Kansas Farmer Makes Art by Herding His Cattle Posted: 29 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST Derek Klingenberg is a farmer and YouTube celebrity in Kansas. When we last saw him, he was summoning his cattle by playing Lorde's "Royals" on a trombone. But Klingenberg is a Renaissance man--he's not limited to one form of art. He knows both music and the visual arts. He demonstrates his talent for the latter by herding his cattle in such a way that they form a smiley face. An aerial drone captured his impressive craftsmanship. -via Tastefully Offensive
5 Criminals Who Were Hilariously Good at Escaping Jail Posted: 29 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST Harry Houdini was known as the world’s greatest escape artist. But he was never kept confined as a prisoner of the state, where the stakes are higher. Some folks developed a talent for escaping from real incarceration, because by golly, they kept getting arrested and jailed! There’s the story of Paddy Mitchell, a bank robber who, along with his gang who wore masks of presidents, robbed over 100 banks. Their exploits inspired the movie Point Break. Paddy almost killed himself during his second prison break.
Paddy Mitchell is only one of the five prison escape artists profiled in a list at Cracked.
The Traditional Carved Wood Guitars of Japan are Incredibly Beautiful Posted: 29 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST (Photo: Inami Wood Carving Collective) The Inami style of wood carving dates back to Eighteenth Century Japan. The master craftsmen there make the finest sculptures and other implements rendered in wood. In addition to more traditional uses for their craft, the artisans also make bodies for electric guitars. They are breathtakingly beautiful, especially the guitar bodies shaped like dragons. You can view more of them at Rocket News 24.
5 Ways NOT To Handle A Nasty Facebook Breakup Posted: 29 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST Some Facebook etiquette rules are presented here as a 194s-style educational film. The anachronistic idioms are hilarious! Facebook itself is described here as “the electric friendship generator.” But the advice here deals with real-life modern social conventions, and it can be boiled down to “think before you post.” -via Nag on the Lake
Posted: 29 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST I grew up watching television—really more than I should have. Back then, to watch a new episode, you had to wait until it aired the next week. If you missed it because you had other plans . . . well, too bad. You missed it. Now, it’s normal to watch an entire season of a show and only that show for a while. The television watching experience is very different. Tony Wilson of Dorkly summarized it in 5 cartoons. You can view the rest here.

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST When you’re a webcomic artist, you can take shortcuts by just making something up that will work. The riddle is solved on a technicality! But don’t think you’re so smart -after all, Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx and look where it got him. This comic is from John McNamee at Pie Comic.
Mutant Pirate - He's Jolly But His Name Ain't Roger Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST With a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum a pirate will drunkenly saunter their way into your port town and cause trouble, but Logan isn't some eyepatch sportin' swabbie with a peg leg. He's a new kind of pirate, a freaky fellow who has no need of societal norms, and when he shows up in town folks know things are about to get dicey. They call him Wolverine for a reason- he's short tempered, savage, and loves tearing into people with his mighty sharp claws. Those swashbucklers can have their sabers and wenches, all Logan needs to have a good time are a snick snick and a bloodthirsty smile... Slice through the forces of boring fashion, bring home this Mutant Pirate t-shirt by Andriu and you'll see how Jolly your fellow X-fans can be! The Set of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Is Now on Public Display Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST For more than three decades, Fred Rogers was our neighbor. Through his television programs, he was a special friend who helped children grow up healthy. If you were a child during his era, you got to visit his neighborhood through the screen. Now you can do so in real life. The Heinz History Center in Rogers’s own city of Pittsburgh has several items from his set on public display. (Photos: Senator John Heinz History Center) Among them is King Friday’s castle, the Great Oak Tree, Mister Rogers’ living room, and several of his puppets. -via Daily of the Day P.S. A few months ago, I read Many Ways to Say I Love You: Wisdom for Parents and Children from Mister Rogers. I highly recommend it. This book helped me clarify who I want to be as a father.

Extreme Pogo Artists are Insane Posted: 28 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST You could call them insanely good. This combination extreme sport and art form is called Xpogo, and it looks terrifying. At least these guys are wearing helmets. That only makes sense, as the best practitioners are well aware of how many falls it takes to achieve this level of competence (otherwise they'd be dead). This compilation is brought to you by the folks who do the People Are Awesome series. -Thanks, Dan!
The Best Hotel Concierge Ever Gives a Guest Nick Cage Pictures Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST At a fancy hotel like the Hotel Indigo along San Antonio’s Riverwalk, the concierge staff is there to ensure that your special (but legal) needs are tended to. Imgur member FreePsychicReadings decided to put them to the test. She asked a concierge to place on her bed a framed photo of actor Nicholas Cage as he appeared in the movie Con Air. Ramon the concierge was prompt, efficient, and accurate. But the test wasn’t over. The guest wanted more Nicholas Cage pictures—and specific ones—placed in particular areas of her room. You can view more photos and screenshots from their exchange here. -via 22 Words
Posted: 28 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST Look at these adorable little hedgehogs! Don’t you just want to eat them up? That’s what you do, because they are dumplings, stuffed with sweet cream filling. But they are only available at one restaurant, in the Chinatown section of Yokohama, Japan.
The dumplings are available individually or in economical herds, er, multi-packs to go. See more pictures at Rocket News 24. -via Nag on the Lake

