The 11 Weirdest Pieces of Celebrity Memorabilia

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Some fans are content with a signed photo, a prop from their favorite TV show, or, at most, a lock of their favorite celebrity’s hair, others want something a little more personal –and often a lot creepier. Here are some of the weirdest pieces of celebrity memorabilia ever sold.

Michael Jackson’s Burnt Hair

Remember back in the 80s, when Michael Jackson, still the reigning King of Pop, had his hair catch fire while filming a Pepsi ad? Well, little did you know that the ad’s executive producer, Ralph Cohen, held on to a handful of those singed locks only to sell them to a collector for $1845 just after Jackson’s 2009 death.

A Lamp That Almost Burned Down Ozzy Osbourne’s House

In 2006, there was a small fire in the home of Ozzy Osbourne. The cause of the blaze was believed to be a bronze lamp that looks like a nude woman. In 2007, that very lamp went up for auction and sold for $2,500.

Suge Knight’s Underwear

The famous Death Row Records filed for bankruptcy in 2009, the company liquidated its assets, which, for some reason, included a pair of executive Suge Knight’s boxer-briefs. The auction neglected to say whether or not they were washed since he last wore them, but it’s unlikely that would have affected the purchase price, seeing as how they were listed at $5 and only sold for $1.

Justin Timberlake’s French Toast

Justin Timberlake may have brought sexy back, but I somehow doubt it rubbed off onto his half-eaten French toast, but apparently one fan disagrees, given that she was more than happy to spend $1,024 on his leftovers.

The Queen’s Underwear

Buying Cher’s bra or Marilyn Monroe’s panties are one thing, but buying the panties of Queen Elizabeth is an entirely different matter. The queen apparently left them on a private airplane she took to visit Chile in 1968 and eventually, they ended up in the possession of Hungarian aristocrat Joseph "Sepy" Dobronyi. When Dobronyi passed away in 2010, his family put the panties up on the auction block where they went for a staggering $18,101.

Marilyn Monroe’s X-Rays

Speaking of Marilyn, it seems that just about anything tied to the actress is worth a fortune. Case in point, two different sets of her X-rays have gone up for sale and both pulled in tens of thousands of dollars. A 2010 auction in Las Vegas featured a set of three X-rays of her chest from 1954. The lot went for $45,000.

Three years later, a whole slew of Marilyn’s medical records dating from 1950-1962 went up for sale, including details of her ectopic pregnancy, X-rays, and proof of her undergoing two plastic surgeries. That lot went for a relatively more modest $25,600, which was $4,400 less than the seller was expecting. Ultimately, you shouldn’t be surprised that when it comes to Marilyn Monroe, anything related to her chest carries a higher value.

William Shatner’s Kidney Stone

Plenty of people get kidney stones, but William Shatner’s is by far the most valuable (at least among those already sold). In 2006, the Shat made all kinds of news when he sold a passed kidney stone to GoldenPalace.com for $25,000. While there were a lot of jokes about how badly he must have needed the money, the proceeds actually went to Habitat for Humanity.

Britney Spears’ Pregnancy Test

If anything will ever make you feel happy you aren’t famous, it might just be that at some level of fame anything you touch can end up sold online. In Britney Spears’ case, that even meant her used pregnancy test. The test was pulled from a hotel trash can where she and Kevin Federline stayed in 2005. The person who took the test immediately sold it to a radio station. The test was then put up for auction, where GoldenPalace.com paid $5001 for it.

Britney Spears’ Used Gum

Britney chewed a lot of gum back in 2004, to the point where many pieces of her already chewed treats ended up selling on eBay for between $5-10. But one seller that year managed to artificially pad his own bids to the point where the winning bidder forked over $14,000 for a piece of chewed up gum with no proof of authenticity beyond a ticket stub from where the gum had supposedly been chewed up and spit out.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Breath

Even if celebrities try to avoid throwing anything away that could be stolen and sold, they still aren’t guaranteed to stop people from making money with weird memorabilia. Even a literal stolen breath can bring in the cash, like when someone auctioned off the breath of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt that was somehow supposedly “caught” as the couple walked down a red carpet together.

The closing bid on eBay? $530.

Scarlet Johansson’s Used Tissue

At least sometimes the celebrity is in on the act, like when Scarlet Johansson give Jay Leno a used tissue after appearing on his show with a cold. Leno auctioned off the tissue in a signed, sealed bag for $5,300, which was donated to a hunger charity known as USA Harvest.

So gang, which of these would you be most likely to bid on or do you have another piece of odd memorabilia that keeps you up at night? I sure wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of David Tennant’s kilts.

This Cop Uses a Skateboard as His Official Patrol Vehicle

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Journal-Sentinel)

To the best of his knowledge, Officer Joel Zwicky of the Green Bay Police Department in Wisconsin is the only skateboard cop in the world.

