Just When You Thought it was Safe By Jocelynn Smith, Managing Editor Dear Sovereign Investor, Earlier this week, I stumbled across a tech review in The Wall Street Journal regarding new "smart home" technology, in which the climate-control systems sense when you are home and when you're not. It then makes temperature adjustments based on that information. It senses your whereabouts by tapping into your smartphone. So, every time you leave or enter your home, an alert is sent from your phone so the system knows to change the air conditioning and adjust the temperature. While the goal of reining in your heating and electricity bill is understandable, the frightening part is that people are willingly allowing themselves to be tracked. The phrase, "like lambs to the slaughter" comes to mind. But wait! We've already done that with our smartphones and their little GPS chips that track our every movement. The companies may claim they don't actually track your location, just the alert of whether you are at home. But tell that to Edward Snowden and his former associates at the NSA. And even if they're telling the truth — which I doubt — couldn't someone hack into the system and learn if you're home? This is dream technology for a tech-savvy burglar! Between Wi-Fi thermostats, automated kitchen appliances, Bluetooth toothbrushes and more, an enormous amount of data about us is being collected. It wasn't so long ago that we became aware that information on every store we visited, every purchase we made, and every aisle we walked down was collected and sold. And if you think you're safe in your own home, think again! That smart refrigerator is tracking how often you open the door and what you take out. Your toothbrush is monitoring how long you brush your teeth and how frequently. And now your climate system knows when you're home and when you're not. The age of "smart" gadgets — and the parallel growing interest in secrecy — should come as a wake-up call for all of us. The Snowden leaks have served as a reminder of the information-gathering practices of Internet companies, smart consumer product manufacturers, data brokers and even our own government. The very idea of "Big data" conjures images of vast pools of private information waiting to be tapped by spies or sold to the highest bidder. Smart gadgets should be recognized for what they really are — as convenient as they might be, they're just the latest nail in the coffin for privacy.
