RC Rainbow Dash

Posted: 15 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

This is the Rainbow Maiden, a beautiful RC aircraft by David Lewis. It's designed to look like Rainbow Dash, a daredevil pegasus on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. While he doesn't provide any technical specs, we can be confident that Lewis's design at least 20% cooler than an ordinary RC airplane.

Here it is the Rainbow Maiden in flight. Watch it soar! Perhaps with a bit more engine power, it could do a sonic rainboom.

10 Amazing Stories Of People Who Woke Up From Comas

Posted: 15 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

People survive and recover from comas fairly often, but the odds of recovery depend on a person’s illness or injuries and the length of time they are incapacitated. The longer the coma, the lower the odds of recovery. The ten (actually twelve) people in this list are all very different: their comas lasted from a few days to decades long, and their recoveries varied greatly. Some recovered very gradually. One was in a locked-in state for years while no one knew. And three presented strange language deficiencies when they came to. One was Ben McMahon.

Growing up in Australia, Ben McMahon learned French and Mandarin, but was never fluent in them. In 2012, he was in a car accident which left him comatose for a week. Doctors said he would be lucky if he survived. He beat the odds and woke up but, oddly, he only spoke Mandarin and couldn’t speak English. He could also write in Mandarin.

Eventually, Ben regained the ability to speak English, but didn’t lose the ability to speak Mandarin. As of September 2014, Ben is living in Shanghai where he attends school, but also gives walking tours of the city. In fact, his Mandarin is so good it impresses native speakers, and he is the host of a TV show in Shanghai.

Some of the stories of coma patients contain disturbing circumstances of violence, injury, and abuse. Read them all at ListVerse. -via mental_floss

Nine Houses Which Were Built Out Of Spite

Posted: 15 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

(Image Link)

People build houses and buildings for all sorts of good reasons, and a few bad ones, but building a house just for spite? Now that’s a new one!

Jerry Seinfeld once tried to return a jacket out of spite for the salesman who sold it to him, and that didn’t work out very well for him, but spite will make you do crazy things as you’ll see in 9 Houses Built Just For Spite, vintage mental_floss circa 2013.

(Image Link)

It is there that you will discover how one man dealt with noisy people using the alley next to his house, and how a doctor guy from Maryland kept the city from building a road through his property, and how this other dude in Nevada dealt with living next door to his enemy.

Spoiler alert- every story involves a house being built, and some spite! (Insert obligatory spite as building material joke here)

22 Real Places That Inspired Disney Animated Movies

This is Prince Eric's castle from The Little Mermaid.

(Photo: Erik Charlton)

This is Chillon Castle, a real building in Switzerland.

The resemblance is striking, isn't it? Chillon Castle sits on the shore of Lake Geneva. It's existed in some form since at least 1150 and was most likely built to control what was a major road in medieval times. Chillon Castle has been a fortress, a prison, and an arsenal. It entered the popular imagination after famous writers, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron wrote about it. In "The Prisoner of Chillon," Byron describes the castle through the voice of someone trapped there:

There are seven pillars of Gothic mould,
In Chillon's dungeons deep and old,
There are seven columns, massy and grey,
Dim with a dull imprison'd ray,
A sunbeam which hath lost its way,
And through the crevice and the cleft
Of the thick wall is fallen and left;

And so it was an appropriate choice for the animators of The Little Mermaid.

This is only 1 of 22 real life places that inspired the background artists of Disney animated movies. You can view the rest at When on Earth.

10 Signs You're a Crazy Cat Person

Chris Poole and his cats Cole and Marmalade (previously at Neatorama) demonstrate the signs of a crazy cat person. None of them are surprising, but the cats sure are cute acting their parts in the list. My family has four cats, and my husband and I spend an inordinate amount of time during the day catering to their needs and desires. But my oldest daughter is the one who wears cat clothing, hangs artwork of our cats, and sleeps surrounded by them. She’s a textbook case. -via Tastefully Offensive

Farmers Say Goodbye to the Bull Who Sired 500,000 Offspring

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST

(Photo: Genex)

This is Toystory, a bull who died on Thanksgiving Day of last year. Mourners recently laid his body to rest on a hill in Shawano, Wisconsin. From an evolutionary point of view, he was extraordinarily successful, having sired approximately half a million offspring.

