Researchers in the U.S. and Netherlands have developed fiber optic cable capable of speeds so fast, it puts Google Fiber to shame. Thanks to multi-mode fiber, they were able to reach speeds of 255 terabits per second (Tbps). At that rate, it would take 0.03 milliseconds to download a 1GB movie.



The board of commissioners in Lake County, Minn., voted recently to allocate $500,000 to pay contractors for their work on a fiber network that it owns. Two months ago, the county submitted a request to the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) for $6 million, but has yet to hear from the federal agency. According to the Duluth News Tribune, the county was past due on contractor bills and decided to pay them now to avoid delays.



Indiana Fiber Network (IFN) announced this week that Darryl Smith was promoted to become the company's director of network operations. The position was recently created to help the organization focus on customer service assurance operations, according to a company statement.



Metcom Network Services (MNS), a New York City-based colocation provider, has announced that it has become one of the first U.S.-based resellers of DE-CIX New York services.



Huawei has announced that it is building a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in Burundi, according to IT News Africa.



The Open Technology Institute (OTI) has just released a report, The Cost of Connectivity 2014, that compares the cost of broadband in major cities across the U.S. and internationally. Between July and September 2014, the organization collected data from ISP websites around the world. Among its many findings, OTI concluded that Internet service in the U.S. was generally slower and cost more than in many other developed cities around the world.



When the allegations Edward Snowden made against the NSA started bearing fruit, many public and private organizations around the world started questioning their business relationships with companies based in the United States. As the news about what the NSA was doing continued to get worse, the same organizations started searching for alternative delivery methods for their digital infrastructure.
