Newly published data from GSA shows 360 commercial LTE networks worldwide, with strong growth in LTE-A and VoLTE. Another variant of LTE is on the way as well: LTE Broadcast (LTE-B). Several carriers including Telstra and EE have already trialled LTE-B, and this week AT&T joined the club with a successful trial at its namesake stadium in Texas.
Wireless data speed records continue to be broken thanks to advancements in LTE-A and carrier aggregation. In Finland, Ukko Networks demonstrated 507 Mbps data throughput over a TDD LTE-A network with technology partner Huawei. Those fiber-like speeds aren't yet commercial, but they are 50 times faster than average US terrestrial broadband speeds!
Verizon just revealed its new connected car play at the Detroit Auto Show, Verizon Vehicle, and it has the potential to turn 200 million vehicles unconnected vehicles into smart cars for a small monthly fee. Besides creating a new service revenue stream for the carrier, it will also deliver mountains of usage and behavioral data that can be monetized.
