A video game that actually sends kids scurrying outside?
The free app, Habitat the Game, does it. And it teaches them to take ownership of the environment along the way.
The game sends kids (ages 7–12) on a real-world scavenger hunt while they care for a virtual pet. Players play games in the app to take care of their pet polar bear, they learn about issues like climate change and they accomplish real, environment-friendly actions—turning off the lights when they leave rooms, recycling and taking shorter showers, for instance. To succeed in the scavenger hunt, they visit places in nature, including spots in WCS’s New York City zoos and aquarium.
