About 5,000 people, some of them dressed in purple wigs or stars-and-stripes hats, have lined up outside Rumsey Playfield in New York's Central Park in the wee hours of what will turn out to be a beautiful June morning. The attraction? A chance to watch Jennifer Lopez debut songs from her latest album on the nation's most-watched morning show, ABC's "Good Morning America."

First City Fest Trades on Monterey Pop's Legacy


By Matthew Kivel In summer 1967, the sleepy town of Monterey, Calif., roared to life — hosting the first, and only, Monterey Pop Festival at its county fairgrounds. Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire, Janis Joplin redefined the blues and Otis Redding staged a soul revue for the ages. It was the first widely publicized festival of its kind, in which rock and pop took center stage. Monterey Pop laid the groundwork for what would become an American cultural tradition — and lucrative money-making institution — the summer music festival.

Participants included Guild of Music Supervisors president Maureen Crowe ("Chicago," "The Bodyguard"); Anton Monsted, senior VP of Fox Music, who helped craft Baz Luhrmann's more Byzantine soundtracks ("The Great Gatsby," "Moulin Rouge"); TV top gun Thomas Golubic ("Breaking Bad," "Walking Dead"), Tracy McKnight ("Draft Day," "The Messenger"), who served as VP of film music at Lionsgate when it was cornering the market on young adult fiction; and Frankie Pine, who alternates between features ("Magic Mike," "Kinsey") and television ("The Newsroom," "Nashville").