During the 13 years of his life, Toystory's job was to produce the finest bovine semen on earth. His genetic material was highly prized and he was a prolific producer of it. In fact, as a member of the "millionaries' club" among bulls, Toystory produced approximately 2.4 million units of semen for artificial insemination. The Wall Street Journal describes Toystory's rise to fame:

Back then, dairy producers had to see how the daughters of a bull turned out before deciding to buy his semen. The farmers wanted to see how much milk a cow produced, the fat and protein levels of her output, and how well she handled the rigors of milking.

By the mid-2000s, producers liked what they were seeing in Toystory’s offspring, and sales of his semen started to surge. He scored highly on influential performance rankings watched by the global dairy industry. Straws cost upward of $60 apiece and were in demand at home and abroad. In 2009, Genex says, he entered the millionaires club.

Toystory grew into a global brand through a rare mix of fertility, genetics and looks. His semen was good at getting cows pregnant and his daughters were easy to birth and dependably strong.

-via Dave Barry

P.S. Now it's storytime.

After I married my wife, I traveled with her to her hometown. While there, I met one of her uncles. In conversation, I asked "What do you do for a living?" He replied, "I'm in the semen business."

This gave me a moment's pause, but only a moment. After all, we were in south Texas, which is cattle country. So there would probably be a market for the artificial insemination of cattle.

Later, my wife explained that I had misunderstood her uncle. What he had said was, "I'm in the cement business."

Moving, Powerful Photos of the Human Race

Egyptian woman kisses policeman who refrained from firing at protesters | Image: We of countries not ravaged by war, stifled by poverty and rife with lack of human rights and freedoms sometimes take for granted how fortunate we are. Globally, there are so many who are suffering. It's easy to get caught up in our busy lives and lose sight of how much we have for which to be thankful.

These photographs serve as reminders to live with gratitude, joy and purpose; and be thinking of ways we might help others near and far. Not all of the images in the collection linked below depict misery: some show love, bravery and poignant moments of reflection. Yet all are captivating.

Happy Feast of the Ass!

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

(Image: Southern Fried Catholicism)

Today, January 14, is the Feast of the Ass (In Latin: Festum Asinorum), a Roman Catholic feast day that commemorates the flight of baby Jesus into Egypt to escape King Herod the Great's slaughter of Judean babies. According to tradition, Jesus and Mary rode on the back of an ass during their journey.

Although it has fallen out of practice, there was a time in Medieval Europe when the Feast of the Ass was quite big. During the liturgy, the congregation would respond to the presiding priest by braying like donkeys. From The Catholic Encyclopedia:

At the end of Mass, the priest, having turned to the people, in lieu of saying the 'Ite, Missa est', will bray thrice; the people instead of replying 'Deo Gratias' say, 'Hinham, hinham, hinham.'

"Hinham" is the Latin expression for the sound that a donkey makes.

Extremely Close-Up Footage of Lava Pouring into Water

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST

(Video Link)

Last year, Kawika Singson used a GoPro to capture amazing footage of lava spilling into the ocean. Twisted Sifter notes that the camera was "hopefully on a very long pole." This is only one of many incredible lava videos in his YouTube channel. Watch more and flinch repeatedly.

Singson shot the videos at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. It's very dangeorus work:

It was extremely difficult to get to," he told The Huffington Post. "The videos can only show you so much, but to actually be there, to feel the heat. ... The heat is one thing, but the gases are extremely toxic."

Singson, a Hawaii local who explores the lava and volcano at least once a week, outfits himself with a respirator when filming lava closely and wears long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect himself from burns. Although his rubber tennis shoes sometimes melt as he walks over the scorching grounds, he prefers them to fire-proof boots, in case he has to run from a collapsing area or a random combustion. The thin soles also help him more accurately feel the ground over which he's walking.

"You have to be on the top of your game out there," he said. "First of all, you have the ocean and the current, then you have the lava, then you have to worry about bridges collapsing and then you have to worry about the super-hot toxic steam. All those things are going on at the same time."

Illustrator Draws Jail Scenes While Serving Time

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST

"He asked me how many days I’d gone without a shower. I told him four. He said it wasn’t long enough, as some women hadn’t showered in a week."

Elana Pritchard
, a Los Angeles-based cartoonist and animator, violated a court order and was sent to jail. Her supervisor at work advised Elana to keep a visual record of her existence there, and she did. Over a period of two months spent in Century Regional Detention Facility (CRDF) in Lynwood and Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, Pritchard used a pencil and found paper scraps to draw scenes of daily life in the jails. A few of her drawings are shown here, accompanied by her explanations.

See more glimpses of Elana Pritchard's days in jail here. (Some are NSFW-ish due to profanity.)