Many other officers ride skateboards for fun. Zwicky does, too. But this custom skateboard with flashing red and blue lights in the front and back is his official patrol vehicle.

It's his tool to connect with people in the skateboarding community and in parks. The skateboard is a great way to start conversations and form relationships.

So far, Zwicky has pulled over only one person from his skateboard. He once saw a man riding a motorcycle on a park path. So he made a traffic stop from his skateboard and gave the rider a citation.

15 Things You May Not Have Known About <i>The Shawshank Redemption</i>

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 03:00 AM PDT

As many times as the movie is played on cable TV, you may have memorized the dialogue from The Shawshank Redemption. You probably know the movie was directed by Frank Darabont, based on the Stephen King story “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.” But there’s a lot of things about how the film came to be that you don’t know. They are fairly interesting things, like:

5. Darabont wrote the script in eight weeks before pitching it to Castle Rock Entertainment. He decided to drop the “Rita Hayworth” part of the novella because actresses sent their resumes in for consideration thinking it was a Rita Hayworth biopic. During the casting process, Darabont even received a call from an agent who represented a supermodel; he swore the script was the best she had ever read and that she’d be perfect for the (non-existent) part of Hayworth.

9. Originally, all of Morgan Freeman’s voiceover was recorded before any of the film was shot. The fact that much of it syncs up to the onscreen action (see: the scene on the roof where the inmates drink beer) isn’t simple editing. Darabont would play back the recorded voiceover on set during each take for the actors to specifically play off of the audio. But the audio quality of his voiceover was too poor to include in the movie due to tape hiss, so Freeman had to re-record the entire voiceover in post-production.

12. None of the close-up shots of Andy’s hands or feet are Tim Robbins. They’re director Frank Darabont.

There’s plenty more movie trivia about The Shawshank Redemption at mental_floss.

Embroidered Calvin & Hobbes

Bill Watterson, you've been outdone. Laura Hartrich made this embroidered panel as a birthday gift for her son. She used a cartoon in Scientific Progress Goes Boink as a reference, which she enlarged and then transfered to carbon paper.

The project, which measures about 12 by 14 inches, took about 95 hours of work. That's intense! On reddit, she expresses a sentiment familiar to all crafters:

I can see some flaws, of course, and some things I would have done differently if I had more time. I really wanted to get it done in time for my kid's birthday. And I was really ready to be DONE at that point.

Denny's Earns A Dining High Score By Teaming Up With Atari

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Nobody serves up greasy spoon style food quite like Denny’s, home of the Grand Slam breakfast, Moons Over My Hammy and movie themed menu items like the Hobbit Hole Breakfast, but their latest team up with iconic video game company Atari left them with one major problem-how can Atari and Denny’s come together in a way that feels organic?

Denny's Chief Branding Officer Frances Allen came up with the brilliant idea to turn some Atari's most popular games, like Centipede and Asteroids, into food-related titles, and the best part is- you'll be able to download and play the games while you wait for your food to arrive, which is about as long as you'll want to spend playing an Atari game anyway!

Middle School Students Dig Tunnel with Stolen Spoons in Bid to Escape School

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 11:00 PM PDT

The prisoners, ages 11-14, were kept in Djanogly City Academy under the watchful eye of head teacher Elaine Crookes, the toughest commandant in all of Nottingham, UK. But the students were mindful of their duty to escape and rejoin their national forces. So they discreetly swiped spoons from the mess hall and hid along the 12-foot tall metal fence that surrounded the camp. Unfortunately, they had to abandon their attempt before getting caught.

Guards found their tunnel and equipment, so they'll have to use a different method in the future. BBC News reports:

The hole has been filled in and the fence reinforced, the school said.

In an email sent to staff, teachers were warned to be on the lookout after a large quantity of cutlery was found near a hole at the bottom of the fence. […]

The email added that the hole has been filled in and a metal bar placed across the section of the fence to prevent a repeat attempt.

Uncontacted Tribe in Brazil Ends Its Isolation

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 10:00 PM PDT

An isolated tribe in the Amazon rainforest along the Upper Envira River in Brazil is willingly making contact with the outside world, "a momentous and potentially tragic step." Members of the tribe approached Brazilian government scientists on June 29th and asked for help. The Brazilian Indian affairs department, known as FUNAI, had known about the tribe and had maintained a no-contact policy until the tribespeople requested contact. The meeting was somewhat expected, as villagers in the area had reported tribal raids on their crops and tools. FUNAI believes the tribe may be in danger, from other tribes, encroaching illegal loggers, or armed participants in the cocaine trade.

