But if there's anything in which one must never lose faith, it's the Internet's ability to generate new cat celebrities. So if Grumpy Cat seems not to be edgy enough for you, not to mention passé, say hello to Garfi. This Garfield-inspired cat resides in Turkey. Eye Contact Can Make Anything Creepy Posted: 06 Oct 2014 03:00 AM PDT Did you know that adding eye contact to certain actions can make them incredibly creepy? I had suspected as much, as I like to stare people in the eyes at weird times. An unbroken gaze can be really freaky as is, but add eating a banana into it and it takes it to a higher level than ever thought before. (YouTube Link) CollegeHumor is pretty consistent with this kind of twisted (but awesome) humor, so go check out their YouTube page if you get five minutes. Oh yes, there will be laughs. To me, they are nature's jewels. I grow various kinds all year. Orchids are a favorite of many flower lovers. The varieties seem endless; there are more than 25,000 known species of orchids. Research has dated some species back 120 million years, before the continents split into their present formation.  Here is an interesting collection of flowers, mostly of the orchid variety, that evoke mental images of other things entirely. Orchids have evolved to resemble the type of insect they must attract to propagate. So while these flowers bring to mind naked men, flying ducks and even Darth Vader, they are likely to favor a certain insect as well. Professor X Is A Wimp Posted: 06 Oct 2014 01:00 AM PDT Professor X of the X-Men is wimp. He really is. If you think about it, all he does is sit in that chair and read people's minds. Not too sure how cool that is. He doesn't even really fight. He just barks commands. A bad dictator, if you will. Screen Junkies picked up on this and made this stellar supercut of all the times the X-Men leader was a bit of a pansy. Warning, this may change the way you look at Professor X. How embarrassing and awkward? After hearing such complaints, have you ever thought "Yeah, right, what torture. Cry me a river." This mildly NSFW (no nudity but profanity, sexual simulation and sexual language) video of actors Brooklyn Decker and Patrick Wilson shooting a sex scene made me think that maybe there's some truth to the typical sex scene complaints made by actors. Watching them lying together awkwardly while the director and crew laugh and joke made me sort of embarrassed by proxy. If that's not bad enough, they have to endure being repeatedly spritzed with aerosol spray canned sweat. Haunts are becoming more extreme, and more disturbing, in an effort to outdo each other and up the fright factor for guests. All sorts of terrible things can happen in a haunted house, but what happens when your everyday life starts to feel like a haunt? (YouTube Link) This is the premise of a new found footage style horror flick from director Bobby Roe entitled Houses October Built, about a group of friends on a road trip in search of the ultimate haunted experience. I am not saying this because he is, technically, one of the greatest actors of our time. I am saying this because Nic Cage ensures insanity no matter what he is in, and insanity is watchable. Why Does <i>Star Trek</i>'s Dr. McCoy Wear a Pinky Ring? Posted: 05 Oct 2014 04:00 PM PDT Lately, I have been watching the original Star Trek series--something I have not regularly done since about 1988. I'm watching the show from start to finish. I noticed that on one early episode entitled "Mudd's Women," Dr. Leonard McCoy wears on his left pinky finger a gold ring with a blue stone. It struck me as an unusual costuming choice, so I did some googling. Terry Lee Rioux's From Sawdust to Stardust: The Biography of DeForest Kelley's, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy explains why Kelley wears a pinky ring. DeForest Kelly dearly loved his mother, Clora Kelley. Clora owned a ring that her brother had won in a card game while he was in France. When Clora died of cancer in 1957, her son was consumed with grief. But he was private about the depth of his feelings. He asked for only one item from her possessions: the ring. He wore it from then on in remembrance of her. When Kelley was recruited for Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry was firm: the actors would not wear jewelry. But Kelley was firmer: if he wasn't allowed to wear his ring, he wouldn't be on the show. Roddenberry conceded. You can see Kelley's ring throughout the series, though the stone is often turned into the palm to make it less noticeable. In the movie Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Sybok forces McCoy to relive his euthanasia of his own father. DeForest Kelley's ring gleams in the faint light during the scene of mourning and loss. It is a fitting accent to a story of the loss of parents. Kelley would continue to wear it until his own death in 1999. When Star Trek was rebooted in 2009, Karl Urban took up the role of Dr. McCoy. As you can see in this screenshot, he wears a ring on the pinkie finger of his left hand. According to an internet rumor, he did so to honor his predecessor, DeForest Kelley.

French Fries Around the World Posted: 05 Oct 2014 01:00 PM PDT Neato's own Miss Cellania wrote this delicious piece for Mental Floss entitled French Fries Around the World. The more examples I read, the hungrier I became. French fries are probably up there in my top five favorite foods. I don't meet many fries that I wouldn't go home with. Aside from Canada's poor fries that are drowning in a sea of creepy brown gunk, I'm all for every kind of fry mentioned in the article. My favorite way to eat french fries is definitely how they serve them in Britain. The last time I was in London, I ate at fish and chip shops just for the chips. She specializes in polyphonic singing, which means singing multiple notes simultaneously. When she performs, she can pair notes however she wishes in a vast variety of combinations. The musical effect is stunning and unlike anything I've ever heard from a human voice.

