27 S'mores Treats Perfect For National S'mores Day

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 04:00 AM PDT

Did you know today is National S'mores Day? Here at Neatorama, this is a real holiday with a lot of clout -which means celebrating the day to its fullest. Sure, fair weather s'mores fans will probably make a basic s'more and reflect on campfire memories from their youth, but if you really love the sweet treats, then you know there's a lot more you can do with graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallow than making a nice warm sandwich. In fact, we've compiled enough recipes for you to eat s'mores all day -including for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Breakfast:

Pancakes

By working some marshmallow and chocolate chips into your pancakes as they cook and then covering them with marshmallow, graham cracker crumbs and chocolate chips, Bombshell Bling made a reasonably healthy breakfast loaded with all the makings of heaven. To really maximize your s'moreness, you could also try spreading Nutella and then marshmallow fluff on top of the pancakes before quickly popping them under the broiler for that toasty marshmallow magic.

Crepes

For a more traditional French take on s'more pancakes, Bombshell Bling suggests trying your hand at s'mores crepes. These are, just as you may expect, simply crepes loaded with marshmallow fluff, chocolate syrup and graham cracker crumbs, but when it comes to s'mores, simplicity is often simply amazing. Again, if you really want to up your s'mores game though, try making your crepes with graham flour.

Waffle Sliders

For those who prefer the delicious nooks and crannies of a waffle over those flat old pancakes, Mom on Time Out suggests making s'mores out of Eggo minis dipped in chocolate. Granted, you lose the graham flavor, but that delicious, buttery waffle taste more than makes up for it.

French Toast

Here's another twist on a breakfast classic -French toast stuffed with toasted marshmallow and chocolate and crusted in crushed graham cracker. BS in the Kitchen even went so far as to only use the roasted marshmallow skins since the rest of the mallow would be too much gooeyness.

Cinnamon Rolls

What's better than a cinnamon roll? How about one loaded with chocolate and covered in toasted marshmallows? This recipe by Steph's Bite By Bite sounds utterly amazing, but the pictures are even more mouth watering.

S'moreception

Yes, most of the s'mores listed here have pretty straightforward names, but what else do you call a s'more made with s'more Pop Tarts in place of graham crackers? Dude Foods understands that for maximum s'moreness, you have to think outside the box.

Donuts

S'mores and donuts were pretty much made to be together, and a quick search on Google reveals plenty of people have combined the two in a variety of manners. If you really want to capture the trifecta of chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker though, I recommend this recipe by Half Baked Harvest, which incorporates homemade graham cracker donuts and homemade beer marshmallows.

Lunch:

Quesadillas

A quesadilla maker is a fun tool to have, but sometimes you get tired of cheese. For those times, Dude Foods suggests melting chocolate and marshmallows, crushing graham crackers before putting them between your tortillas. Of course, even then the cooking process makes quite a mess.

Tacos

Ask most s'more fanatics and they'll tell you that a real s'more needs to be cooked over a campfire. Unfortunately, most recipes inspired by the dessert can't be cooked that way. These tacos by camarochix72 though are actually designed to be grilled and though they use a barbecue, you could easily adapt the recipe for campfire cooking.

Burrito

It is pretty easy to add a tortilla to your s'more, but this s'morrito takes the treat to a whole new level by adding peanut butter, jelly and bacon. The Vulgar Chef doesn't include a recipe with this photo, but if you know how to make a burrito and a s'more, you probably shouldn't need any extra help.

Chicken Wings

Don't feel like Mexican? Well how about red-blooded American? These s'mores chicken wings by Dude Foods were created by smothering marshmallow cream all over grilled chicken wings and then rolling the sticky wings in graham crackers. Lastly, the wings are drizzled with melted Hershey's bars.

Burger

(Video Link)

If you were reading this wondering when Epic Meal Time would get involved with the s'morgasm of recipes here, well, now's the time. Their bacon s'more burgers feature patties stuffed with marshmallow cream and chocolate, topped with cherry-coke-infused beef bacon, Nutella and giant marshmallows, all on a giant graham cracker bun. The burgers are even served up with a side of red velvet onion rings for an extra serving of dessunch.

