This Conference Table Is Loopy

Posted: 15 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Michael Beitz warps reality with his surreal sculptures, such as a liquefying picnic table and a wall that literally has an ear. One of his recent works is Not Now, an enormous conference table that loops in the center. That may be occasionally inconvenient in an office environment. But there are some meetings in which it could be handy.

How Astronauts Travel These Days

Posted: 15 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PDT

NASA astronauts who live and work on the International Space Station get there and back by hitching rides with the Russians. You have to wonder what Kennedy and Khrushchev would think of that. On Thursday morning, cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Elena Serova, and NASA astronaut Barry Wilmore (commander of Expedition 42) came home to Earth in a Soyuz spacecraft, floating down with the aid of an enormous parachute, to land in Kazakhstan. This picture of the golden parachute (which is actually red and white) was captured by NASA photographer Bill Ingalls. See more pictures from the successful landing at National Geographic. Get more technical details about the return at NASA.

Alligator Gets Prosthetic Tail

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 10:00 PM PDT

(Photos: Phoenix Herpetological Society)

In 2013, Mr. Stubbs was an 11-year old, 7-foot long alligator living at the Phoenix Herpetological Society in Arizona. He had lost his tail when he was a baby, so it was very difficult for him to swim. His swimming stroke resembled a slow dog paddle, rather than the quick, graceful movements of a healthy alligator.

Mr. Stubbs's handlers wanted to give him the freedom and ease of movement that a normal alligator has. So they built a prosthetic tail and attached it to his body.

That's not a decorative mound of rubber. It's a functional tail thoughtfully engineered to move in a manner similar to a living alligator tail. A 2013 article in USA Today (warning: auto-start video) describes it:

Using cameras and a computer, Justin Georgi, an assistant professor in the department of anatomy at Midwestern University in Glendale, Ariz., studied Mr. Stubbs for weeks. Georgi studies alligator and reptile locomotion. At times he would attach reflective dots to the gator, whose jaws were secured with electrical tape before each session. The dots would form a 3-D computer model, allowing Georgi to see exactly how Mr. Stubbs got around.

Georgi used the research to devise the tail's specifications. It had to be buoyant, and weigh just seven to nine pounds. It also had to be flexible, so when Mr. Stubbs wiggled his rear stump, the tail would swing to propel him forward.

The Most Difficult Choice Of Life by AdmConnor

No matter which one of the eight types a trainer chooses one thing is for sure- a pocket monster is only as good as it's trainer!

Visual Glitches Turned into Real-Life Rugs

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Faig Ahmed, an artist from Azerbaijan, creates surreal carpets that appear to bend and distort reality. Some pop out in 3D dimensions. Others seem to be physical manifestations of digital image glitches. In an interview with Art Radar Journal, Ahmed explains how he designs and weaves them:

I work with a group. Usually there are twenty to 25 people involved in the process. This group experience gives my work vitality and I’m the spark that ignites it.

When I decide to begin a piece, I first talk to the carpet makers and then edit and correct their work alongside my own sketch. Next, my artwork is transferred onto engineering paper. After these preparations, the weaving process begins. As a rule, the process itself is not that easy, and I have to visit the workshop often and make corrections all along the way.

Each work needs a different type of research. For a carpet from the “Fluid Forms” show, for example, I was pouring paint onto the walls to see how different colours blend into each other and flow. For the Geometric series of carpets, I was cutting different shapes from paper to place over the surfaces to see what kinds of shades they create.

Neighborhood In Akron, Ohio Plagued By Public Pooper

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PDT

The Castle Homes neighborhood in Akron, Ohio is currently in the midst of a crapstorm- a serial crapper has been leaving steaming piles of hatred on parked cars and, in at least one incident, on toys left in the front yard.

The man is currently wanted for 19 different illegal dumps in Castle Homes, but Akron police believe he may be responsible for dropping over one hundred smelly deposits in the last two years.

Thanks to a time lapse camera set up by a resident whose car has repeatedly fallen victim to the serial pooper we now have a face to match the feces:

If you know this man you probably won't admit it, but for the sake of decency call the Akron Police and help them bring this crappy citizen to justice!

A Walk Above the Treetops in Cape Town

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT

This footbridge with glorious views of Cape Town, South Africa's Table Mountain is the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway. The walkway was opened to the public in May of 2014, and was constructed in commemoration of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden's 100th anniversary in 2013. Kirstenbosch, part of which lies in the area beneath the walkway, features 88 acres of a natural display dedicated to the indigenous plants and flowers of the region.

The gentle curves and slopes of the wood and steel Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway allow for stunning views of the landscape. The design of the walkway was inspired by a snake skeleton and is nicknamed "The Boomslang" (tree snake).

Happy Epic Pi Day, Everyone!

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 09:26 AM PDT

Mmm ... Pi T-Shirt over at the NeatoShop | More Pi Day T-Shirts and Math T-Shirts

Nevermind the anti-Pi Day-ers! Here comes Epic Pi Day!

Today is not only Pi Day (3/14) - to people in the world who keep the calendar in the slightly illogical* month/day/year format (USA! USA!) - but it's also Epic Pi Day (3/14/15) that comes only once in every century. Today at 9:26:53 am**, it's an even grander moment commemorating the first 10 digits of pi.

We held a Pi Day giveaway last week on Neatorama, and today we reveal the lucky winners: Neatoramanauts MarshaBB and Rahat A. won this round. If you didn't win, take heart - you'll have more chances to win at our next giveaway. It'll be exclusive to NeatoMail subscribers, so don't forget to subscribe! (Don't worry - We won't share your email address)

*Sorry the rest of the world: your logical day/month/year format means no Pi Day. There's no 31st day of April, nor is there the 14th month of the year. Hah! So take that, logic!

**Also the post time of this post. W00t!

Dennis the Dachshund Diets, Ditches the Dumpy Look

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Dennis is a dachshund from from Columbus, Ohio who was abused by his former owners in the form of being grossly overfed hamburgers and pizza. The poor dog grew to an uncomfortable and unhealthy 56 pounds. Luckily for Dennis, he was saved by a relative of his owners, a 26-year-old nursing student named Brooke Burton. Under Burton's program of diet and exercise, this former jumbo weiner dog has shrunk to a svelte 12 pounds; losing over 75 percent of his body weight. Dennis' previous large size necessitated skin-removal surgery after he shed the weight, which Burton was able to raise money for on GoFundMe.

She told 10TV News:

"I wasn't even sure what breed of dog he was supposed to be because he was so large,”

Burton took the dachshund on long walks and fed him a strict diet of dry dog food, in addition to giving him a lot of love to fight any depression or discomfort he experienced from being so heavy. Great job, Brooke!

Keep up with Dennis in his new fighting shape on his Facebook page, "Dennis' Odyssey: Health, Wellness, Awareness & Education."

Fast-acting Coach Saves Gymnast -Twice

Posted: 14 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Italian gymnast Sara Berardinelli takes to the uneven bars at L'International Gymnix competition last weekend in Montreal. Her coach Mauro di Rienzo is right there, with a trained eye and lightning-fast reflexes when she clips the bar. His catch may have saved her from breaking her neck! You can see the catch from a different angle here. Then she tried to finish her routine, but makes the same miscalculation again. And once again, di Rienzo is right there to save her from paralysis or worse. Gymnastics is scary, and he deserves a medal himself for his quick actions.

At the same time, I have to wonder if he knew she wasn’t ready for this event. In the qualifying round, she completed the routine just fine, but he was inches away while she was on the high bar in case anything went wrong. -via Uproxx
