Good Looking Customers Eat for Free at This Chinese Restaurant

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

I’ll never have to pay for a meal again—provided that I can get to this restaurant in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. At this sophisticated eatery, a team of employees from a plastic surgery clinic assesses the appearances of guests. Under the “Pay by Face” program, if you look good enough, then your meal is free. The scoring rubric and grading results are publicly available, so restaurant guests know how well they stack up.

It would, of course, be foolish for Alex to set up such an arrangement for the NeatoShop. Our readers would drive us into insolvency if we only charged the plain-looking.

A Corgi at Disneyland

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

Cesar Zamora took his adorable corgi Pancake to Disneyland for a day of fun and photography. It wasn’t Pancake’s first trip to the the Happiest Place on Earth, but it was a memorable one, as she posed with Alladin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Merida, Stitch, Peter Pan, Ariel, Donald Duck, and Cinderella. But the real highlight was meeting the Disney dogs Pluto and Dug. You can see the entire photo shoot at Zamora’s blog. -via The Daily Dot

For Your Inner 12-Year Old: Nunchucks iPhone Case

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

I can’t express it better than John Brownlee of FastCoDesign does:

Tragically enough for the 12-year-old inside all of us, there are all too few opportunities to whip around a pair of nunchucks in contemporary adult society.

You can buy real nunchucks and flip them around to show off your skills, but then you’ll be asked to leave the public library. The Trick Cover case for the iPhone 6 is a great alternative. Flip it around like you’re a real martial artist.

As this promotional video shows, it could actually be useful. If you need to open and close your phone quickly with only one hand, the Trick Cover will do the trick. If you need an actual weapon, then you should probably stick with the iStab.

Manhattan's First Cat Café is Open for Business

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

Meow Parlour, New York City’s first permanent cat café, is newly open on the Lower East Side. The café is booking customers online, which for the most part will eliminate one issue common to all popular NYC establishments: long lines. Customers can book from 30 minutes to a maximum of five hours at the café.

A sister shop called Meow Parlour Patisserie is around the corner to sell treats and coffee to customers wanting to bring a bite to eat during their stay. Inside Meow Parlour, customers enjoy free wifi and the company of adoptable shelter cats from KittyKind, a local no-kill shelter.  The café was established by Christine Ha, the founder of the Macaron Parlour, and her employee, Emilie LeGrande

“Slap Her": Children's Reactions

A media group in Italy recruited a few young boys for a video project, but the real purpose of the video was not explained to them beforehand. Watch as they take direction up to a point. When the director asks them to slap a girl, all bets are off. The result is a thought-provoking PSA about domestic violence.  -via Brother Bill

This Canal System Runs Boats on Train Tracks

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST

(Photo: Henryk Borawski)

The 51-mile Elblag Canal stretches across 6 lakes from the Polish cities of Elblag to Ostróda. One 6-mile section includes an elevation difference of 326 feet, which is more than conventional locks could adjust for when the canal was built in the middle of the Nineteenth Century.

So Georg Jacob Steenke, the engineer in charge of the project, developed a novel solution. To cross the steep section of the canal, boats slip onto converted railroad cars, which are then pulled across the land to the next lake.

Although the Elblag Canal is no longer in commercial use, it's actively used by recreational boaters and tourists. It's the only canal of this type still in use in the world.

Hippo Bread Rolls Basking in Soup

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST

They're hungry, hungry, but they're also eating healthy. Sandra Denneler made these happy hippopotami with frozen dinner roll dough. After baking, she brushed them with butter and added black eyed peas for the eyes and black beans for the nostrils. Then she placed them in a warm lake of tomato bisque.

Hello My Battle Toady! - He's One High Kickin' Hero

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

Hello My Battle Toady! by Eman!

He'd once gone by the name of Michigan J., when he was much smaller and inexplicably a frog, but now that he was a toad by the name of Zitsigan he was feeling much better. He didn't sing as much anymore, nor did he do all that much dancing, but when there was a porcine butt to kick, or a martian named Marvin to disintegrate, Zitsigan would spring into action with a battle dance that really knocked their socks off! He might be big and ugly compared to those early Warner days, but at least he still has the gams of a dancer and the voice of an amphibian angel!

This Hello My Battle Toady! t-shirt by Eman! totally kick buns! It's a hilarious way to show your love of old school cartoons and crazy comic toads, and you won't have to battle any pigs to get your hands on one!

