| Breaking: Regulations to Frack Public Lands Released
Urge Your Members of Congress to Put a Stop to the Destruction Dear Indiana,
Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) finalized regulations for fracking on public lands — but regulations don't protect us from the impacts of fracking. Regulated fracking still results in harm to people's health,1 accidental spills of toxic waste,2 air pollution, earthquakes,3 drinking water contamination,4 habitat destruction and even more climate change.5
The only way to protect ourselves and our land from the risks of fracking is to ban it altogether. Ask Rep. Derek Kilmer to support the bill to ban fracking on public lands.
In 2013, when the rules were first proposed, Food & Water Watch and our partners in Americans Against Fracking delivered 650,000 public comments from people like you urging the prohibition of fracking on public lands.
But instead of acting to protect the public from the inherent harms of fracking, the BLM and the federal government have decided to act in the interest of the oil and gas industry.
But we won't back down. Here at Food & Water Watch, we've been told over and over again that we would never be able to ban fracking. After all, who can stop the oil and gas industry? But after years of our persistent emails, phone calls, letters, meetings, rallies and movement building, New York banned fracking in December! To date, more than 450 communities across the country have passed measures against fracking.
Together, we will continue to grow the movement to end fracking.
While the BLM has failed to take serious action, Representatives Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) have shown real leadership by introducing legislation in the previous Congress to ban fracking on all federal lands, with plans to reintroduce this session. Email Rep. Derek Kilmer today to protect our public lands from fracking.
No amount of regulation would protect our public lands, health and drinking water from the impacts of fracking. It's up to us to stop it.