"At CRDF they did what was called "linen exchange" once a week. You got two pairs of clothes, two pairs of socks a few sports bras and about four pairs of underwear. Used underwear."

"Supposedly, if you flushed your toilet several times in a row, the water in the sink would get hotter and you could use it to make tea or coffee."

Unlicensed Frozen Games Let You Perform a C-Section on Anna and Brain Surgery on Elsa

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST

At the end of Frozen, it is implied that Anna and Kristoff are a couple. An odd app game called “Anna Giving Birth” by Oleg Vinogorodov takes the relationship further. They get married and Anna gets pregnant. When it’s time for Anna to give birth, she has a cesarean section. In the game, your job is to perform the operation. In the scene screenshotted above, it’s time to make the incision. You can see more images from the game at BuzzFeed.

But there’s more! Carolyn Cox of The Mary Sue informs us of a dress-up browser game unlike any other.* In “Elsa Frozen Brain Surgery,” you must perform neurosurgery on Elsa. The fact that she’s smiling as you shave her head is awkward, but that’s probably normal during this procedure.

Cop Arrests Teenager, Teenager Then Saves Cop’s Life

On September 10 of last year, police in Fort Lauderdale, Florida arrested 17-year old Jamal Rutledge for allegedly violating probation and committing burglary. While Officer Franklin Foulks processed him at the police station, he collapsed and fell unconscious. No one was in a position to see this except Jamal, who immediately kicked on a door until he got the attention of other officers. Those officers performed CPR and used a defibrillator on Foulks, who is alive and recovering. You can see the incident in this security camera footage:

(Video Link)

The police department is grateful to Jamal. The city is presenting him with a commendation. ABC News (warning: auto-play) quotes Det. DeAnna Greenlaw:

Regarding Rutledge, Greenlaw said the department had hopes it may have a positive impact on the youth, who has been arrested again since the incident.

"By commending the juvenile as well [as the officers] we hope the juvenile will maybe turn some things around, and not have such negative interactions with the police," she said. […]

Greenlaw said the teen remains under probation restrictions, but the department is hoping that they will be lifted for the ceremony.

"We wanted to make sure we commended him for making the right decision," Greenlaw said. "We wanted to make a positive impact on him and his vision of police officers."

The Incredible Hogan - He's Wrestling With His Anger

The Incredible Hogan by Stationjack

Terry's wrestle mania had reached the ultimate level, and he felt like he could no longer contain the ripping and flexing energy welling up inside him, so he decided to let it out. Andre and the Undertaker pushed him too far that day, and all the little Hulkamaniacs in the world expected Hogan to become their hero, so he let his anger run free and turned into something more monster than man. His skin turned from orange to green, but thankfully his moustache stayed nice and golden yellow, and he was so tall that he towered over those other little brothers from the federation like a real hulk!

Bob Ross Sans 'Fro: A Revelation

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

Ross, with trademark 'do

Bob Ross is somewhat of a cultural icon at this point. He had an interesting life story. Ross served in the Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. His soft-spoken, almost milquetoast television persona was actually a response to his having been so tough in the military. He once told the Orlando Sentinel that part of his military role was being

"the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work"

He swore to himself he'd never scream at people again after he left the service.

According to Ross' biography entitled Happy Clouds, Happy Trees: The Bob Ross Phenomenonpublished in April of 2014, Ross' trademark afro was born as a way to decrease spending. Strapped for cash prior to being on television, Ross decided to have his hair permed in order to save money on haircuts. Though he wasn't fond of the hairstyle, once his show started airing, it was too iconic to alter.

The photo below is what Ross looked like without the perm, an image posted by Redditor DXGypsy. It's amazing how a change in hairstyle renders him practically incognito. But if you think Ross looks different there, you won't believe what he looked like as a young member of the Air Force. Talk about unrecognizable (and attractive)! See that photo here.

Boy Gets a Clone Trooper Prosthetic Arm

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

Seven-year-old Liam Porter of Augusta, Georgia, is growing up fast. So fast that he keeps outgrowing his prosthetic arm, and insurance coverage limits the number of new arms he can get. Meanwhile, John Peterson of Augusta got a 3D printer and volunteered with the organization E-nable, which coordinates a network of people all over the world to make prosthetics limbs. Peterson made a prosthetic for Liam that resembled a robot and called it a Clone Trooper arm. Liam got his arm during a surprise party after he and his friend Jacob watched a movie at a local theater. The Georgia Garrison of the 501st Legion was on hand to make it extra special.

