The Aral Sea Flotilla--The Warships of a Lost Sea Posted: 02 Oct 2014 04:00 AM PDT (Image: NASA) The Aral Sea is--or was--a large body of water in Central Asia. It is divided between the nations of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. While the Soviet Union existed, the Aral Sea was entirely within its borders. Two rivers, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, were the primary sources of water for the Aral Sea. In the 1960s, the Soviets diverted the two rivers in an attempt to irrigate the nearby desert lands and make them arable. The result was an ecological disaster. The Aral Sea gradually shrunk into three small basins connected by narrow channels. According to NASA satellite imagery, one of those basins has now completely evaporated, leaving the Aral Sea with only 10% of its original capacity. In the photo above, you can see an outline showing the approximate shape of the lake in 1960. The fields of blue are all that is left. (Image of Russian Aral Sea warships from The Russians in Central Asia by E. Stanford, 1865) It was not always so. Prior to Soviet activity, the Aral Sea was a thriving lake that was a center for fishing and commerce. It was of such great importance that the Imperial Russian Navy maintained a fleet of warships there starting in 1852. These warships were built in Sweden or elsewhere in Russia, then transported down rivers to the Aral Sea. They were based at the town of Raim, which is now a Kazakh town on a small lake about 30 miles away from the remains of the Aral Sea. By 1880, this flotilla consisted of 6 armed vessels and several unarmed vessels. They provided mercantile security, conducted hydrographic surveys, and supported troops who campaigned in the area in 1868 and 1873. In 1883, the flotilla was disbanded, with some portions transferred to the Russian naval presence on the Amu Darya, a river that flows into the Aral from Afghanistan. During the Russian Civil War (1917-1923), the Soviets briefly maintained a fleet of warships to combat Tsarist and British troops in the area. But with the Red victory, the need for a fleet evaporated. And, later, so did the sea on which it had sailed.
NYC Taxi Driver Pinup Calendar is Back Posted: 02 Oct 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Woman Jumps a Drawbridge in a Microcar Posted: 02 Oct 2014 01:00 AM PDT The drawbridge in the town of Tisno, Croatia was rising. For the rest of us, that means bring your car to a stop and wait for the bridge to lower again. But for this lady, it means drive faster! Security camera footage captured the scene of her driving her Peugot microcar over the bridge at about 50 MPH. She made it to the other side in one piece . . . . . . and then kept driving. She didn't stop. BBC News reports:
The woman later told police that she had been blinded by the sun. -via Tastefully Offensive

The Meaning of Life, As Explained by Third Graders Posted: 01 Oct 2014 10:00 PM PDT I will start this off by saying if you are not familair with "raptivist" (that is what I like to call rappers who are also activists) Prince Ea's YouTube page, you should be. He posts some incredibly inspiring stuff that will foster small changes in how you see your day to day life. The following video perfectly sums that up. It is perfectly named, as it is third graders talking about the menaing of life. The feeling you get as you watch it is this sort of deja vu that you once felt that exact same way. You watch, and find yourself in awe at how much you WERE these kids at one point, and how much that changed. The great thing is, you can walk away with that feeling back inside you and alive again. A little shred of innocence, a way to look at your daily life differently, and it can make all the difference.
15 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About <i>Fast Times at Ridgemont High</i> Posted: 01 Oct 2014 09:00 PM PDT The film Fast Times at Ridgemont High inspired dozens of teen comedies that came after and launched the careers of a whole slew of now-famous actors. Even if it’s been a long time since you’ve seen the movie, you recall how funny it was. Now you can learn some of the trivia behind the 1982 hit. For example:
In addition to Nicolas Cage, you’ll read about Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, and the folks behind the cameras in this trivia list at mental_floss.
International Conference of Tightrope Walkers Convenes in Hammocks Suspended in Midair Posted: 01 Oct 2014 08:00 PM PDT
Which is, of course, the appropriate place to do so. Highlining is the sport of walking a tightrope high over the ground. This year's International Highline Meeting was conducted at Monte Piana in northwestern Italy. Attendees could just stand on the wire. But that gets tiring after a while. Many brought hammocks out on the ropes to relax and enjoy conversation and the scenery. You can see more photos of the fun they had at Design Taxi. -via Visual News

