What kind of protection do cheetahs need?

Can cheetahs outrun extinction?
Dear Friend Of National Geographic,

You probably know that cheetahs are the fastest land mammals, able to reach 60 mph in only three seconds.

But, are you also aware that cheetahs are among the most endangered land mammals? Sadly, they have disappeared from 75% of their natural range in Africa.

As dire as their situation is, by working together, we can protect and restore the magnificent cheetah. Please make your special contribution online now to save cheetahs and other endangered big cats.

Help save cheetahs and other threatened big catsCheetahs' especially keen eyesight allows them to hunt during the day. As their hunting range increasingly overlaps with areas where herders are grazing their livestock, conflicts arise, resulting in retaliatory killing of cheetahs.

All too often, when a cheetah attacks a goat or sheep, herders will retaliate with poison and bullets–sometimes killing cheetah cubs and other cheetahs not involved in the predation.

Additionally, cheetahs are increasingly becoming victims of poachers. Unlike tigers, it is not their skins or bones that are so valuable, but rather the live cheetah–most especially cubs–in the exotic pet trade.

Horribly, these beautiful animals, built to run, are forced to spend their lives miserably confined to a cage.

Friend Of National Geographic, help change the future for cheetahs and other big cats in the wild. Make your tax-deductible gift now.

Your contribution today will immediately help our grantees in the field go to work to:
  • Bring the latest technology to find poachers and provide evidence so local authorities can effectively prosecute these animal killers
  • Implement innovative conservation programs that protect cheetahs and livestock – preventing retaliatory killings of big cats
  • Help local communities to become champions for cheetahs and other big cats and protect them from hunters and poachers
If we act now, we can stop cheetahs from disappearing from the wild. Please give whatever you can to help today.

Friend Of National Geographic, thank you.

Sincerely,

Sarah StallingsSarah

P.S. Past contributions from caring people like you are already making a real difference for lions and tigers. Will you help today so that we can save cheetahs, too?

I so appreciate your willingness to do what you can to help save cheetahs and other big cats.