Apple Salad

Looking for something a little lighter? Well, I don't know why you're looking for it in an article about s'mores, but this s'mores apple salad by Something Swanky is the closest thing you'll get to health food here. Aside from apples, this salad also contains chocolate chips, pudding, Cool Whip, mini marshmallows and graham cracker crumbles.

Dinner:

Lasagna

Many of these recipes incorporate ingredients from the inspiration along with s'more ingredients. That is not the case when it comes to Beyond Frosting's s'mores lasagna. This calorie-laden wonder features chocolate, graham crackers, chocolate pudding, marshmallow fluff and chocolate whipped cream layered together like the famous Italian casserole.

Pizza

There are infinite ways to make pizza and one of those happens to be with a graham cracker crust covered with marshmallow cream, chocolate, marshmallows and crushed graham crackers. She Knows has the recipe to make this kid-friendly recipe at home.

Spaghetti

One of the more surprising ways you can serve up some s'mores involves a little bit of molecular gastronomy magic.  Dude Foods used agar powder, a syringe and tubes to turn chocolate and marshmallows into strands of pasta. He served it all up with crumbled graham crackers, but if you really want to sell the spaghetti element, you could always make graham meatballs and a spaghetti sauce from red velvet cake batter.

Nachos

I have a handful of foods that I couldn't go without. This Lil' Piglet's campfire apple s'more nachos recipe combines two of them  -nachos and s'mores. Still, if I made these myself I'd have to add in one more nachos element by incorporating some cheese in the mix, probably brie.

Sushi

Granted, Mom On Time Out calls these s'mores Rice Krispies treats pinwheels, one look at both the picture and the process can convince you that it's actually s'more sushi.

Drinks:

Milk Shake

Need to wash down your s'mores? Why not try a s'more? This s'more milkshake from Sprinkle Some Sugar blends chocolate ice cream, marshmallows and milk and is served up with a chocolate drizzle and crumbled graham cracker bits.

Martini

For a more adult s'more beverage, Food Network suggests making a cinnamon-vanilla vodka blend and then combining it with Drambuie, chocolate liquor, chocolate bitters. Scoop a honey and heavy cream blend on the top and serve the whole thing up in a glass rimmed with marshmallow fluff dipped in graham crackers and garnished with a toasted marshmallow.

Jell-o Shots

If you want to combine two of your childhood favorites, consider making some s'mores Jell-o shots served up in a hallowed marshmallow. That's So Michelle can tell you how, but don't plan on getting more than a sugar buzz on these shots alone considering how little booze is in each mallow.

Desserts:

Fire Pit Cake

If you're gonna make a s'mores cake, you might as well pay tribute to the birthplace of the s'more, the classic campfire, the same way Table Spoon did. Of course, the delicious treat should still have all the makings of a real s'more, and this brownie cake has a graham cracker and toasted marshmallow crust and a chocolate ganache and marshmallow filling.

Wedding Cake

Of course, if you really, really love s'mores, maybe you should consider incorporating the treat into your wedding ceremony. This impressive cake, made by Wanna Cupcake, doesn't just have s'more decorations. The inside features chocolate and graham cakes topped with marshmallow buttercream.

Turnovers

Puff pastry is one of those things that can only make things better, just like peanut butter, so baking a s'more inside a turnover and adding a little peanut butter for good measure could only be amazing. Need proof? Just look at this picture from Recipe Girl.

Ice Cream

It would be simple enough to go to Cold Stone and order chocolate ice cream with some marshmallows and graham crackers mixed in. But Food 52's s'more ice cream brings the treat to a whole new level of greatness by adding chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers to a burnt marshmallow custard ice cream.

Strawberries

Chocolate-covered strawberries are great, but if you can't get enough s'mores, you can always try enjoying the two together at last. Bombshell Bling has the instructions, but it basically comes down to dipping strawberries into marshmallow fluff and then roasting the mallow topping before dipping the berries into melted chocolate and then graham cracker crumbs.