The troopers of the Georgia garrison of the 501st Legion – whose motto is “Bad guys doing good” – presented Liam with a “Friend of the Garrison” certificate and he fits right in with them as he poses in his helmet with his left arm outstretched, looking identical to theirs. Inside their armor, Jake and Melissa Barnes, of Atlanta, and local artist Jen Belgin, who is some kind of Imperial officer, turn heads as they lead Liam around the lobby drawing smiles and stares and posing for pictures. Belgin painted the helmet and detailed the arm, writing Liam’s name on it in a squiggly language called Aurebesh.

Using his new trooper arm, Liam high-fives Melissa.

“Looking good, sir,” she said, since Liam is now a commander and outranks her. “I like the helmet.”

Later, things quickly devolve as Liam and Jacob grab their blasters and take the troopers hostage.

“Wow, that escalated really quickly,” Jake says, his hands in the air. Liam is a big fan of the Star Wars movies but the family didn’t know what was coming, Ryan said.

“We were just as surprised as he was,” she said.

Read more about Peterson and how he made Liam’s new arm at the Augusta Chronicle. -via Geeks Are Sexy

2015 Resolutions, as Drawn by Linzie Hunter

UK-based illustrator Linzie Hunter, who was previously featured at Neatorama for her amusing drawings of spam headlines, has a new project illustrating resolutions for 2015 that are submitted to her at her request. During the entire month of January, people who send Linzie their new year's resolutions either to her website or on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, might see them posted online as the charming illustrations shown here. Not only are the illustrations aesthetically pleasing, but I think some of the more specific ones, which also list the country of origin of the submission, are quite interesting as well. Ray Bradbury’s Home Demolished

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

The house where author Ray Bradbury lived for over 50 years went on sale last year. You can get a good look at it in the real estate listing photos. Renowned architect Thom Mayne and his wife purchased the house for $1.67 million. And Friday they had it torn down.

The discussion under all these stories, and the post at Metafilter, divides fans into two camps: those who don't want to see history being demolished, and those who say this is no big deal. Both have valid points.

Those who regret seeing the house torn down are sad that it wasn’t preserved for its historical value. It could have been made into a museum. It was a perfectly habitable house, built in 1937, with some interesting architectural details.

Others say the house was outdated and not particularly significant in its architecture. Bradbury’s legacy lives on in his writings. And no one wants to live in a house with only three bedrooms. If fans wanted to preserve it, they should have bought it. One commenter pointed out that if every home in Los Angeles where a celebrity once lived were preserved, there could be no new homes built.

POLL: What do you think?

 • Ray Bradbury’s home should have been saved for its historical significance.
 • The owner should do what he wants with the property, even bulldozing it.
 • I have no opinion; show me the answers!

For Traction, Mountain Climbers Sand and Superglue Their Fingers

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

(Photo: Corey Rich/Bigup Productions)

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson are elite mountain climbers. They're currently trying to climb up El Capitan, a rock formation in Yosemite National Park. That's a nearly sheer rock wall--a vertical climb.

Caldwell and Jorgenson are free climbers, which means that they use only their hands and feet. That's right. They're trying to climb this:

(Photo: National Park Service)

. . . while holding on with nothing more than their hands and feet.

As a result, the condition of the skin on their fingertips is of paramount importance. It can be the difference between life and death. Fingertip skin care has become a refined and sophisticated art among climbers. In National Geographic, Andrew Bisharat describes it:

Post climb, moisturizers and essential oils are applied to speed the healing process. Grape-seed oil, beeswax, and vitamin E have all been known to work overnight miracles, restoring skin that's been scraped raw on the sharp granite.

When a fingertip callus does split, climbers have devised various remedies that allow them to keep going. Athletic tape—applied in an X-pattern to allow full mobility of the finger joint—can provide enough protection for an injury. More advanced than the X-pattern is the "Miami thong," also called the "British flag," in which separate strips of tape are applied in layers, first longitudinally, then in a crisscross design.

A common problem with tape is its tendency to slip off the finger. Instead of wrapping the finger more tightly and risking it going numb, climbers often use Super Glue, applying it directly to the skin before wrapping the digit in tape.

If they are successful, Caldwell and Jorgeson will be the first people to ever free climb up El Capitan.

Shocker: 1946 Yearbook Captions are Misogynistic, Offensive

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

A Redditor with the handle The_Blackfish_ posted high school yearbook pages from the year 1946, and the captions describing the students particularly the female students — were abysmal. I know that, back then, women were mostly considered beings placed on the Earth to be gawked at, married and procreated with, but seeing comments like that in print really hit the point home for me.

See all of the yearbook pages in the Reddit post here.