Why Tipping Should Be Banned

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

(YouTube link)

There are very few subjects that will get people’s blood boiling on internet forums faster than tipping. The system is so weird that there are plenty of winners and losers, and the only way to avoid dealing with it is to never eat out. And the rest of the world just scratches their heads, wondering why we put up with a system that doesn’t pay servers at least the federal minimum wage. In this Adam Ruins Everything video from College Humor, we find out how our current tipping system got started and how it just plain sucks for most of the people involved. Contains NSFW language.

Police Puzzled by Fried Egg Left at Crime Scene

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST

(Photo: Isles of Scilly Police)

The Isles of Scilly are a British archipelago off the coast of Cornwall. Police there recently investigated the burglary of a soccer equipment storage shed at a school. There, they found a fried egg left at the door. The Cornishman quotes a member of the police force:

In the case of the egg, Sergeant Taylor said: “Somebody has forced open the door to the football club shed at the playing field next to the school.

“It is fairly evident that this was done sometime over Tuesday evening and most probably to get a football out for a kick around.

“Regrettably however the door was damaged in the process as can be seen in the picture with the bottom of the door split.

“There are few clues as to how this came to happen other than a fried egg was left at the scene.”

I don't think the egg is all that mysterious. Costumed criminals leave calling cards all the time, such as the Riddler's puzzles and the Joker's joker playing cards. This new supervillain is leaving his own signature. The only question that remains is: who is this new nemesis? In the comments, offer your own hypotheses.

We showed you Hong King’s Museum of Visual Culture’s exhibit of neon signs, but America has its own Neon Museum. It’s only fitting that the museum of this particularly American art form is in Las Vegas, where neon still lights up the night. Iconic signs are donated when the owners find they cost more to repair than to replace, or when a business folds and finds no buyer for the sign. Sometimes they are restored to their former glory for all to enjoy. -via Geeks Are Sexy

How to Fall in Love

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

Psychologist Arthur Aron set up an experiment in which two strangers, a man and a woman, met at the laboratory. They were instructed to discuss the answers to a set of 36 increasingly intimate questions, and then stare into each others eyes for four minutes. What happened? Six months later, they were married, and even invited the psychology lab staff to the wedding.

That was twenty years ago. Mandy Len Catron found herself discussing Dr. Aron’s experiment with an acquaintance at a bar. They decided to recreate that scenario, right then and there, over beers. Catron wrote about the experience at the New York Times, and you can try to guess the outcome. -via Digg

Anime Recommendations and Open Thread

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

(Inside Ball t-shirt on sale at the NeatoShop)

Last February, June, and August, I offered anime viewing recommendations, as well as invited readers to discuss anything they want about the wonderful world of anime. Let's do it again!

The tag line of Alznoah.Zero is "Let Justice Be Done, Though the Heavens Fall." This is from the classical Latin proverb fiat justitia ruat caelum. It begins with peace negotiations between hostile powers--Earth and Mars--that are marred by a horrific crime. It appears obvious who the culprits are, but there is more that is unseen.

This is a complex, sophisticated story. It's a mecha anime, but not a simplistic one. Kotaku's anime critic Richard Eisenbeis says that unlike many heroic mecha stories, "Aldnoah.Zero takes this common formula and turns it on its head." It is a gripping, dark story that reminds me of Game of Thrones.

Lord Marksman and Vanadis is a fantasy series about the young lord of a small dominion that lays wedged between larger warring nations. His name is Tigrevurmud Vorn. Tigre is brave, totally committed to the well-being of his people, and a spectacularly gifted archer. He and the war maidens--a handful of women with magical weapons--try to manage the political environment in such a way that defeats tyranny and imperial aggression.

One nice feature of Lord Marksman and Vanadis is the battle animations. The narrator frequently uses maps to show the pace and change of the engagements. These add an additional perspective to the events in the series.

Brynhildr in the Darkness is a dark science fiction series. Ryouta, a high school boy, meets a girl that he is convinced is a long-lost childhood friend. She reveals to him that she has escaped from a horrific laboratory that altered her body to give her fantastic powers--but only at a terrible price.

Be forewarned that this series has quite a bit of blood and gore.

I've eagerly awaited the debut of the new series KanColle, which I've read is similar to my favorite anime series, Girls und Panzer. Only the first episode is available at the moment. It's good.

The name KanColle is an abbreviation of Kantai Collection, which means "combined fleet." It's a story about girls who are incarnations of World War II-era warships. In this sense, it's similar to Upotte!!, which is about girls who are anthropomorphized rifles (yes, really). You have to suspend disbelief. But once you do, you'll have a good time watching KanColle.

