The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to re-shape the world in which we live, but the technology is still in its infancy. The future might arrive a little sooner, thanks to the recently formed Open Internet Consortium. The group was founded by industry leaders including Dell, Intel, Broadcom, and Samsung, and is focused on improving interoperability and defining the connectivity requirements. Speed limits were made to be broken, and this week data speed limits were shattered not once, but twice. Look out fiber: Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs took traditional copper telephone lines to speeds that are unheard of - 10 Gbps - and demonstrated symmetrical transmission over copper. The same day, in Turkey, Turkcell, Ericsson, and Qualcomm took 3G speeds to new levels with 3-Carrier HSDPA technology. As recent high-profile hacks have illustrated, global cybersecurity has been performing worse than Brazil in the World Cup semi-finals. Service providers and vendors have responded with improved offerings. Verizon and Telstra recently announced improvements and investments into their respective cyber security, and Silent Circle expanded its encrypted services with global calling.