Pet Treats:

You don't want to celebrate National S'mores Day without man's best friend, do you? Of course not! But you can't give Fido any of your s'more treats since chocolate is bad for puppies. Instead, make your pooch these tasty puppy dog s'mores with pooch-friendly carob thanks to Living Better Together.

In case you were wondering, yes, writing this article did desperately make me crave s'mores so I made a Nutella, Eggo, marshmallow fluff and graham cracker crumbs breakfast while I was writing.

Zoo Wants to Train Sheepdogs to Protect Wild Bandicoots

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 02:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Beate Sexton)

Pictured above is a maremma sheepdog with a stuffed bandicoot toy. Below is a real bandicoot photographed by Zoos Victoria in Australia. Wild bandicoots are greatly endangered due to attacks by foxes and feral cats. The zoo staff would like to enlarge the bandicoot population by training maremmas to live near bandicoot dens and protect them from predators.

Wildlife conservationists have already successfully used maremmas to protect an endangered penguin population. Zoos Victoria thinks that the same approach would be successful with these small marsupials. Oliver Milman writes for The Guardian:

The dogs, which like to work in pairs, will be sent to three different test sites in Victoria to see if they can effectively protect bandicoots without the need for fences. The spare Maremma puppy will be used by Zoos Victoria as a fundraising ambassador.

Maremma dogs are considered ideal for conservation work because they can bond to an array of other creatures while also viewing feral pests as mortal enemies. The dogs have formed friendships with sheep, goats, chickens and gannets in the past. In controlled experiments, sheep that heard dingo calls instinctively ran behind the dogs for protection.

1953 See-through Bus

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Is this vehicle weird, or what? It was designed by French architect Felix Aublet in 1953 for the French yarn and clothing company SOFIL.

Part of the long, illustrious tradition of eye-catching promotional vehicles (of which the most outrageous were built in France for such epic sport events as Tour De France), this marvel of engineering had bent acrylic and glass panels, which would light up in different colors at night - promoting the rainbow colors of famous SOFIL array of yarns - plus it would broadcast music by Radio Luxembourg and other stations!

But this transparent bus was far from the only outrageous vehicle SOFIL used to promote their wares. And Felix Aublet designed fantastic futuristic vehicles for other companies, too, which resembled anything from stained-glass chapels to spaceships! See a selection of these vehicles at Dark Roasted Blend.

They remind me a little of Steven Johnson’s fantastically odd designs.

These Stag Beetles Are Actually Loaves of Bread

Don't bite into that beetle just yet! I know that's your immediate response to seeing a giant stag beetle. Who wouldn't start salivating over such a treat? But what you're looking at are actually breads baked and colored to resemble the cute little bugs.

Twitter user @tono_donoyukko saw these on sale at a bakery in Japan. They're priced at about $2.74 USD each, which is much more expensive than an ordinary stag beetle.

What You Can Learn From Watching Investigation Discovery For 24 Hours

Posted: 09 Aug 2014 09:00 PM PDT

Watching true crime TV shows can teach you a thing or two about psychological profiling, forensic science and the horrific things people do to each other, but watch too much murder themed TV and you’re liable to become a bit paranoid.

Redditor fonetik conducted his own investigation into the effects of watching nothing but Investigation Discovery and other cop/murder shows for 24 hours and came up with over forty insightful, and sometimes frightening, "nuggets of information" including:

8. If you believe FBI profilers, I know about 30 serial killers.

3. If you took out an insurance policy on someone, and then they suddenly die horrifically a week later, you probably won’t get that money… and you’re going to prison.

15. My cell phone can take 6 hours of 720P video. The cameras in convenience stores take 4 pictures a minute and might as well be drawn with crayons. And they throw away the tapes nightly.