Reporter Covering Missing Child Story Finds Missing Child Posted: 01 Oct 2014 06:00 PM PDT (Photo: Paul Fagan and Cameron Polom) Paul Ezekial Fagan, a 10-year old boy in Tampa, Florida, vanished from his home last Thursday. Police searched the neighborhood on foot and in a helicopter while his frantic parents feared the worst. Local news reporters drove into Paul's neighbhorood to report on the case. Among them was Cameron Polom of the local ABC station. At around 7 AM on Friday, Polom spotted a tired-looking child in some dense vegetation. The Today show describes the scene:
Paul's family was overjoyed to see him back. The boy explained to them that he had left home because he needed some space from his younger brother. -via Huffington Post

Glowing Dog Food Blamed on Sea Bacteria Posted: 01 Oct 2014 05:00 PM PDT
Fiona Wallis of Taranaki, New Zealand noticed that food that she had purchased for Tucker, her dog, glowed. Siouxsie Wiles, a microbiologist in Auckland, determined that there was bioluminescent sea bacteria inside. She couldn't determine precisely which kind without DNA analysis, but since the dog food is kept in brine, which an ideal environment for the sea bacteria, it was the most likely culprit. The dog food seller, Jimbo's Pet Food, is investigating the matter. Wiles says that it shouldn't be dangerous, but that cooking the food would kill the bacteria.
Pre-Code Horror Movies - The Early Days Of The Silver Scream Posted: 01 Oct 2014 04:00 PM PDT Horror movies have very simplistic roots, and in the early days of monster cinema a fiend could shake the audience to the core with just a sinister look and an appropriately eerie soundtrack. Nowadays horror movies are so stuck on making us jump out of our seats, or crawl out of our skin with disgust, that it's hard to remember how pure the chills and thrills used to be. The good old days of Bela Lugosi using his vampiric gaze to charm audiences into submission, or Lon Cheney Jr. becoming every kind of creature imaginable, may be gone, but their cinematic legacy lives on. Rediscover the Horror Films Of The Hollywood Pre-Code Era, and show the younger generation of fans what the real face of horror looks like!

Men Try Women's Makeup (and the Results Are Hilarious) Posted: 01 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT As a man, have you ever tried to put on makeup, just to understand what women have to go through every day (if they choose)? While you may think it is some easy process where you just paint your face and get on your way, that is not how putting on makeup works. There is an art for getting the right tones with your skin, and how to apply it so you don't look like a circus clown. But most of us men will never know what that's like, so it is hard to empathize with something we do not understand. Thankfully, Buzzfeed Yellow put together this hilarious video of men trying to put on makeup, and the end result just might help us men get a real appreciation for the artistry it takes for some women to look as angelic as they do. I, myself, have not tried this, but I imagine the end result would be horrifying.

Classic Hollywood’s First Asian-American Star Posted: 01 Oct 2014 08:30 AM PDT Anna Mae Wong grew up in Los Angeles, determined to be a part of the glamorous world of Hollywood. She became the most famous of the very few Chinese actors of the 1920s and ‘30s, navigating an industry that woefully underutilized her talent. Still, she had a groundbreaking career in silent films and talkies in both the U.S. and Europe.
One illustration of this was how fan magazines tried to explain that Wong was all American, and therefore nothing to be afraid or suspicious of, yet they also explained that she was really Chinese, really, because audiences were used to Asian roles being played by white actors in makeup. And the roles Wong got were stereotyped as the exotic victim, villain, or sidekick. There was one role that she was dubbed “too Chinese” for, although the character was, in fact, Chinese. The role went to Helen Hayes. Read about Anna Mae Wong’s life and career at Buzzfeed.

