2005 and 2006. Regulations state that a wine can claim to be from California only if the grapes come from California. If a certain region is named, at least 75% of its grape must come from that region. However, some wine labels stating "Made and Bottled" may only have 10% California grapes. The best known regions are Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley. However, wine is produced in all parts of the state in 100 viticulture areas, and the wide variety of terrains and climates in California make it suitable for growing every type of grape. However, the climates and soils are especially conducive to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Zinfandel is a distinctive showcase California grape. This is a red grape, which is strong, with a spicy flavor. Unfortunately, many Americans think of Zinfandel as the pink stuff known as White Zinfandel, a recently invented and lesser quality sweet table wine, which has become the second highest selling wine in the U.S. behind Chardonnay.