What anime do you enjoy? In the comments, share your recommendations and any other reflections you have on anime.

This nature film follows the epic journey of a flock of the species Teeshirticus domesticus as they make their annual migration back to their natural habitat to nest. All it's missing is the soothing voice of Sir David Attenborough. Well, actually it’s an IKEA ad called The Joy of Storage, but I think my title is funnier. Your mileage may vary. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

The Power Is Yours - Our Captain Has Left The Planet

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 10:40 AM PST

The Power Is Yours by Bamboota

We were foolish to think the Captain would stay with us forever, and for all the good he did on this planet he could never seem to get the balance right. He'd championed the use of good ecological judgment, recycling, and proper waste disposal, but in the end his very cleanliness is what killed him. It turns out the Captain's strange blue body was fueled by toxic waste- his lungs were fueled by smog, his veins were made to pump pure poison through his heart, and his stomach demanded a diet of radioactive waste. As he removed these things from the Earth he also removed his power source, sacrificing himself for the good of humanity. His final words- the power is yours...to kill me!

Retro animated adventure awaits you when you wear this The Power Is Yours t-shirt by Bamboota, it's the scary cool way to show your love of the Planet!

Souls of the Damned Found in McDonald's Ice Cream Sundae

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 10:34 AM PST

Twitter user @bonerman_inc (I know, I know) ordered an ice cream sundae from a local McDonald's restaurant but got something extra: souls of the damned, right there in the strawberry rivulets (or demon core, your pick) of his soft serve ice cream.

Naturally, he tweeted the ordeal to warn humankind of the impending apocalypse that the "souls of the damned ice cream" heralded. Either that or diabetes so repent, people, repent.

Downtown Deer

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST

It would be easy to assume that these surreal captures are Photoshopped, yet they actually represent an unusual aspect of life in Japan, specifically in the city of Nara and on Miyajima Island. In these regions, wild deer were once considered sacred, and presently they are a common sight, even in the most urban of areas. Nara has a population of half a million human residents and 1000+ deer, which are a familiar sight to humans who regularly navigate around them.

This photo series by photographer Yoko Ishii captures the phenomenon in these interesting shots. To learn more, see video of the deer as well as view more photos by Ishii, visit this link.

Whodunit: A Winter's Tale

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

The following is a Whodunit by Hy ConradThese mysteries are from The Little Giant® Book of Whodunits by Hy Conrad and Matt LaFleur. Can you solve the mystery before you read the solution?

(Image credit: Flickr user Simon Laroche)

In the dead of winter, the citizens of Mountebank, Minnesota, grabbed at any excuse for a party, especially when it was hosted by Ama Wheeler, the richest woman in town. As usual, this one was rowdy and crowded and a huge success—until about 12:30 A.M. That's when Ama noticed that her prized Ming vase was missing from the entry-hall table.

When the police arrived, they found all the revelers herded into the living room, with Ama standing guard like an angry sheepdog. The house was searched. Then the house perimeter. Then the guests' cars. No vase.

"You're going to have to take their statements," Ama told the police chief. "I don't suppose it will do much good. At a party like this, people can barely remember their own movements, much less keep track of others'."

Philip McGlass stepped forward with his statement. "I was one of the first to arrive, about the same time as Julie Becker. I never once left the house. If people don't remember me it's because I spent half the party in a bedroom, watching a basketball game." The chief took down Philip's information, then told him he could go.

Rod Shallowitz was next. "I have to get home," he apologized. "If I'm not there for the twins' two o'clock feeding, my wife will have my head." Rod also claimed never to have left the premises. "Oh," he recalled. "No. I did step out onto a second-story balcony, but it was so bitter cold I came right back in."

Julie Becker was the third to make a statement. She also claimed to have never left and seen nothing. "I spent much of the party flitting from group to group and munching at the various food tables." The chief dismissed her, too, and watched as she went into the hall and grabbed her coat from the top of a crowded coat rack.

"This is going to take all night," Ama complained.

The chief disagreed. "No. I think I have a viable suspect already."

Who does the chief suspect? And why?

Skull Bottle Lamp

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

Crystal Head Vodka sells its liquors in glass bottles shaped like skulls. This is the same type of bottle featured in the highest traffic post ever published at Neatorama.

Etsy seller Heirloom Claremont sells lovely lamps and wall sconces from liquor and wine bottles. The glass skull lamp, though, sets just the right tone. The seller cleverly suggests switching to a red bulb for Halloween.