6 Abandoned Asylums That Look Like Something Out Of a Horror Movie Posted: 01 Oct 2014 06:45 AM PDT Every street has that one scary house on it, usually way down at the end. It always seems dark, yet you always feel like there are eyes inside there, peering out at you. In the same breath, almost every town has an abandoned mental hospital or old asylum in it, and just like with that one scary house on your street, these abandoned facilities seem like something you dreamt up your nightmares. Colorless and cold, even something as simple as looking at them fills you with a sense of dread that chills you to the bone. It is like you can feel its haunted presence, even miles away. As much as we would all like to pretend these don't exist, they do, and we might as well make a list of them. File this one under: nightmare fuel. Here are six abandoned asylums that look like something out of a horror movie (and in one or two cases, really is). Danvers State Hospital Image credit: John Phelan You cannot grow up in or around Massachusetts and not know about the Danvers State Hospital. If you are driving into (of all places) Salem, it used to loom on a hill just over the highway, and you could always feel it, looking at you. It was like some great beast that hunkered down on the horizon, warning all people to turn around before it was too late. Famous for many things, including the rumored invention of the pre-frontal lobotomy, Danvers State Hospital was everything we learn to fear about the way old sanitariums were run. Patients were often either abused or ignored, and when word finally did get out how bad it was there, the place was shut down almost immediately. The odd thing was, this also meant it being abandoned fully equipped, which somehow made it all even scarier. I know because I went. Truly unsettling stuff. Remember in the intro I talked about how one or two of these "asylums" WAS the setting for a horror film? Well, this is that place, and the movie is called Session 9 (and it is amazing). Also, there is a level on the Xbox game Painkiller that uses the Danvers State Hospital as a setting. The place "mysteriously" caught fire in 2007, and it was a fire you could see from Boston. A very surreal ending to a very surreal (and terrifying) place. Waverly Hills Sanatorium I have to give a huge shout out to Miss Cellania for writing up a great piece for Mental Floss about this very establishment. Seems this place was not quite sure what it wanted to be. First it was a hospital that took care of people suffering from TB. Then it became a nursing home (because nothing says "we should make this place into a nursing home" like thousands of TB fatalities). After that, they were going to build a giant Jesus statue there (hey, let's overcompensate for the death and evil with a giant Jesus statue). Of course, that fell through. Now it has become one of the most prevalent places for urban explorers and novice ghost hunters alike. A big part of its draw for some is the death tunnel or "body chute". The place the staff would use to bring the (many) dead outside without bringing anymore duress to their patients. A very creepy place with a very creepy history. Heck, this one inspired a horror film or two itself. Image Credit: CLK Hatcher Residing in Connecticut, Norwich State Hospital is one of those places you see and you know you want nothing to do with it. It FEELS cold, imposing, and dangerous. Like all old mental facilities, it was built up high with bricks and wood, and looks like the building itself is ready to lurch to life at any moment. Yet it is another example of a place where its history only makes it seem that much more vile. Rumors of physical abuse (and worse) led to its shutdown, but at its high water mark, it was THE place where all the worst offenders in Connecticut end up. Keep in mind, this meant they were often side-by-side with people who had real mental conditions that needed to be addressed. As you can imagine, things did not go well there. The giant, terrifying looking building is still there to remind people to stay in line, just by presence alone. Trenton State Hospital Imagesource: AsylumProjects As opposed to going with a photo of the outside, as I have with most of these so far, I wanted to show a picture from the inside. You see, the state some of these hospitals were left in is half of what makes them so memorable and scary. Rarely were these places abandoned slowly over time. In most cases, the state would find out these places were doing immoral things and would shut the places down immediately. This often meant, people who needed help pushed out onto the street (which is never a good thing) and these places remaining full of most of the stuff they had when they were open. Like the above "happy chairs" for example. A dusty reminder of what must have been very colorful (and undoubtedly oft disturbing) group therapy sessions. What really makes this New Jersey hospital so scary was the story of the owner, who lost his mind and began having all of his patient's teeth pulled because he believed all mental problems stemmed from some infection in the body. When pulling their teeth showed no results, he began having gall bladders and kidneys pulled and, well, it only got creepier from there. The scariest part is that only certain wings of this hospital have been shut down, but most of it is still operational. Topeka State Hospital Image Credit: Bobbi Studstill This Kansas Hospital is another example of a hospital where the staff seemed more into abusing their patients than doing anything that could help them. One of the more famous examples (and what supposedly lead to its shutdown) was the fact that an outsider came in and saw a man who had been strapped to a gurney so long, his skin had begun to grow around the shackles on his wrist. If you do not find that shocking and appalling, you may need to read it again. Just seeing that building and knowing things like that went on inside sends an electric chill up my spine. Athens Lunatic Asylum Imagesource: Roadtrippers This Ohio hospital is on this list for one reason and one reason only. It is the home of one of the most famous (or again, infamous) situations of patient abuse ever. If you look at the above photo, it says it all. A female patient snuck away into one of the unused wings of the hospital one day when no one was paying attention. She laid down in a sun spot underneath the window in the same way a cat would lay down on a warm spot. Only thing is, she never got up. They found her three weeks later, and the above photo is the permanent stain she left on the cement, that you can still clearly see to this day. Her name was Margaret Schilling, and it is a story that seems straight from a horror movie. If a patient can wander off in your hospital and go missing for three weeks with no one noticing, safe to say there is some neglect going on with the staff. Head counts are pretty important in that line of work. The craziest part that makes it so scary and horror movie-esque is that stain. They have tried washing it, power washing it, and bleaching it. Yet the stain always comes back. Is there a better way to end this list? I think not.
Old Shopping Carts Made into Stylish Chairs Posted: 01 Oct 2014 06:30 AM PDT A well-maintained shopping cart can last a decade before it's worn out and no longer serviceable. But it can still be useful if it's repurposed. Designer Xavier Degueldre remade several into chairs. You can view more photos of them at Design Boom. Degueldre added padded seats to some of the chairs, which is no doubt more comfortable than bare metal. But it can be useful to have uncomfortable chairs, as they can encourage guests to leave more expeditiously.

