Woman Narrowly Avoids Paying $38 Billion for 2 Airline Tickets Posted: 27 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT Marion Sessions of Derbyshire, UK, and her husband wanted to visit the seaside Portuguese town of Faro for a relaxing weekend. She tried to purchase two tickets online, so she did a Google search for cheap aline tickets. That took her to eDreams, an online third-party ticket seller with a shady reputation. Sessions went through the steps of buying the tickets and was about to confirm her purchase when she noticed the price. That's always a good thing to check before making any sort of purchase. But it was especially helpful to Sessions because the price was £23,659,382,125.95. That's about $38,435,849,190.56 USD. Sessions decided that the price was a bit too much, so she declined to complete the transaction. Sky News reports:

Various Types Of Hangovers Illustrated By Crap Taxidermy Posted: 27 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT Hangovers are extremely personal affairs, and everyone has their own brand of bad day after they’ve had too much to drink the night before. Headaches, nausea and vomiting are pretty standard parts of the average hangover, but some people get the shakes, or a fever, flu like symptoms or memory loss, all things that make you feel like a husk. So what better way can there possibly be to illustrate that husky hangover feeling than with crappy taxidermy?! The look on their faces says it all- they look as sad as you feel after a long night of Jaeger bombs and frosty pints! Check out the rest of the stuffed critters who totally know that hangover feel here (Contains NSFW language)

Posted: 27 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT German artist Matthieu Bourel finds old images of well known and beloved faces such as Gregory Peck and Yul Brenner and transforms them into surreal art pieces. Bourel says, “I like to evoke a fake history or inspire nostalgia for a period in time that never truly existed. The obsession of collecting disparate images from books, old magazines and other found material becomes as much a part of the emerging image as the mark-making... A piece often becomes about the search and desire to combine those emergent narrative symbols that seem charged with a familiar yet distant emotion.” Bourel lists famed surrealist painter René Magritte as one of his influences; I think hints of Magritte's imagery abound here. Music Video Reveals A Day In The Life Of A Black Metal Teenager Posted: 27 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT Being a teenager is hard enough, but when you choose to live musically and fashionably on the dark side of life your teen years can feel like a total nightmare. This teen angst is multiplied when you decide to wear spikes and chains as accessories, or choose to be part of a subculture where you're encouraged to paint your face. This semi-factual sorta documentary style music video was created by Jogger way back in 2009, revealing the hard life of a suburban black metal kid. The song sounds more Sega Master System than Satyricon, but the visuals are pure METAL!!! -Via Dangerous Minds

Posted: 27 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT Batfans are going to love this! The Piano Guys perform a medley of Batman themes, in chronological order, spanning 50 years. They also have some great visual elements, with different versions of the Batmobile and film sets serving as their backdrop (or is it batdrop?). Don’t be discouraged by the length of the video; the song is only four minutes long. The rest is an ad for their new album. -via Viral Viral Videos
Colon, Michigan - The Magic Capital Of The World Posted: 27 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT If you’re looking for a town that's named after a part of the body, and happens to be a haven for magicians, then you’re in luck- the town of your dreams is called Colon, Michigan. Colon is one strange place- it's named after a punctuation mark, measures less than two square miles, and the magicians who aren't yet buried in the local graveyard rub elbows with the town's Amish population on a daily basis. Colon became a magician's mecca when Harry Blackstone Sr. moved there back in 1926, and when Blackstone and Percy Abbott created the Abbott Magic Company, manufacturers of fine magic tricks, the town became irreversibly tied to the magical arts. Each year the town plays host to magicians from all over the world during Abbott's Magic Get Together, an event that was first held way back in 1934 and is still popular with the magic crowd to this day. The Verge put together an interesting feature about "The Magic Capital Of The World", peeling back the veil of secrecy to reveal everyday life in a town full of magicians. -Via Laughing Squid
Restaurant Offers 25% Discount for 1-Star Yelp Reviews and the Results Are Hilarious Posted: 27 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Botto Bistro is an Italian restaurant in Richmond, California. If you use the review website Yelp to preview restaurants before eating, then you probably won't visit it. Its average rating is only 1 star out of 5. But that's exactly what the owner, David Cerretini, wants. Cerretini explains to Adweek that his plan is a response to what he sees as blackmail by Yelp:
In his site's delightfully sassy FAQ section, Cerretini explains that he's trying to negate the power of Yelp over businesses. So far, his plan appears to be working. -via That's Nerdalicous!
Pride: Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners Posted: 27 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT In 1984-85, the National Union of Mineworkers led a labor strike as a protest against the government shutting down coal mines. The Thatcher government sent in police to break up the picket lines, and refused emergency welfare payments to dependents of those on strike. The strikers found an unlikely ally in Britain’s gay and lesbian population, which banded together to raise money for the strikers, to the tune of thousands of pounds. And that’s the subject of the new movie Pride, which is in limited released in the U.S. Despite the serious and sometimes violent subject matter, the film is a comedy, and has excellent reviews.

