MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE All gifts matched, dollar-for-dollar, through July 31—don't miss out. Big Tobacco hid the science on cancer. Big Sugar's hiding it on diabetes. Don't let them get away with it. Donate now to match your gift >> | Dear UCS supporter, "We can just bury the data." That's what a consultant to the Corn Refiners Association (CRA) said they should do if internal CRA research confirmed an independent study showing beverages often have more high-fructose corn syrup than their labels show.1 In other words, if the science doesn't go your way, bury it. Hide it. Certainly don't use it. The sugar industry is running scared from a growing body of evidence linking its product to diseases like type 2 diabetes.2 The tobacco companies did this for years, trying to obscure their product's link to cancer. We've seen it before—and it's up to us to once again ensure that "burying the data" doesn't contribute to more disease and death. Our work to make sure the data is exposed depends on your support. Hundreds of UCS supporters like you have donated this month, while all gifts are matched 1:1. Will you join them? MATCH YOUR GIFT: From now until July 31, all gifts to UCS will be matched, dollar-for-dollar. Double your support to keep corporations accountable to the facts. Give now >> We've dragged corporate science denial into the limelight before. Our exposé on Koch-funded front groups traced billions of dollars in dark money fueling climate denial campaigns and helped discredit biased "experts." Our work to discredit skewed industry "research" has been a key component of successful campaigns to beat back attacks on wind and solar development in the states. Just like coal, oil, and gas, sugar is big business with a lot of money and a lot of reach. Ten major food companies with high sugar "megabrands" like PepsiCo, Nestle, and General Mills spent $6.9 billion advertising their products in 2012 alone—directing a quarter of their ad budgets at our kids.3 They have plenty of reasons—and resources—to muddy the scientific waters. UCS experts and activists aren't just exposing the sugar industry's sweet tooth for burying information. We're taking concrete action now. In just the last two months, UCS supporters have sent 23,000 letters to the Food and Drug Administration calling for proper labeling of added sugar. Backed by the facts on sugar consumption, these activists are countering misinformation and spin from some of the largest corporations in America—and winning. The FDA has expressed interest in strengthening sugar labeling, but the fight isn't over until their policies actually change. No other organization is quite like UCS. No one else uses the combination of hard science and powerful advocacy the way we do. And no other organization boasts of supporters as thoughtful and generous as you. That's why I hope you'll step up right now to take advantage of this special matching gift offer, donating while your gift matters twice as much. There are only a few days left to double your gift. Please, give now >> | Sincerely,
