Innovative Food Wrappers That Help Reduce Package Waste

Posted: 04 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

Food wrappers amount to millions of tons of additional garbage ending up in landfills each year, but the fact that they make food products far more portable and help keep them fresh means they’re not going away anytime soon.

So how do we reduce wrapper waste yet retain their usefulness? Swedish design duo Tomorrow Machine have offered a solution in the form of compostable and reusable packaging.

Tomorrow Machine's package designs come in two package waste reducing forms- a compostable container that dissolves in water and the Sustainable Expanding Bowl:

A biodegradable, cellulose wrapper fits snugly around freeze-dried food. Pour hot water into a spout, and not only will the food insta-cook, the wrapper will blossom open and morph into a bowl.

Burger - Try The Duchess Burger, It's To Die For!

Posted: 04 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST

Burger by BazNet

Bob was busy playing secret agent with Gene and Tina when a sinister sound came over the walkie talkie- the sound of tacos being fried in his basement. He told Linda to hold all his calls while he investigated the source of the sizzling, to which she replied "Stop acting like such a duchess Bobby!" They shared a laugh even though neither of them got the reference, then Bob remembered that he hadn't seen Louise since lunchtime. Was she the one frying up some hairbrained scheme involving a taco archer and a gathering of vegetarians? Only Beefsquatch knew for sure...

A TransAsia Airways ATR-72 turboprop plane has crashed into a river in Taiwan, tragically killing at least 19 people. This dashcam video shows the plane clipping a bridge after rapidly descending soon after it took off from Taipei airport.

The plane, which was less than a year old, had 58 passengers aboard, most of whom were Chinese tourists. The accident marks TransAsia's second crash with fatalities in under a year. The crash of TransAsia flight 222 last July killed 48 people.

Iceland to Build Its First Temple to the Norse Gods Since the Viking Age

Posted: 04 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST

(Photo: Reuters)

Sometime around the year 1,000 A.D., the people of Iceland converted to Christianity. The old Norse religion was eventually stamped out—although some syncretic elements endure to this day. Now the tide is shifting. A modern revival of the worship of traditional Norse gods, including Thor and Odin, has prompted some believers to begin building the first major Norse temple that Iceland has seen in a millennium. The Guardian reports on the growing movement:

“I don’t believe anyone believes in a one-eyed man who is riding about on a horse with eight feet,” said Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, high priest of Ásatrúarfélagið, an association that promotes faith in the Norse gods.

“We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”

Membership in Ásatrúarfélagið has tripled in Iceland in the last decade to 2,400 members last year, out of a total population of 330,000, data from Statistics Iceland showed.

The new temple just outside of the capital city of Reykjavik will host weddings, funerals, initiation rites, naming ceremonies, and other neo-pagan ceremonies:

Iceland’s neo-pagans still celebrate the ancient sacrificial ritual of Blot with music, reading, eating and drinking, but nowadays leave out the slaughter of animals.

Kids Reenact Oscar Nominated Movies

Posted: 04 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

As they did last year, Cinefix recast the movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar with children. Too bad these aren’t full-length features; from what I’ve heard, most of the nominees would be improved by turning them into comedies and casting 8-year-olds with beards. Then again, I haven’t seen any of those movies. -Thanks, Daniel!

Beautifully Carved Conch Shell

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST

The Philadelphia Museum of Art owns this exquisitely carved conch shell that is about 7 inches tall. It dates back to about the Eleventh Century A.D. and was probably made in or near Bangladesh. It shows the Hindu god Vishnu, who is often depicted using a conch as a war trumpet. The museum describes the scene:

Within the rondel on this shell Vishnu is represented in his martial role as protector of the universe. He flies through the sky on his mount, the bird-man Garuda, holding his weapons—the shell-trumpet, the mace, and the discus. Pierced conch shells are blown as trumpets to beckon the god during worship. This one, however, lacks a mouth opening on its spiral end and was probably used to hold and pour sacred water during religious ceremonies.

Wing Gate- The Pro Wrestler And The Wing Eating World Champion

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 09:00 PM PST

(Image Link)

It was a day that would live on in poultry infamy- the day hundreds of chickens gave up their tender wings for the sake of one epic eating contest starring a man named Pat Bertoletti and a competitive cheater named Mick Foley.