Trial by Ordeal or No Deal Posted: 05 Oct 2014 11:00 AM PDT The following is a list from the book Uncle John's Bathroom Reader History's Lists. No DNA. No fingerprints, No jury. For judges in medieval Europe, every trial was he said, she said. so they sometimes looked for divine intervention to determine guilt or innocence. If you were accused of a crime, you might be asked to prove your innocence through one of these ordeals. 1. GLOWING IRON An iron rod was heated until it was red-hot and, after an elaborate series of prayers and blessings, the accused carried it a distance of nine feet. His hands were then wrapped and inspected three days later. The logic was that God would protect the innocent and his hands would be healing. If his hands were festering, he was guilty. 2. BOILING WATER The accused would be asked to plunge his hand into a cauldron of boiling water (that had been blessed by a priest) and pull out a pebble or other object. As with the glowing iron, the accused’s hand would be bound and inspected three days later. If it was healing, he was found innocent; if it was’t, the verdict was guilty. 3. COLD WATER The accused’s hands and feet were bound and he was tossed into a river or pond. In the early Middle Ages, it was believed that God protected the innocent, so he would float, following the logic of other ordeals. But by the end of the Middle Ages, the reasoning was inverted. The new idea was that, since the water was blessed and thus served as a baptism for the accused, it would reject the guilty, making them float. This left the innocent to sink and hope for a quick rescue. 4. THE CROSS This ordeal was to settle disputes. Both parties faced the cross and extended their arms to the sides, imitating the shape of the cross. Whoever was the first to tire and put his arms down was in the wrong, since God would give strength to the righteous. 5. THE BLESSED MORSEL The accused was given Communion in a church before the alter. The First Baby Ever Born from a Transplanted Uterus Posted: 05 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT (Photo: The Lancet) 3 years ago, I mentioned that researchers in Sweden were planning the world's first uterus transplant. This would have offered new options for women for whom fertility is a lost cause. According to Dr. Mats Brannstrom of the University of Gothenburg, their efforts have been fruitful. Brannstrom and his colleagues published an article in the medical journal The Lancet reporting on the first successful live birth from a transplanted uterus. Last month, a 36-year old woman who received one of the transplanted uteri gave birth to a premature but healthy baby boy. She had been born without a uterus, but had healthy ovaries. A 61-year old friend of her family donated her uterus to the woman. 6 weeks after she gave birth, the woman had a period, which indicates that the uterus remains healthy. She could try for a second baby, but the AP reports that she's not considering that right now. -via io9

24 Sunsets in 24 Time Zones Captured in an Eight-hour Flight Posted: 05 Oct 2014 09:00 AM PDT The premise of this stunt is intriguing. Photographer Simon Roberts and pilot Jonathan Nicol took photographs of the sunset in every time zone for a project called Chasing Horizons. The purpose was to create an interesting ad for Citizen watches.   Over the course of 8 hours they literally chased the sun around the globe, staying in ‘the same moment in time’ and letting the Earth spin under them while Roberts captured all 24 sunsets along the way… or rather captured the sun trying to set on them while they fought back with technology and sheer force of will. The ad turned out okay, and the photographs, well, they aren’t the greatest sunset photographs, but they were in 24 different time zones. The question is, how did they chase the sun around the globe through every time zone in only eight hours? Robotic Butt Tests the Strength of Smartphones Posted: 05 Oct 2014 08:00 AM PDT Some owners of the new iPhone 6 report that it bends and even breaks when kept in back pants pockets. Consumer technology journalists are calling the scandal "Bendgate"--a reference to the Watergate scandal that brought down the Nixon Administration. This hardware problem probably won't destroy Apple, but it has caused the company to become the butt of many jokes. (Video Link) Samsung, one of Apple's competitors, would like for you to know that its Galaxy Note 4 smartphones are buttproof--or at least buttresistant. As this video shows, Samsung uses a robotic butt to repeatedly pound its phones in order to test their durability. -via Technabob

Milking Champion Sets New Record Posted: 05 Oct 2014 07:00 AM PDT In 2008, Gunther Wahl set the world record for milking a cow at two liters in two minutes. in 2012, Maurizio Paschetta smashed that record by getting four and a half liters. At the 2014 World Cow-milking Championship in Lenna, Italy, last week, Gianmario Ghirardi milked an astounding 8.7 liters in two minutes to win the title. The championship was not without controversy. The previous title holder, Paschetta, refused to participate this year. Why? “For a competition at this level I would have expected strong anti-doping checks on the cows and milkers to protect the animals and guarantee transparency of the top positions,” he was quoted as saying. “The event could be a showcase for the agricultural world and its traditions, but this has been neglected in the organization,” Paschetta said.   Hints of a doping scandal in the world of competitive milking? Her grilled cheese sandwiches are perfect for an elegant evening. To make one, first defrost 5 frozen taquitos. Line them up on a griddle and pour a beaten egg over them. Then add a slice of cheese-like food product over it. Cook an identical platform of 5 more taquitos and combine the two halves.
