The situation in Iraq is spiraling out of control. As a parent it is heartbreaking to hear stories of fathers fleeing for their lives with terrified daughters in their arms. Images on the news of children exhausted and traumatized with tears streaming down their young faces are haunting. The stories and images of this conflict are devastating.
The violent attacks in Iraq have created new waves of displacement– causing an emergency call for even more resources in the area. Terrified, homeless and in need of food and water, families are fleeing with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They have no other choice, if they want to survive.
UNHCR is on the ground, responding to new arrivals, including the tens of thousands from the Sinjar mountain area. Rapid response efforts are underway, including the distribution of critical relief items like blankets, clean drinking water, hygiene kits, sleeping mats and other basic survival items.
With conflicts raging in both Syria and Iraq, the pressure is growing on the region's already limited resources.
We cannot thank you enough for your support of UNHCR's work to protect and save the world's most vulnerable people during emergency situations. Now is one of those moments we need your support more than ever.
