Forging the Next Generation of American Taxpayers By Jocelynn Smith, Sr. Managing Editor Some southern lawmakers believe it's time to tidy up American history to protect America's youth. Earlier this month, Oklahoma Representative Dan Fisher proposed an "emergency" bill that would slash funding for AP U.S. History, accusing the current coursework of not being patriotic enough and undermining "American exceptionalism." He sees the curriculum "having … a new emphasis on what is bad about America." Not only does the Advanced Placement (AP) program help gifted students get into college, win scholarships and financial aid, and earn college credit before entering college, it's also considered an intellectually rigorous course load built to push innovative, critical thought in America's youth. After the bill's proposal, an uproar flared among students, parents and teachers, resulting in Fisher announcing that he would rewrite the bill, claiming that it was "poorly worded." The fate of the bill is uncertain, but we have already seen similar movements in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Colorado. In fact, students and teachers in Colorado held protests several months ago when the school board demanded that the course should discourage "civil disorder, social strife, or disregard of the law" while promoting "patriotism" and the "benefits of free enterprise." Over the past several years, we've watched the government chip steadily away at our civil liberties and decimate any hope of privacy. Our elected officials have tallied up trillions in debt with no avenue of paying it back without snatching it from our own wallets. Now, it appears that they've set their sights on cleansing the history of the country they love so dearly in an effort to make America's next taxpayers more malleable to their whims. Do you trust our elected officials — whether local, state or national — to decide what should be taught to children? I would love to hear your thoughts, whether you think America's history is in danger of being sanitized or if the curriculum has become too dark. Please email me at sovereigndigest@gmail.com.
