| Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Looked a Lot Like Screech Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:00 AM PDT
Webcomic artist Zach Weinersmith noticed the uncanny resemblance. Marcus Aurelius, the Emperor of Rome from 161-180 A.D., had a similar face and hairstyle of Screech Powers, a character on Saved by the Bell. Perhaps the Sage of Bayside High School will also be remembered as a philosopher king.
| Posted: 11 Aug 2014 03:00 AM PDT The 2014 World Yo-Yo Contest was recently held in Prague, Czech Republic, where the best yo-yo artists showed off their best tricks. Californian pro Gentry Stein of the YoYoFactory team was named the best in the contest’s 1A division.e was the U.S. champion in 2013, and now, the entire world! I won’t show this video to my kids -they think I’m an expert because I can get a yoyo to return to my hand. That’s all I can do. Warning: I found the music on this video highly annoying. -via Time | ||||||||
| Giant Turtle Sculpture Made Out Of Scrap Metal Posted: 11 Aug 2014 02:00 AM PDT If a tinkerer from the Industrial Age started making automatons shaped like animals for their ultra modern robot zoo they might have built a giant turtle sculpture similar to this epic scrap metal creation by Indonesian artist Ono Gaf. (Images Via Gina Sanderson) However, it would have been utterly lacking in the style and soul put into the work by Ono, the animal spirit that makes Gaf’s massive sculpture seem so lively. Ono Gaf is a nickname used by Indonesian artist Sumarsono, and if you think his turtle sculpture is interesting wait until you read about the guy behind the art, the Malang man of steel. -Via Colossal | ||||||||
| Penguin Visits Hotel, Won't Leave Posted: 11 Aug 2014 01:00 AM PDT Although this avicular gentleman was impeccably dressed in a tuxedo, he did not have a reservation. Perhaps he hoped to bluff his way into a room at the Boulders Beach Lodge & Restaurant on the South African coast. The staff politely but firmly shooed him out. Have better luck at the next hotel over, Mr. Penguin. | ||||||||
| 39 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Doctor Who Posted: 11 Aug 2014 12:00 AM PDT A TV show that’s had 800 episodes over a 50-year period produces a lot of trivia, so any list you see probably has some tidbits you’ve never read before. A list of Doctor Who trivia at Buzzfeed tells us, among other things, how inbred the production is.
My personal favorite is the story of the fourth Doctor’s knitted scarf. I’m sure you’ll find something that will surprise you among the 39 things.

| Criminals Whose Stupid Mistakes Got Them Caught Posted: 10 Aug 2014 11:00 PM PDT Bank employees' terror turned to perplexity when, in the summer of 1995, the behavior of the man robbing their Berlin bank appeared increasingly bizarre. When asked if he wanted a bag, the robber, Klaus Schmidt, shouted "You're damn right it's a real gun!" When Schmidt consistently failed to recognize audible cues, it became apparent to the bank employees that he was deaf. One employee tripped an alarm that was extremely loud, which Schmidt failed to notice. He continued about his business of committing the robbery, occasionally shouting threats such as "I am a trained killer!" Eventually the police showed up and arrested Schmidt. Amazingly, after the failed robbery, Schmidt filed a lawsuit against the bank for taking advantage of his disability. | ||||||||
| The Challenges of Being a LEGO Superhero Posted: 10 Aug 2014 10:00 PM PDT Audiences loved the LEGO Batman movie and gamers have enjoyed the LEGO DC superheroes games. They're fresh takes on classic heroes that you can recreate yourself with your own LEGO collections. But, as a practical matter, being a LEGO superhero would be awful, as the webcomic Pictures in Boxes demonstrates. The only good thing about being a minifig hero is that your foes are equally disadvantaged. | ||||||||

| Scooby-Doo Baddies Replaced With Famous Movie Slashers Posted: 10 Aug 2014 08:00 PM PDT Those creeps and ghouls who chased Scooby-Doo and the gang around weren’t all that scary, because the adventures had to stay kid friendly, but what if some of horror’s most infamous slashers had co-starred in those Scooby Doo mysteries? Scenes from the show might have looked an awful lot like these ghoulishly great artworks by illustrator Travis Falligrant, aka IB Trav, and the little viewers at home would've had nightmares for the rest of their lives. Trav clearly wasn't impressed by the original Scooby-Doo baddies, so he raised the stakes by adding actual slashers like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees to the classic cartoon mystery, careful to keep that signature Hanna-Barbera style in each character design. It's a good thing real horror movie slashers weren't included in the original show, or the gang probably wouldn't have made it past the first season! -Via Bloody Disgusting | ||||||||
| Little Boy Dominates the Dance Floor at a Wedding Posted: 10 Aug 2014 07:00 PM PDT This little boy wows the crowd at a wedding by performing a lezginka, a dance style common to the people of the Caucasus Mountains. | Posted: 10 Aug 2014 05:00 PM PDT Redditor Thegrizzlybearzombie spotted Charlie Brown and his dog Snoopy on the streets in Traverse City, Michigan. If you look closely, you’ll see that Snoopy has a GoPro camera attached to his Sopwith Camel. Be on the lookout for these two soon in a video. I bet they have their soundtrack already picked out. | ||||||||
| Crazy Inventor Colin Furze Makes Balloons Out Of Sheet Metal Posted: 10 Aug 2014 04:00 PM PDT Colin Furze is a very crafty man with some serious skills in the workshop and a vivid imagination when it comes to creating new ways to work with metal. He has crafted some amazingly crazy pieces of gear over the years, like the pneumatic version of Wolverine’s claws or the world's fastest stroller, but this time around he's doing something a little less crazy- inflating welded sheet metal like a balloon: Colin uses a process known as HydroForming to "inflate" the sheet metal, spraying a high pressure water jet into the welded pocket between the sheets of metal, thereby causing it to expand into a balloon shape. He assures us this is totally safe as long as there isn't any air in there, but something tells me Colin inadvertently created a fun new way to launch shrapnel... -Via Sploid | ||||||||
| 13 Scientific Terms You Might Be Using Wrong Posted: 10 Aug 2014 03:00 PM PDT If you read about science on the internet, you’ve probably run into the embarrassing misuse of the words “poisonous” and “venomous.” And you might want to tear your hair out when someone says “evolution is just a theory.” Those are some of the science terms that laymen often use incorrectly. “Microbe” is another -one that I use a lot, because its a useful synonym, especially when you aren’t sure how to classify those little critters. Here’s one I didn’t know: "hominins."
There are 13 such terms we should all learn to use as scientists do, in a list at mental_floss. There are also videos further explaining some of the terms.
| Ten Amazing Technologies Nearing Fruition Posted: 10 Aug 2014 02:00 PM PDT From Hybrid Librarian is this video that details ten emerging technologies that aren't long from becoming realities in some form. How do you think things would change with these technological advances in place? There always seem to be drawbacks as well as positive outcomes. Via Science Dump. | ||||||||

