They either don't understand what hypnosis is or just don't want others to know how powerful it can be. Let me explain what I mean. When someone tries to do classic "self-hypnosis" they are attempting to do two jobs at the same time; be the hypnotist and the subject.  They then have to switch back and forth between giving their hypnotic instructions and following them. This switching back and forth prevents the person from "losing themselves" in the hypnosis. In other words, they are not FULLY involved in following the instructions because they are partially involved in giving the instructions.  When someone is fully full involved in hypnosis means they don't perceive either the 'hypnotist' nor themselves as the subject. They are just experiencing FULLY what they are told to experience.  The goal of hypnosis (at least what Jeff and I teach) is to create an experience that is so absorbing and profound there is no question in the subjects mind something dramatic has happened. It is very hard, if not impossible, to do that with classic 'self-hypnosis'. SIDE NOTE -  This idea threatens a lot of hypnotists because it comes  too close to "mind control". What they refuse to consider  is that REAL hypnosis is mind control. In hypnosis there is no "self" for the subject to control!. The way to overcome this is to set up a trigger to go into deeeeep hypnosis while play a prerecorded audio of the hypnosis session. That way you won't have to occupy your mind with the hypnotic instruction while in hypnosis.  You can still get some result doing the back-and-forth hypnosis self-talk but I wouldn't call it hypnosis.  Jeff has an incredible course that describes the hypnosis process.  Using Jeff's hypnosis techniques I consistently have clients waking from the hypnosis saying "WOW!
