CenturyLink Launches Symmetrical Gigabit Networks in Portions of 16 Cities

CenturyLink has launched symmetrical gigabit speeds for residential and business customers in select locations in 16 cities. Just how select is the question, but even skeptics might agree symmetrical broadband availability at such speeds is a helpful development. CenturyLink expects to have gigabit services available to "hundreds of thousands of residential and business customers" within the next 12 months.



Peer 1 Hosting, a Web infrastructure and cloud hosting provider, recently announced that Total Uptime Technologies, a provider of cloud solutions, is the newest member of its Smart Partner Program. As a member, Total Uptime will leverage Peer 1 Hosting's data centers in San Jose, Calif., and Portsmouth, UK, to better serve global customers. Total Uptime has been using Peer 1's wholly-owned FastFiber Network.



Veryx Gets Recognized by Frost & Sullivan Veryx Technologies, a company that provides testing, automation, development and monitoring solutions, recently announced that it has been recognized with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership in Carrier Ethernet testing.



Remember what it was like when Google Fiber first got introduced? The idea that not only could Internet speeds be had that were enormously faster than most residential offerings-and even some commercial offerings-but that all of it could be had without the pernicious bandwidth cap that plagues many services to this very day? That captured a lot of imaginations, and almost certainly, terrified some ISPs who had likely been banking on having next to no competition forever. A new report from Pop Herald, meanwhile, suggests that one more company is responding to Google Fiber's competitive threat: Time Warner Cable.



Lightower Fiber Networks, an all-fiber provider of custom, high-capacity network services that ensure optimal application and business performance, recently announced that it will provide its all-fiber portfolio of Ethernet, SONET, Wavelengths, Dark Fiber, Collocation and Internet services to the members of MiCTA, a national non-profit group purchasing organization. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced that four million households in his state now have access to faster speeds thanks to the completion of a massive undertaking. At the end of last week, the governor made his announcement, saying that $100 million bought more than 1,000 miles of new high speed fiber optic cable.