A Photographic Examination of the Japanese Robotics Industry Posted: 01 Oct 2014 01:00 AM PDT Photographer Luisa Whitton's series What About the Heart? documents her time spent in Japan with scientists working on humanoids, including Hiroshi Ishiguro, who constructed a copy of himself in robotic form. Her series is a contemplation of these exceedingly lifelike yet soulless automatons. Whitton elaborates, "In the photographs, I am trying to subvert the traditional formula of portraiture and allure the audience into a debate on the boundaries that determine the dichotomy of the human/not human. The photographs become documents of objects that sit between scientific tool and horrid simulacrum." Whitton's images (the machine) are presented alongside interviews with the scientists (the man) on topics such as consideration of religious and humanistic aspects alongside their technological progress. The photographer wonders what it means to be human as technology progresses.

Kitten Tests the Boundaries of Older Cat, Finds them Strict Posted: 30 Sep 2014 10:00 PM PDT This adorable kitten tries a stalking maneuver on the adult cat in his household and learns that it won't get him anywhere. In a move that reminds me of my young dog's interaction with my older dog, the kitten recoils after his foiled sneak attack and slips into "roly-poly-you-can't-resist-the-cute-I'm-throwing-down" mode, which also gets him nowhere. As a commenter on Tastefully Offensive said, "Kitten just needs to learn his place, and who's boss is all."
Illustrations That Will Utterly Destroy Your Inner Child Posted: 30 Sep 2014 09:00 PM PDT There are some things you just don’t want to see your childhood heroes, animated and otherwise, doing to themselves or each other. Seeing these beloved childhood icons either acting like adults, or like real animals, fills our inner child with dread, and yet our adult selves can’t seem to look away. It's natural to feel ambivalence as you look through these dark and witty works by Ben Chen, but don’t worry- no bunnies, crickets or puppets, imaginary or otherwise, were harmed in the making of these twisted illustrations! -Via Sploid |
