The Justice League: When the world needs heroes, the Justice League is often there to save the day! Often shortened to JLA, this organization consists of some of the finest heroes ever introduced by the artists and writers at DC Comics, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Martian Manhunter, the Green Lantern, the Flash, Shazam, Green Arrow, Hawkgirl, Cyborg, Captain Marvel, Aquaman, and more! The league first appeared in The Brave and The Bold February/March issue in 1960 as a team-up tale involving some of DC's greatest heroes. The first Justice League comic was published later that year, when they got their own comic title. Its roster changes frequently as new heroes join with the old in the battle against evil. The Justice League was completely rebooted, as was the rest of the DC Universe, with the advent of The New 52. Beyond the comics, the Justice League may soon have its own film as well, assuming that the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film due in 2016 is the beginning of the saga. |

Superman: Among superheroes, Superman might just be the most well-known of them all. Faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and capable of soaring the skies like a bird on the wing. Few can match the power of Superman, whose Kryptonian origin give him a host of amazing powers that allow him to battle on even footing with some of the greatest titans of the DC Universe. Superman first appeared 1938, in Detective Comics, Inc Action Comics #1. His subsequent success allowed Superman to help create the superhero genre. Indeed, Superman is something of an archetype among heroes, possessing phenomenal power and the drive to use them for the benefit of mankind. He is, in most respects, a paragon of justice and virtue. Throughout the years Superman has battled countless foes, including the deadly Doomsday, the strange Bizarro, the rogue General Zod, and of course, his legendary arch nemesis, Lex Luthor. Superman has also been featured in video games and films, the latest of which was Man of Steel in 2013. |

Batman: The mean streets of Gotham are protected by a Caped Crusader, and this vigilante needs no mystic powers or superhuman abilities to defend his city, he needs only skill. Batman is another popular hero in the DC Universe, as well as a cultural icon as easily recognized as some of his fellow heroes! Batman originally appeared in Detective Comics issue #27 in May of 1939, and his popularity ensured that he got his own comic book title within a year. He has also been adapted into several other medias over the years, including video games, cartoons, and movies. Throughout his career, Batman has fought against his own rogue's gallery of villains: the infamous Joker, Two Face, Poison Ivy, Bane, Ra's al Ghul, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, and more. Some of these villains are even as popular as the hero himself! In his years of fighting, Batman has also trained several sidekicks under the titles of Robin and Batgirl. |

Wonder Woman: If you think that Wonder Woman is just a female copy of Superman, then you are dead-wrong! Wonder Woman was an original member of the Justice League. She was also one of the legendary Amazons, a race of warrior-women out of Greek mythology! Blessed by the Greek gods, Wonder Woman boasts an array of powers that make her formidable warrior while her steadfast personality makes her an ally of goodness, love, and justice everywhere. Wonder Woman's first character appearance was in December 1941 in the 8th issue of All Star Comics. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston, who wanted to create a hero who triumphed using love instead of violence. His wife suggested the hero be a woman and Wonder Woman was born. Over the years, Wonder Woman has fought her fair share of beasts and villains, including gods and legends from Greek mythology. She is one of the most quintessential images of the super heroine, standing for strength, beauty, and dignity. |

Green Lantern: The Green Lantern is not one hero, but many. Several heroes have worn the Green Ring of Power and fought as the Green Lantern on Earth, and the Green Lantern is always a part of a larger group - the Green Lantern Corp. However, back in 1940, the Green Lantern was created as a part of the superhero craze started by Superman. His name was Alan Scott, and he fought the criminals of New York with the aid of his magic ring. The series was canceled in 1949, but revived almost ten years later with a new Green Lantern - Hal Jordan. He was the first in the line of modern-day Green Lanterns, and the forerunner of others who carried the title. Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner continued in Hal's footsteps. Wielding rings that make their will a reality, these warriors fight against evil alongside aliens of all different races in the Lantern Corps, and several of the most noted heroes that defend the planet Earth. Green is not the only color of Lantern out there, though, and the other colors of the spectrum have been encountered too. For example, the black rings of power were a key element in the memorable comic plot line known as Blackest Night. |

The Flash: Batman is not the only hero to have some cool nicknames! The Flash is also known as the Scarlet Speedster and the Crimson Comet; both nicknames hint at the nature of his power - incredible speed. Indeed, every incarnation of The Flash has possessed inhuman speed, and many have tapped into the Speedforce, a mysterious energy which allows the superhero to achieve feats that are truly superhuman. Since the first publication of The Flash in January of 1940, four characters have carried the title: Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen. Each version of The Flash has fought their share of fearsome villains, including the Rogues, a group of dastardly villains known for their teamwork when they try to overcome The Flash. Each of the four Flashes has also been an important member of one of the many superhero groups in the DC Universe, leading to the appearance of the Flash in several mediums, including cartoons, cross-over comics, television shows, and more! |