| The Jellyfish House Has a Transparent Rooftop Pool Posted: 10 Aug 2014 01:00 PM PDT This is the Jellyfish House, a home in Marbella, Spain designed by Weil Arets Architects. The owners wanted to have a view of the nearby Mediterranean Sea, which is blocked on the ground floor by hills. The architects responded by building the pool on the roof of the four story house. Residents and guests who are on the floor below the pool don't have a view of the sea, but they can look straight up the glass ceiling to look at people in the pool. | ||||||||
| How to Use Your Cat to Hack Your Neighbors' Wi-Fi Posted: 10 Aug 2014 12:00 PM PDT
Pictured above is Coco, a cat and a computer hacker. She probably doesn't know about that last part. Gene Bransfield, a computer security expert, outfitted her with a collar that mapped Wi-Fi networks as she roamed her neighborhood. Andy Greenberg of Wired describes how it works:
This is similar to the practice of "wardriving"--driving around in a car, searching for unprotected Wi-Fi networks. Coco does the same thing on four feet with the help of Bransfield's "WarKitteh" collar, which cost him just $100 to build. He will give a presentation about it at DefCon, a convention about computer hacking and security. The purpose of his presentation, which he entitled "How to Weaponize Your Pets," is to demonstrate how vulnerable Wi-Fi networks are:

| Posted: 10 Aug 2014 11:00 AM PDT Where's the nearest bus stop? If you're new in a city and don't know how the local public transportation system is organized, that can be unclear. But not if you live in this neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Four artists from Spain designed a bus stop that spells it out for you. Emilio Alarcón, Alberto Alarcón, Ciro Márquez, and Eva Salmerón form the art collective mmmm… (that’s 3 dots). Their wood and steel sculpture entitled BUS provides shelter for people from the sun and the rain, as well as provides a place to sit or lie down. | Posted: 10 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT It wasn’t all that long ago that organ grinders trained monkeys to fetch offerings from onlookers while the busker played his music. Monkeys aren’t the only animals trained to collect money! In China, these birds are happy to take your coins and deposit them in the bank -and their owners doesn’t even have to be there! the novelty of birds taking money is enough to get people to search through their pockets for change. -via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| The Colorful History Of Baseball Uniforms Posted: 10 Aug 2014 09:00 AM PDT The peanuts and cracker jacks are back in their seats, watching the new baseball season play out inning by inning like every previous season, but there’s one thing that regularly changes in the world of major league baseball- the uniforms. Teams are constantly updating their look, changing up their color palette and refining their logo to stay current, and the history of baseball is forever commemorated by the uniforms of the past. This colorful chart was created by Pop Chart Lab, containing colorful illustrations of baseball uniforms both home and away from the sport’s past, with examples dating back to the late 1800s, and you can see a full sized version of the chart here -Via Laughing Squid | ||||||||
| Quicksand and Liquefaction Explained Posted: 10 Aug 2014 08:00 AM PDT Port Royal, a city in southeastern Jamaica, was founded in 1518. It was once an important location that served as a hub of Caribbean shipping and commerce. In 1692, Port Royal sustained devastating damage after an earthquake, which caused much of the city to fall into the sea. This video on quicksand and liquefaction explains the geologic circumstances that cause disasters such as Port Royal. Via Geeks are Sexy. | ||||||||
| Posted: 10 Aug 2014 07:00 AM PDT In Australia, emus are a protected species, but they are not endangered. For a while they lost that protected status, when they threatened the grain farms of World War I veterans in Western Australia. The big birds can destroy a crop in no time, and 20,000 of them were quite a threat. In November of 1932, the military was called up to take action against the emus. Author Murray Johnson tells us how that mission went.
Yes, the army was no match for the flocks of flightless birds. But they pressed on, with another campaign later that month. Read about the emu’s tactical strategy and the outcome of the Great Emu War at Scientific American. -via Not Exactly Rocket Science
| Why Do Bats Transmit So Many Diseases? Posted: 10 Aug 2014 06:00 AM PDT Bats are found in the folklore of about every region on Earth. People seem to either think they're cute or be completely repulsed by them. Their nocturnal habits, unusual appearance, reputation of being diseased and association in legend with vampires and bloodsucking doesn't help their fear factor. Are bats getting a bad rap? Minute Earth takes on the topic of bats, particularly their being carriers of disease, in this video. Via Science Dump |