Game Of Thrones Intro Reimagined As An Old Man Eating Soup Posted: 27 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT The Game Of Thrones title sequence isn’t the most exciting intro on television, although it does sport a pretty intense soundtrack, so when fans want to make their own version of the intro they can really go either way. YouTuber Lexavian decided to go the low action way with their reimagined intro, to compensate for the abundance of exciting moments in the show. Behold the epic excitement of an old man eating a bowl of soup! Chances are you'll hear the Game of Thrones theme song every time you heat up a can of Progresso (Red) Wedding Soup from here on out... -Via Clickhole
Belgian City Will Build an Underground Beer Pipeline Posted: 27 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT
You can transport beer by hand, horse cart, or truck. Or, even better, in your belly. But these are not efficient means of transporting large quantities of beer. This has become a problem for the De Halve Maan brewery in Bruges, Belgium. For five hundred years, it has produced beer at its brewery in the center of town. It uses a fleet of trucks to move its beer 3 miles to a distribution facility. That's a problem because the trucks clog up traffic on the city's cobblestone streets. In response, De Halve Maan has acquired permission to build a 1.8-mile underground pipeline that will move the beer quickly and efficiently. When complete, the plastic pipeline will move about 1,585 gallons of beer per hour. -via Marginal Revolution

When the xenos took over their first human ship they found a video on board that showed how humans give birth, and to a species that replicates using facehuggers this looked like a total nightmare! The men pictured above are researchers at Karolinska Institutet, a medical school in Sweden. For a decade, they've been locked in a fierce competition with each other. Their goal is to quote the singer Bob Dylan more times than any other in their published scientific articles.
It all began 17 years ago when researchers Jon Lundberg and Eddie Weitzberg published an article entitled "Nitric Oxide and Inflammation: The Answer Is Blowing in the Wind." The last phrase is from one of Dylan's most famous songs. A few years later, Jonas Frisén and Konstantinos Meletis published an article called "Blood on the Tracks: A Simple Twist of Fate" -- a double reference to Dylan. The text of the article also included Dylan lines. Then the competition was on at full speed! The researchers determined that whoever published the most number of articles with Dylan quotes before they retired would win lunch at the expense of the others. Why Bob Dylan of all singers? Because he represents something important in medical research:

Posted: 27 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT In the US, you see a bear at the window and you 1. shut the window, 2. make sure your kids are inside, and 3. call authorities. In Russia? Hand feed the bear! This bear sure likes the sweet pastries he’s getting, even though with a mere leap or swipe of the paw, he could be eating a sturdy human. Things are different in Russia. Of course, we can assume the men know this bear, but you have to wonder how that came to be. The real question is, what happens when you run out of cookies? -via Daily Picks and Flicks
Is Destiny One of the Worst Games of the Year? Posted: 26 Sep 2014 11:00 PM PDT Image Via Bungie Let me start this off by saying I am in-between camps right now when it comes to this game. The following thoughts and feelings on Destiny do not represent Neatorama's feelings about the game whatsoever. That disclaimer made, writer Dan Seitz over at Uproxx put together his thoughts on the game right here, and he has some very hefty accusations to lob at Destiny. But the truth is, going from reviews and people I have talked to, he sums up a good portion of how many gamers feel about the game that was to be Bungie's FIRST non-Halo game. One particular thing that seemed to stand out to him: Destiny’s problems come into painfully sharp relief once you hit level 20, which the game has capped as the highest level you can earn through experience points. You can get up to level 30 by collecting gear that has “Light” as an attribute; the more light you have, the higher your level. One problem; the loot system is designed to keep you playing the same missions over and over again on the off-chance you’ll collect a Legendary or Rare engram… which has a strong chance of turning out to be complete and total vendor trash you’ll never use. Though I will need a little more time with the game myself before I can determine my own solid thoughts, it just seems fair to represent all sides of the coin. Whether you agree or not, his piece is very well thought out, and makes some very valid points about a game that could have potentially been a game-changer, but might have just missed that mark.

The Satanic Children's Book of Big Activities Posted: 26 Sep 2014 07:00 PM PDT Image Via TheSatanicTemple First of all, we need to point out, we do not support or condone any one type of religion or another here at Neatorama. What we do is provide the internet with links to the weirdest, funniest, and most interesting stuff we can find on the web. That having been said, have you heard about the Satanic Children's Book of Big Activities? Well, if you live in Florida, rumor is this may be getting distributed to schools, though it is not quite what you may think it is. The Satanic Temple is a political organization that tests the limits of the First Amendment to show how our government and its supporters favor Christianity to the exclusion of other religions. It is not about Satan in so much as it is about showing that if you are going to allow the teaching of certain religions in schools, the same freedoms should be granted for all religions and not just Christianity. Yes, they do that in an unconventional way, yet here we are talking about, which means it is working.
Making Breakfast with the Twins Posted: 26 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT A father demonstrates why it takes so long to make breakfast when you have twin babies. I can imagine it takes much longer to do anything! One baby takes all your time and attention; two will outnumber you, even if you have two stay-at-home parents. The upside is that eventually they will keep each other occupied. The downside is that they will be plotting against you. -via Tastefully Offensive |