Mick is a professional wrestler so he knows the value of showmanship, but his underhanded fanny pack stuffing tactic got him ejected from the game, while Pat went on to eat an (g)utterly amazing 444 wings and win Wing Bowl 23.

It was a day that Pat won’t soon forget, a day that proved he has what it takes to eat way too much food in one sitting, and the start of a new foodie feud with last year's wing champ Molly Schuyler.

Why Do Cats Love Boxes So Much?

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 08:00 PM PST

Yasmine Surovec at Cat vs. Human has a good handle on why cats love boxes, but that’s not the full story.

You can buy your cat the nicest new cat gadget there is, but first he has to check out the box it came in. Every cat owner is familiar with the feline tendency to cuddle up in a good box -usually, the smaller, the better. What is it about boxes that cats love so much? A better question might be how many ways do cats love boxes, because there are multiple reasons. Wired goes through several of them, including this bit that I never knew:

According to a 2006 study by the National Research Council, the thermoneutral zone for a domestic cat is 86 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the range of temperatures in which cats are “comfortable” and don’t have to generate extra heat to keep warm or expend metabolic energy on cooling. That range also happens to be 20 degrees higher than ours, which explains why it’s not unusual to see your neighbor’s cat sprawled out on the hot asphalt in the middle of a summer day, soaking in the sunlight.

It also explains why many cats may enjoy curling up in tiny cardboard boxes and other strange places. Corrugated cardboard is a great insulator and confined spaces force the cat to ball up or form some other impossible object, which in turn helps it to preserve body heat.

What Is Déjà Vu? A Scientist Explains

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST

(Video Link)

I apologize if this is a repost, but I think that it’s worth seeing again. Biologist and science educator Joe Hanson presents scientific explanations for why we sometimes think that we’re doing the same thing over and over again.

One hypothesis goes like this: our brains continuously scan inputs from our senses. When the brain determines that something is familiar, it notes that familiarity. The hippocampus responds by recalling the memory attached to that sensory input. Sometimes the steps in this process may get out of order. When that happens, the brain may determine that something is familiar, but the hippocampus can’t find an associated memory. This induces déjà vu.

Mother Catches An Eyeful In A Can Of Tuna

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST

When you crack open a can of chunk light tuna you expect to see chunks of light colored tuna flesh floating in oil or water, but nobody expects to see a strange little critter staring back at you from inside the can!

A concerned mum from Arnold named Zoe Butler made a somewhat frightening discovery when she opened a can of Princes tuna chunks and found:

“a purply thing, a gut sack or intestine – then I turned it round and pushed it with a fork and saw it looking back at me.”

The little head is thought to be a juvenile crab missing its legs, but I prefer to think of it as the "prize inside" promotion of the tuna tin world- a free crab head in every can!

Dad Gets His Son's Doodles Tattooed On His Arm

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST

Most parents appreciate the artwork created by their children, no matter how bizarre or indecipherable it may look, but that appreciation usually goes no further than putting their works of art on the fridge for all to see.

Those typical displays of parental pride simply weren’t enough for proud papa Keith Anderson, so he has been getting a tattoo of his son’s doodles applied to his right arm every year for the last seven years.

Photographer Chance Faulkner sat down with father and son to shoot some intimate portraits that show how Keith's inked arm serves as a truly personal way to express his parental pride, and to capture this tender moment:

That's Keith's son applying the latest doodle tattoo to his father's arm and loving every minute of it. It looks like this endearing project may lead to a career in tattoo art for the budding artist, which is quite possibly the coolest way to become a tattoo artist ever!

Carefully Clever: Condom Advertisements

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

Source: Twitter

If you worked in advertising and were tasked with creating an ad campaign for a condom company, what would your brainstorming session look like? You could go at it from a number of angles, but like the first part of this sentence, everything you wrote would be suspect as a double entendre. Thus, a little would go a long way. A little imagery, a little creative wording... less would be more. That is, unless more was more.

Without keeping you on the edge of your seat, here is a collection of clever advertisements for condoms. Hopefully you'll be momentarily amused as you check them out. Your mileage may vary, however. As they say, give some people an inch...