Man Proposes to His Girlfriend with a Traffic Speed Camera Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST (Photo via Mitteldeutsche Zeitung) Being a romantic sort, Christian Breier found the perfect way to propose to his girlfriend. He drove over the speed limit past a traffic speed monitoring camera near his home in Leipzig, Germany. While doing so, he held up a sign saying (in German), “Will you marry me?” A police computer issued him a ticket and mailed it to him, along with a photo of his car speeding past the camera. When Breier’s girlfriend opened up the ticket, she found his marriage proposal. Justin Huggler describes the challenges of this proposal in the Daily Telegraph:

Lost Dog, a Budweiser Commercial to Air During the Super Bowl Posted: 28 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST "Lost Dog" is another in the grand tradition of Super Bowl commercials by Budweiser, which often feature the company's iconic Clydesdale horses. In this tearjerker, a follow-up to last year's ad "Puppy Love," a yellow Labrador retriever puppy is accidentally taken a long distance from his home and farm friends, and he must find a way to make it back. Posted: 28 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST It’s true that most cheeses are named after their place of origin, so John Green goes ahead to tell us the story of the cheese’s origin as well. Even cottage cheese was once made in cottages. However, there are some in which the name is a little more complicated, like Monterrey Jack (there is a Jack involved). There’s even a cheese named after another cheese! Learn about two dozen cheese names in this week’s mental_floss List Show.
Beware Of Dogs Pretending To Be Human Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Dogs have been man's best friend ever since a poem in the New York Literary Journal coined the term back in 1821, but they're best friend in title only and tired of being treated like second class mammals. The way dogs see it if they can do what humans do then their ranking in the mammalian pecking order is guaranteed to go up. However, dogs acting like humans may sound like fun, but as these images will show it could mean the beginning of the end for both felines and mankind! It all started back in those black and white toned days of yore, when some lazy nanny decided to let the family dog take over for the afternoon Dogs soon discovered that if they could perform those menial tasks that humans hate they'd soon be offered a job Jobs would lead to social status and an income, and humans would begin to entrust them with more responsibility in society So dogs taught themselves how to drive to work every morning just like a human If there's one thing dogs know how to do it's work, and they generally start working their paws off as a pup Dogs usually like to work outdoors, but fitting in means taking whatever job comes your way Although some dogs retain their mighty lofty dreams despite their lowly social status Those with more realistic goals applied for Canine College Funds and got a good education Where they learned that in order to better fit in they would have to look like humans in both dress and attitude Some donned a more fashionable look than others Most dogs tried to make sure the outfit they wore matched the job they'd been assigned But those who started dressing for comfort discovered that working hard isn't all it's cracked up to be, and nothing beats lounging comfortably on the couch Those who didn't turn into lazy lumps kept working hard for the money, doing everything from cooking To laying concrete like canine construction bosses And they discovered that working like a human is really hard work, and really tiring! When the weekend rolled around those hard working canines kept up the ruse by dressing for leisure time activities And having fun in the sun like their humans do Most dogs enjoyed the clothing lines that went along with the leisure life, and didn't try to reel in their flair for fashion However, wearing clothes doesn't come naturally to canines, and when it's time to unwind most still preferred going au naturale, which kept them from fully fitting in with their human masters Canine naturalists tried to teach their bare fur ways to the younger generation, who didn't seem very happy with the whole idea of hound nudism And like the rebellious youngsters they are the new generation began using fashion to express their carefree attitudes [ If it wasn't for these rebellious pups, and the canine naturalist movement, dogs might have been able to slip right in to human society They would have walked among us virtually unnoticed And before we could say "woof" we humans would have been enslaved by our canine overlords Do yourself, and the human world, a favor and treat your dog like a dog- love them, brush them, feed them, play fetch with them and take them for walks. But whatever you do don't get lazy and let them do your work for you, or we're all doomed!
The Alien Chestburster Scene Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST It’s a scene that we will never, ever forget. The 1979 film Alien introduced the monster (later known as the Alien Queen or the xenomorph) by having it emerge from John Hurt’s chest where it was apparently incubating. We were shocked by the violent "birth," horrified by the idea of an alien growing inside his body, and also surprised by the death of a major movie star so early in the film. The new series Art of the Scene by Cinefix looks at the nuts and bolts of conceiving, designing, and pulling off the horrific scene in the days before non-stop CGI. -via Laughing Squid
Yeti Takes to the Streets of Boston in Snowstorm Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST As snowstorm Juno fell upon the streets of Boston, another entity appeared to further whiten the streets: a creature by the name of The Boston Yeti. Armed with a furry suit and a Twitter account (@BostonYeti2015), the Yeti, which until now was only the stuff of legend, is creating documented snow prints all over town. Defying curfews and braving snowdrifts, this urban snowman isn't so abominable: he even expresses on Twitter his wish for the Boston populace to stay safe.
