The final goal post is up on our Football for Hope program in Africa!
As a social legacy initiative from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Architecture for Humanity, together with FIFA and Streetfootballworld, built community centers along with football pitches across Africa for the benefit of local nonprofit organizations. Each center uses soccer as a means for social change, by creating spaces attached to football fields that will pair local NGOs with the communities they serve:
“Football for Hope creates positive social legacy from the world’s favorite sport by breaking down social barriers and training the next generation. The unique design approach to every centre in our program allowed each community to integrate their own identity, which may be the greatest asset in the years to come. I sincerely hope others can learn from these successes and hopefully replicate similar programs in the future.”
-Darren Gill, Architecture for Humanity, Regional Program Manager
In total, 19 projects were completed in 15 African countries, each bringing hope and pride to the neighborhoods. For more information about the Football for Hope program, read our full press release here.
Last week we had four members of our Football for Hope team at the headquarters office, sharing their experiences.
Thank you to all staff, design fellows, partners, and community members who worked to bring these centers to life! Learn more about each center, and take a peek at the preview video below to hear about the team's experience!
We are thrilled that these buildings are serving the needs of local nonprofit organizations and will continue to benefit the communities both on and off the field.