Walker Stalker Con Cosplay Winners

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

Guess which one of these Walking Dead characters is actually from the show!

Only one of these guys is from the show, too.

The Walker Stalker Con was held in San Francisco over the past weekend. It’s mostly for fans of The Walking Dead, but all fans of zombies, horror, and sci-fi were welcome. You can check out the various events, attendees, and celebrity appearances at the con’s Twitter feed. What really impressed me was the winners of the cosplay performance competition. The cosplay group Reel Guise recreated the final scene of the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead. I put the pictures on the next page, as they contain massive spoilers for those who aren’t current with the series. However, those who are current will believe one is a screenshot from the show.

Harper Lee to Publish a Second Novel

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST

Image: Chip Somodevilla/Getty

In what is sure to be great news for fans of literature the world over, author Harper Lee will publish a second novel this summer, entitled Go Set a Watchman. The manuscript, which Ms. Lee wrote in the 1950s and set aside, is a continuation of her classic To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel features many of Mockingbird's characters, including protagonist Scout Finch, who is written as an adult looking back on her childhood experiences.

The intensely private author, now 88 years old, said in a statement that she wrote Go Set a Watchman first, but was asked by an editor to rewrite the story from young Scout's perspective. Lee's rewrite became To Kill a Mockingbird, her Pulitzer prizewinning story that went on to be one of the most widely read books of all time, selling 40 million copies worldwide.

Read more on this story at the New York Times. See this article for descriptions of and links to Lee's five published pieces of nonfiction, four from magazines and one written for the Alabama Heritage Festival.

Kinspiracy: The Stepford Readership of Kinfolk Magazine

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

Images: Winter_named_ Winter on Instagram

In what could easily be a storyline in an episode of Portlandia, Instagram junkie and Los Angeles blogger Summer Allen was, as she puts it, "spending too much time on Instagram" when she made an odd discovery about the readers of Portland-based "slow lifestyle" magazine Kinfolk. Allen writes,

"A pattern quickly revealed itself: covers of Kinfolk magazines, wood, American flags, lattes, etcetera.

These similarities popped up without even trying to look for them specifically. And so, a project was born. Not out of spite, but out of the redundancy of almost identical subject matter.

Four images. One Instagram account per set. A whole lotta the same sh*t.

Welcome to the Kinspiracy."

Allen started a Tumblr devoted to documenting the Kinspiracy. For awhile she worked the project anonymously, yet recently she's outed herself. As the word of Summer's Tumblr spreads, there are likely to be spoof accounts on Instagram. But as it stands, its present content would be almost concerning if it wasn't so amusing. -Via Laughing Squid

Bonnie was sick of playing games with the night guards, and he was looking for a new way to express his sultry side, so he decided to start his own magazine. The mag was created as a showcase for the sexier side of animatronics, giving the readers a rare glimpse at what lies beneath the fur and funny costumes of their favorite characters, but humans fail to see the appeal. To them Play Bonnie was just another horror rag, and seeing robotic skeletons assuming sexy poses the stuff of nightmares, but how was Bonnie to build his Play Time mansion without subscribers?

Car Smashing Bonus Stage From Street Fighter In Real Life

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

Remember smashing up cars in between smashing opponents in the classic arcade brawlers Street Fighter II and beyond?

(YouTube Link)

In real life it doesn't make sense for a fighter to risk their career by beating up on an old car and possibly breaking their hands and feet, but the premise does make for really fun to watch auto destruction videos.

(YouTube Link)

These real world tough guys don’t believe in car insurance, and their smashing videos demonstrate how hard it is to actually take a car apart with your bare hands. If they survive the bonus round they can look forward to enough bonus points medical bills to last a lifetime!

11 Packaging Designs Inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

When construction began on the most famous tower in Pisa, Italy in 1173, no one planned for it to lean over. But the soft ground yielded under the weight of the stone bell tower. It now rests at a 4⁰ angle.

The iconic monument is instantly recognizable. So marketers have made good use of the form to package and sell products, such as this lipstick container designed by Louis Nichilo in 1950 and a liqueur bottle that may get a bit too tipsy. You can find a roundup of some inventive uses of this form for product packaging at Beach Packaging Design.

