Across the Calatrava, David Jensen Learns How Dirty City Hall Fights by Jim Schutze

Across the Calatrava, David... The city calls its plan for street improvements in West Dallas "The Three-Hole Punch." But for David Jensen, who owns a warehouse on those streets, it's a sucker punch. more >>

Dallas Extends Marriage Benefits to LGBTQ Employees

A spouse is a spouse, regardless of genitalia, as far as Dallas' city code is concerned now. The City Council voted Wednesday morning to change its definition of spouse, clearing the way for same-sex spouses of civilian city employees to receive survivor pension benefits. more >>

Thin Line Fest Might Be Denton's Best Music Festival by Matt Wood

Thin Line Fest Might Be Den... It's still early going but already 2015 is shaping up to be a fascinating year for music festivals in North Texas. Much has changed in the past couple years, thanks in no small part to the recent hiatus of 35 Denton, which had led the way for local fests for several years. 35 Denton is set to return next month, but in its absence events like Oaktopia have continued to grow and flourish. And now there's a new dark horse in the running. more >>

Buffalo Black Made a Fan of Spike Lee Through Da Sweet Blood of Jesus

Last spring, Dallas rapper Buffalo Black was scrolling Instagram on his phone when a post caught his eye. It was from noted director Spike Lee. He needed independent artists for his next film, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, which was being financed through Kickstarter. Lee asked for artists to email him tracks and Buffalo Black, a big fan of Lee's work, eagerly did so. Within a few weeks, his life would be turned on its head. more >>

Small Brewpub Has Big, Weird Ideas about Bar Food, and They Start with Chicken Feet by Scott Reitz

Small Brewpub Has Big, Weir... This is getting weird. That was my first thought as the plate came in for a landing. It looked like a pâté rolled inside a boneless tube of chicken and sliced into thick discs. A plump ravioli was perched on top of each round, mimicking a cartoonish mushroom, and fried bits of roughage recalled dark foliage. As my eyes darted around the plate, I half expected to see a village filled with tiny blue people, but instead I saw a mossy forest-scape. My expectations pushed back from the table, threw their hands up and left. more >>

In the Quiet Hours at Proof + Pantry, Exploring the Magical World of Gimlets

Even though I can't generally afford to drop 30 bucks on a bowl of pasta at Proof + Pantry, I do find myself occasionally wandering into the restaurant in the late afternoon hours. Between lunch and dinner service, Proof + Pantry closes the kitchen but keeps the bar open for a few quiet hours until the dinner rush. more >>

The Last Five Years Soars Even as it Loses Sight of Its Source by Alan Scherstuhl

The Last Five Years Soars E... Here at last is peak Kendrick: In intimate long takes and in comic montage, she belts, hurts, swoons, and rages, always remaining appealingly human. You can tell, when Anna Kendrick scraps for her big notes, that she's not a natural, that she's working hard, that she's living a dream. All that fits her character in The Last Five Years, an actress for whom neither love nor career is working out. Simply put, she's grand, and her scenes and songs -- which constitute most of the film -- are worth treasuring. more >>

Five Reasons Why Fox's Empire Has Become a Breakout Hit

Empire most certainly wasn't built in a day, but its reputation as a breakout hit has been made in virtually no time at all. Since the series debuted six weeks ago, every episode has drawn more viewers than the one before it. Buoyed by positive reviews and especially word of mouth, its ratings trajectory is quite simply bonkers, making the Fox midseason replacement a genuine cultural phenomenon more >>

Eight Best Spas in Dallas, Because You Really Need To Relax by Amy McCarthy

Eight Best Spas in Dallas, ... In this hectic world full of traffic, student loans, and boring jobs, relaxation is an absolute must. Most of us don't budget enough time or cash to bliss out from time to time, which will probably mean that we'll all end up dead from all the stress of our fast-paced lives by the time we're 50. If you're interested in avoiding that early, overly-caffeinated death, going to the spa is an excellent way to recharge your batteries if vacation just isn't in the cards. more >>
