Something exciting is happening at the USO!
We’re thrilled that America’s favorite weatherman, Al Roker, chose the USO for TODAY’s “Shine a Light” initiative. This week Al joined the USO Family and wrapped up his first-ever USO tour, which brought music, laughter, and a little bit of home to our troops in Afghanistan.
Al said it best: “Freedom comes at a cost, and the people who help pay that cost are the servicemen and women of our Armed Forces and their families.” We can never fully repay our heroes, but we can be by their side offering comfort, connection, and hopefully a few laughs.
Al has issued a call to action to USO supporters: Make a donation of $50 or more to the USO before midnight on 10/5, and you’ll be entered to win a chance to Host the Weather with Al Roker on the TODAY Show. Are you up for the challenge?

Having spearheaded the TODAY/USO Comedy Tour, Al Roker took part in a time-honored USO tradition of bringing well-known stars overseas to visit, entertain and uplift troops.
It’s about millions of Americans demonstrating their gratitude – showing our brave men and women that we are sending positive support, even when home and laughter feel farthest away.
Joining Al, on what was one of the USO’s last entertainment tours to Afghanistan, were comedian/former late night talk show host Jay Leno, musician Kevin Eubanks, actor/comedian Craig Robinson and comedian Iliza Shlesinger. Ensuring his visit to the frontlines was a special one - Al broadcasted LIVE from Bagram Airfield on October 1st and will broadcast exclusive behind-the-scene clips of the group’s USO adventure on Tuesday, October 7 on NBC’s TODAY Show.
The USO and Al are asking proud USO supporters like you to chip in now. We need every dollar to carry on the time-honored USO tradition of standing by the side of our soldiers from the moment they enlist to their reintegration into civilian life – providing a home away from home on base, a phone call back to family, a brief respite in transit, or a job training seminar. And we can’t do it without you.