35 Fun Cosplay Pictures From the 2015 Portland Wizard Con

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST

The Portland Wizard Con may not be as big as Comic Con or even their Anaheim incarnation -Wonder Con. Even so, there was tons of great cosplay at the convention -giving Zeon and myself a great excuse to take a work vacation up to the Rose City. Here's some of the best cosplay we spotted throughout the weekend.

One of the best events of the whole weekend was the children's cosplay contest. There we were treated with cuties ranging from Sally and Oogie Boogie to...

head strong Harley Quinn. The contest was great because it was sponsored by anti-bullying charity The Stewart-Beavers Institute.

Not that anyone would ever dare to bully Rocket Raccoon.

The kid's contest was packed with cuteness, so it really would have been impossible to pick a best costume.

So it wasn't all too surprising when the judges announced that everyone was a winner and could collect a prize.

I mean really, would you want to be the one to announce to tiny Rick and Daryl that they were any more or less awesome than balloon boy?

While the kid's contest wasn't packed, it really was the best part of the convention so everyone who missed it really missed out. I really hope they start adding kid's costume contests to more conventions -especially the SDCC, where there are already tons of awesome kid's cosplays every year.

The charming host of the contest, Jessica Merizan from Heroes of Cosplay, even said the event was the #1 thing she was looking forward to the entire time. Afterwards, she was super excited to post an Instagram pic with a bunch of the contestants.

Of course, the kid's costume contest wasn't the only place to see adorable little ones in costume -this little Maleficent charmed a whole hallway of people waiting in line to see the Box Trolls puppets close up.

Speaking of charming, the Dragon Theater company brought a few of their costumed characters to the convention and they probably had thousands of portraits taken of them.

That's hardly surprising when their costumes were so detailed and magnificent.

There are some budget kid's party entertainers out there, but if I wanted to impress my little ones at a party, I would sure hope to get a company that put this much effort into their costumes.

Though I'd be happy to settle for this cute little Eeyore cosplay as well.

By far my favorite costume of the convention was this amazing Falkor by cosplayer Ryan Wells. It not only took a ton of dedication to make the thing, but every time he posed for a picture he had to bend over and put his head down since it was located in Falkor's neck.

As always, the adult costume contest was also loaded with great cosplay including this steampunk Tinkerbell by Firefly Path.

I was particularly impressed with this steampunk dress version of Dory from Finding Nemo.

This sexy Alien costume is also pretty amazing.

Shockingly, this Warhammer Space Marine costume looks like it weighs over 100 pounds, but it was actually very light -though still encumbering due to its size.

Speaking of encumbering, I'd hate to encounter stairs with this Dalek costume, but it is seriously epic and looks fun to ride in.

I'd love to see this lady Tom Baker take the Dalek in a fight.

This Harry Potter group was pretty much epic and seeing them posed in such a perfect spot was just plain lucky.

I've attended a lot of conventions, but I've never seen someone pull off such an impressive Mars Attacks cosplay once again, this one was by the talented cosplayer Ryan Wells.

Similarly, I've seen a lot of Emma Frosts, but never one willing to go this bare (just like the character).

Though I was still quite impressed with this group and their many different takes on the character.

This Black Canary and Wonder Woman were also looking good.

And it's always a treat to see Star Lord and baby Groot together.

And lady Loki looked delightfully mischievous.

Poison Ivy was largely au naturale.

While these DC heroes looked bad to the bone in their leather get ups.

This mighty family could stop any foe with the epic force of Marvel and the Lord of the Rings behind them.

This guy was there promoting a local horror con and I was in awe of his makeup, which included real dried mealworms to create the look of maggots.

Speaking of real dead things, this Vikings costume was the first one I've seen to incorporate real furs and it make the outfit look that much more impressively authentic.

This Borderlands cosplay was some of the best I've ever seen, but I've never seen someone do the hair so perfectly as

As this gal who was hanging out with Marshal Lee of Adventure Time.

We also spotted Prince Gumball on the scene, but surprisingly, none of the female princess characters from the show.

Now, I've tried to include credits to the cosplayers where I could, but if you know the names of anyone featured here, let me know and I'll go ahead and add them.