Either way, the tribe’s decision to move and make contact with the outside world leaves them vulnerable. The top priority now, says anthropologist Robert Walker of the University of Missouri, Columbia, is to prevent disease transmission by quarantining the area, giving access only to individuals screened by medical personnel, and providing food and medical care to the elderly and young, who are at the highest risk of infection. “Vaccinations are a possibility at some point,” Walker says. But he adds that immunizations may frighten tribespeople, causing them to flee and carry “pathogens to currently uncontacted people.”

In the end, Hill says, the fate of the newly contacted people may depend on whether FUNAI is willing to provide long-term medical monitoring and assistance, as well as a parcel of land that they can call their own. “So often in the past, people have been abandoned,” says Fiona Watson, research director of Survival International, a nongovernmental organization based in London. “And that first year of contact is extremely important, because that’s when you see these astronomically high figures of people dying.”

Brazilian officials do not yet know the tribe’s origins or what language they use. Read more on the story at Science magazine.  -via Digg

Ten Fun Facts About Forrest Gump

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 09:00 PM PDT

Forrest says that life is like a box of shrimp flavored chocolates that make you run, Forrest, run to the nearest toilet when you’re done. Oh, and his love interest Jenny became a hippie and made some really bad decisions in her life.

Okay, so I left out the part about him meeting Elvis and Nixon, his superstar ping pong playing and his eventful service in Vietnam, but is that all there is to know about Forrest Gump?

Well, according to GeekTyrant that’s far from the final word on this fan fave flick, and their Ten Fun Facts About Forrest Gump reveal what Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and John Travolta have to do with the film, as well as the bits which were based on actual events.

Forgotten Vials of Smallpox Found in Storage Room

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 07:00 PM PDT

We’ve been telling you for years that the only smallpox left in the world were two laboratory repositories, one in Russia and the other at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. We’ve even discussed the possibility of destroying those two stashes. But last week, a scientist cleaning out a room in Washington stumbled upon a cardboard box containing six glass vials of variola virus (smallpox) samples that had been there who-knows-how long.

The freeze-dried smallpox samples were found in a building at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, that has been used by the Food and Drug Administration since 1972, according to the CDC.

The scientist was cleaning out a cold room between two laboratories on July 1 when he made the discovery, FDA officials said.

Officials said labeling indicated the smallpox had been put in the vials in the 1950s. But they said it's not clear how long the vials had been in the building, which did not open until the 1960s.

No one has been infected, and no smallpox contamination was found in the building.

Officials said this was the first time smallpox has been found in the U.S. that wasn’t documented and accounted for. Scientists from the CDC don’t know yet whether the smallpox virus is dead or alive. The disease was declared eradicated in 1980.

Surprise Sloth Sex Shocks Staffers

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 05:00 PM PDT

ZSL (Zoological Society of London) London Zoo keepers weren't privy to a secret between their two-toed sloths Leander and Marilyn. The pair had successfully mated and Marilyn was pregnant, something that the staff learned long after the fact.

Leander had been transferred to ZSL London Zoo from a zoo in Germany in order to be paired with Marilyn. The keepers were making an effort to get Marilyn and Leander to acknowledge each others' presence -- little did they know that they were already sloth sweethearts!

Zoo staff member Tegan McPhail explained,

“To say we were surprised when Marilyn fell pregnant is something of an understatement – we weren’t aware that she’d even been near the male.

When Leander arrived at the Zoo at the end of 2012, he and Marilyn just didn’t appear particularly interested in each other, but we knew that with sloths these things can take some time.

However, with the arrival of the first sloth to be born at ZSL London Zoo, it appears that it was all an act on their behalf and our two very sneaky sloths were getting amorous behind our backs!"

The baby two-toed sloth, whose sex is yet to be determined, is tightly bonded with Marilyn. By all accounts she is proudly showing off her baby. Via Zooborns

Late May 2012 - The day I bought Ophelia.  The 1948 Chevy bus I found on craigslist that was described as, “Runs, Drives, Stops, Registered.” That was all I had to know.

He spent 2012 and 2013 refurbishing Ophelia. He added an upstair “bedroom pod,” an antique stove, and plenty of other details. Now it’s a self-contained rolling home!

Humpty Dumpty Had a Great Fall

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

A cement version of Humpty Dumpty, created by artist Roger Tofte, sat on a wall at Enchanted Forest theme park in Salem, Oregon, since 1970. Until Saturday, when two men climbed the wall. And Humpty fell.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.

Maybe the king’s men were unable, but Tofte, now 84 years old, said he would take a crack at it. Not a repair, but making a brand new Humpty Dumpty for the park.

“It’s going to take a few hours to start from scratch again,” Tofte told KOIN 6 News, but he said he has “some creative juices left.”

The men who caused the accident said they would pay for the damage. KOIN has a video report. -via Arbroath

The Most Common Common Complaints At Restaurants

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Very few workers deal with as many complaints on a daily basis as those in the foodservice industry, and whether you’re a busser, server, or simply pouring drinks in a restaurant bar, you hear your fair share of complaints from customers who expect more from your establishment than they do from most anywhere else.