34. No one in nice neighborhoods hears or reports gunshots. Ever.

10. Detroit isn’t scary. Memphis is scary.

The Most Committed McDonald's Customer Ever Rides a Gurney to the Drive-Through Window

Posted: 09 Aug 2014 07:00 PM PDT

When you need a McRib fix, you've got to head to a McDonald's restaurant right away. Sure, you're hospitalized. But you can't let a minor inconvenience like that distract you from what's important. If necessary, do what this man did: strap yourself to a motorized gurney and pilot it to the McDonald's. A 22 Words reader describes the scene:

My wife and I decided to visit Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA, on our vacation. When we got to the top of the offramp, we saw this man, completely strapped to a motorized gurney, going down the sidewalk. He went to the first intersection, crossed the street to McDonalds, and ordered his food through the drive-thru window. I would love to know his story, but whatever it is, he must LOVE McDonalds!

Picard Facepalm Cookies

Jenn of JustJenn Recipies has just the cookie for it. She used a facepalming Picard cookie cutter to make sugar cookies. Then she painted the Captain's uniform with black and red food gel dye.

Nintendo Character Guide From The 90s Reveals Yoshi's Real Name

Posted: 09 Aug 2014 02:00 PM PDT

It seems rather strange that so many mysteries still exist in the world of Nintendo, considering each of their characters/series have had multiple sequels come out across all platforms, but as it turns out some of these secrets were revealed in Nintendo character guide released in 1993.

Lingering questions like Yoshi’s real name, Princess Peach’s magic power, and Mario’s personality profile were revealed in a guide that was "distributed to licensors so they’d better understand the characters before using their image", facts kindly shared via Twitter by Blake Harris, author of Console Wars.

Blake's insightful discovery might challenge the way you've thought about your favorite Nintendo characters all these years, but maybe knowing the truth will make you feel even closer to these beloved video game stars. What's not to love about a dinosaur named T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas?

This Outrageous Bloody Mary Includes a Whole Chicken

Forty-five years ago, humanity reached beyond the barrier of this world and touched the surface of another celestial body. And it was Americans who accomplished this unprecedented feat.

Some people say that America can no longer do great things. But they are wrong. When it comes to building Bloody Marys, Americans are not only constructing alcoholic marvels, but doing so at astunning pace.

Sobelman's, a bar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has pushed the envelope of human achievement by inventing the Chicken Fried Bloody Beast. It contains "cheese, sausage, pickles, olives, onions, mushrooms, asparagus, scallions, shrimp, lemon, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, celery," and a whole fried chicken.

Employees Who Have Clearly Given Up On Their Jobs

Posted: 09 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT

(Image Via acid cow)

Working a nine-to-five job can really get you down, and it’s not uncommon for overworked and bored employees to check out midway through a work week, because in their minds it’s already the weekend.

These employees can’t help but show their apathy for the job, and an apathetic employee is a sloppy employee.

(Image Via lolzbook)

It's surprising how many workers completely give up on trying to do their job right, yet can't help but share their lack of caring with the world:

(Image Via gosmellthecoffee)

They might as well come in to work with a shirt that reads "Take this job and shove it!", or just stay at home instead of coming in to work their shifts, but it seems money will make even the most apathetic employee pretend to give a crap about their job:

Tick Bite Can Trigger Allergy to Red Meat

Posted: 09 Aug 2014 07:00 AM PDT

The Lone Star tick is called that because it was found in Texas -and throughout the South. This insect’s bite can cause a strange reaction: an allergic reaction to red meat, such as beef, pork, venison, or rabbit. And it’s spreading- Lone Star ticks have been found all the way up the eastern seaboard of the U.S. One allergist on Long Island has seen almost 200 cases of reactions to meat caused by the tick.

The bugs harbor a sugar that humans don't have, called alpha-gal. The sugar is also found in red meat — beef, pork, venison, rabbit — and some dairy products. It's usually fine when people encounter it through food that gets digested.

But a tick bite triggers an immune system response, and in that high-alert state, the body perceives the sugar the tick transmitted to the victim's bloodstream and skin as a foreign substance, and makes antibodies to it. That sets the stage for an allergic reaction the next time the person eats red meat and encounters the sugar.

It’s not yet clear whether the meat allergy triggered by the tick is permanent. Those who have suffered a reaction are wary of tempting fate. Read more about the Lone Star tick at NBC. -via Digg