Many restaurant patrons want things done their way, because in their mind paying for a meal means paying for their idea of service perfection, so it was probably easy for Consumer Reports to create this infographic detailing The Most Common Restaurant Complaints.

Most people have no problem sharing their opinions about dining out, and if you eat out enough you're bound to have complaints, so how do your complaints about eating out measure up to the percentages on this infographic?

The US Is Becoming the Surrogate Pregnancy Capital of the World

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 09:30 AM PDT

(Photo: Matt Rainey/New York Times)

Paulo and João, who are pictured above, wanted to start a family. But as a same-sex couple, they could not produce a child on their own. They wanted to hire a woman to be a surrogate mother for them, but in their homeland, Portugal, that's a crime.

So Paulo and João traveled to the United States and hired a surrogate mother. It's legal in the US, Thailand, Mexico, Ukraine, and India. The United States, however, has a certain edge--a reputation for quality service and an open market. That's why the American surrogate pregnancy business is rapidly growing and increasingly international. Tamar Lewin reports for the New York Times:

Together, domestic and international couples will have more than 2,000 babies through gestational surrogacy in the United States this year, almost three times as many as a decade ago. Ads galore seek egg donors, would-be parents, would-be surrogates. Many surrogates and intended parents find each other on the Internet and make their arrangements independently, sometimes without a lawyer or a formal contract. […]

Four years ago, according to Stuart Bell, the chief executive of Growing Generations, a Los Angeles surrogacy agency, only about 20 percent of its clients came from overseas, but now international clients are more than half. Other agencies report the same trend.

The Jurassic Park Theme As Sung By Goats

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

People love having goats around for all kinds of reasons, from their incredible ability to eat just about anything to the fact that they like to headbutt stuff and stand on top of barrels, but it's safe to say goats aren't raised for their beautiful singing voices:

(Video Link)

A goat's bleat can sound like someone screaming while being strangled, a baby crying, or just as sheepish as you'd expect from a crying kid, which is why using the bleat of a goat is the best way to give your theme song a suspenseful edge.

Jurassic Goats definitely brings an air of suspense, and hair raising goatiness, to the inspiring theme song from Jurassic Park, and once again Marca Blanca has proven that every good theme song needs a goat version!

Spelunking Gone Wrong- Man Gets Stuck In Cave As Water Starts To Rise

Spelunking seems like an extremely dangerous hobby, and truly terrifying for people who have a problem with confined spaces, bats, and the dark.

Those who choose to take up spelunking spend a lot of time exploring underground to earn their stripes, and they learn to deal with unpredictable, and potentially life threatening, situations that often seem to pop up out of nowhere:

(Video Link)

The fellow in this video has clearly earned his stripes, and yet nothing could prepare him for the time he got wedged in between the walls of a narrow rock "tube", as water started pouring in all around him.

Apparently it took him three hours of crawling to make his escape from Lost John's Cave on Leck Fell in Lancashire, England, but I imagine at that point he was just happy he didn't drown!

Ali Kat's Custom Guitars Look Like Classic Cars Because They're Made from Classic Car Parts

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 07:30 AM PDT

This guitar looks like the tail of a 1959 Cadillac. That's because Dave Gartland, the custom guitar builder also known as Ali Kat, made it using Cadillac parts. It even has working tail lights!

Gartland makes a wide array of guitars, but it's his car guitars that have made him famous in the rockabilly culture.

Do you fancy the classic style of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air

How about a mid-1950s Holdren Special? That's a car company in Australia, where Gartland lives and works.

Gartland also makes motorcycle guitars, including modern bikes. Although this looks like the rear end of a Ducati racing bike, it's a functional guitar on a custom guitar stand.

The Batmobile from the 1966 Batman series was a modified 1955 Lincoln Futura. Gartland's guitar version captures the shape and forms perfectly.

It plays well, too. Here's Chris Finnen using it to perform the theme song of the classic Batman show.

The WokMon Can Make Your Stir Fry Seriously Wok

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 05:30 AM PDT

If you love stir frys, you've probably noticed that it's practically impossible to make a restaurant-quality one at home even if you have all the right ingredients and a wok. While some people claim it's the MSG (and it sometimes is), the real lacking element is the heat.

Chinese restaurants cook on incredibly high heat stoves that you can't get at home -until now. The WokMon is a great new design that can focus your stove's flames so you can get the high temperatures you need to make real Chinese dishes. Best of all, you don't even need to change out your existing stove. Just put the small piece over your burner and the large part on the grate to hold your wok for you and you're ready to go.

You can read more about the WokMon, including where to get your own over at Homes and Hues: Wok N' Roll At Home With the WokMon
